Shell/canopy Center-high brake light wiring, where to tap?

I had my Leer 100XR installed on 11/25 (this last Friday). Found over the weekend the installers (Canopy World) tapped the canopy's center-high brake light to the trucks integrated left brake/turn light. So whenever I turn on my L turn signal, the shells brake light flashes as well. They're going to fix/rewire it on Friday, but they seem confused on where to tap it, being the new '22+ Tundra. I can't find anything online yet advising where to. Can anyone here offer any guidance?

 

My Leer Dealer advised that Toyota provides a wire for that. I am hoping mine will arrive in a couple of weeks.

If you can take off the tailgate and access the wires. You can test it with a power tester probe.

 

Can you tell me the Leer dealers name or phone #? I'd like to call them and pick their brain on this.

I'm confused by this, what center-high brake (only) light wiring is under there? Not even the 7-wire towing harness is dedicated brake lighting only.

I called them, there's no special wiring harness but confirmed:
Brake: red/white to a tan wire
Dome: red to blue/white

I looked at my wiring and confirmed it is like this, but it's a damn mess in there. You can see they tried to tap onto every wire on the plug, left one tap on and exposed copper. And the general wires for the canopy/12v plug are all loose and dangling, right next to the tailgate assist strut for the slow-lowering tailgate, so easy for a wire to catch and be pulled, or eventually wear its insulation. SMFH...

That's a mess. The guy at the place I linked, talked me into a battery operated dome light...

 

Another plug for @Puppypunter . He makes a great plug and play option. He's not very active here but can be found on Tacoma World under the same username.

I'll def be a buyer, if he develops one. I'm familiar with the shotty tap jobs some of these companies and I cringe at the future electrical issues they sometimes cause.

 

@Spamcan Sorry, they are right, I am not too active here. I replied to you just now, but came over here and am getting caught up. Looking at those pics (specifically the second one) it looks like they tapped tan and I am assuming the white/black wire? I think we can make this happen. As to the dome wire though, I am not sure of any constant 12V signals in the rear of the truck. You mentioned red to blue/white. That doesn’t look like it’s at the taillight. If you can see where there might be a connector we can intercept that blue/white wire, we might be able to do something there too. But I think the brake is definitely doable. Check my PM, and let me know if I’m right on that wiring (tan and white/black).

After they do the repair tomorrow, during which I'll give them my $.02 about leaving exposed wiring, etc., I'll get back in there and ensure things are buttoned up properly.

Yeah, that’s my guess. There are a couple of cheating options on the Tacoma, like changing the 12V on the trailer tap to be a constant then tapping it, but I’ve never really liked that option so I’ve never pursued it. The best solution I’ve found is running a wire up to the front unfortunately. There is a guy on TacomaWorld that started making boxes to house a fuse block in the rear of the truck. That way you can run a 10 gauge (or larger) up to the battery and have room to expand in the rear. He makes them specific to the Tacoma, but that just means the holes are located to match the bolts. On my truck, I did kind of the same thing, but I used a 4awg since it is feeding some funky stuff

 

Any reason not to grab juice from the cargo lamp?

 

Convenience mainly. Nothing wrong with it, it is just not as easy to get to. I know almost nothing about the Tundra, but on a 3rd Gen Tacoma you have to drop the headliner to get to it. Then run the wire through and out of the cab to the back. So it’s just easier to grab it at the taillight.
The thing that is kind of confusing to me is the fact that it looks like they tapped the taillight, but the OP stated that the light blinks with his turn signal, so it sounds like they tapped the trailer lights. I am ordering parts and @Spamcan has graciously offered to be a Guinea pig…. err.. test subject for this. I am going to comb through the wiring diagrams linked above as well (thanks to @1lowlife for that!) and see if I can’t determine what exactly each wire does. Looking at the picture, there are 5 wires, which usually are turn/brake/reverse/park/ground, so on paper this seems pretty straight forward. But, we shall see

Well, they repaired it, cleaned up, and now there’s nothing tied to the taillight at all. I have 3 circuits to the shell.

1. 12v constant for dome and 12v socket (both on same input from batt)
2. Brake light
3. Passenger lock for rear locking hatch (unlocking the passenger doors unlocks the shells hatch)

12v constant is run to the battery
Lock to somewhere
The brake is now tapped off the cab center-high light, on a blue wire (or maybe blue-white, he couldn’t recall) under the rear right seat. Mine is a CrewMax, I would think a DC to be the same or similar enough seat cover configuration.

Once I figure out how to remove the under seat panels I’ll get more pics.

Were you ever able to access the under rear seat area? I am having a truck cap installed in a few weeks. And the installer wanted to tap into the rear lights as your did. Not wanting to go that route some a few photo's I could pass along to the installer might be helpful.

Thank you kindly John I will look into this option. Did you use this to install your cap?? If so where do you intercept the third brake light connector? The merchant website doesn't have any information or instructions

 

He is super helpful if you reach out to merchant.
I believe it simply plugs into dash connector, and allows factory plug to plug into it and then runs back to topper.

I simply gave it to my installer and he did not ask any Q's and brake light works great (both cab and topper 3rd brake light)

The camera relocate is a must as well if you have a rear view camera package

 

Thanks for the reply John, I greatly appreciate i! Still waiting on a reply to a couple of e-mails asking for additional information as to where that factory third light plug is located. Looks like the solution I was hoping for and less than 1/2 the price of the Leer plug and play harness that you can't seem to find in stock

It plugs into the third brake light actually, Its most useful if you're already moving the cameras for a topper install and while you're in there may as-well tap the brake light wires too.

 

Anyone have a tap (pigtail) for the 3rd gen tundra dome light and turn signal light? I REALLY don't want to splice...!
