How much are your oil changes?

Just trying to gauge how much others are paying vs what I am paying.

The only reason I don’t do the oil changes myself is because we have very cold weather and I don’t really have space to do it under a roof with a heater otherwise I would do it myself.

 

For example they are charging me a little over $100.

 

Me, my local dealership actually doesn't overcharge much for oil changes, I think filter and oil and labor all wrap up under $80 after taxes (haven't had to have them do one for me yet though, just trying to remember what I read at the time.)

That being said, don't go to the cheapest place you can find, so many quick-change places do not staff competent persons, much less any kind of mechanics. I flinch every time I hear a Subaru has had its CVT transmission fluid drained and double the oil dumped in it, resulting in catastrophic, well, everything.

 

Do those prices include synthetic oil or conventional? Dealerships also staff incompetent people and generally the lowest paid ones are stuck doing the oil changes.

 

$79.95 for full synthetic oil change - this doesn't include tax, or the 10% discount the dealership gives to everyone in my town essentially. Just looked it up on their site.

 

DIY, under $40 or so. I feel like due to how much oil goes into these things that it’s a really quick and easy way to save money. Most places in my area charge extra over 5qt.

 

I think its about 100 if you go to the dealership. I believe the Kwik Kar by my house charges 80 for the truck.

 

$105 for Amsoil oil and filter at home for reference. I'd buy a jump suit to stay warm before having a place do mine, but to each their own.

 

I've been using cheap "hazmat suits" recently for work under the house, and they are pretty warming, since they don't breathe at all. Plus it could keep oil off of you.

That said, it won't help with cold stiff fingers.

I have a jumpsuit from CalRanch that was like $80 and is insanely warm and big enough for lots of layers under it. If it's above 0F it keeps me plenty warm, and an oil change at least is just a few minutes. I know what you mean about cold fingers though, and can be hard to be motivated to roll around on the ground.

 

My private shop charges $110 for full synthetic and filter.
This price also includes a tire rotation, balance check/rebalance of the two tires going up front and a top off of the fluids.

I go every 65-7500 miles.

 

Looks like it ended up being $98 for synthetic. I guess is not too bad considering the prices posted here.

 

Last time I bought Amsoil SS it was $13.99 per quart, so $125 plus whatever Toyota charges for a filter.

 

Locations would be interesting to know.

My trusted mechanic charges $110 out the door for full synthetic.

Does wheel rotation, check fluids and filters, checked my brakes last time.

When I say trusted, they have serviced my cars since 2001. Sequoia to 190k miles. Highlander to 95k miles. Audi Q7 to 55k miles. Lexus GX470 to 80k miles. 2007 Honda Pilot with 190k miles that my daughter got from her grandparents. Several work bought Explorers.

They bring up issues in the proper priority and don’t push us to do shit we shouldn’t do. Trusted.

Is it always cold? If not, then just change your oil prior to the winter months. $40 DIY full syn oil changes are better than $80- $100.

Oil change is the easiest thing but also the quickest thing someone can F up. Not worth the risk

 

$80. Jim Norton Toyota, Tulsa, OK. I know you can buy the materials and accomplish it for less out of pocket, but I look at my time. I bill at $225/hr at work. By the time I take the skid plate off, change the oil, and put it back together it has to take at least 45 minutes or an hour. I'm good paying $80 and getting a "free" tire rotation to go with it. I do all of my other maintenance work, belts, brakes, air filters, etc. It's been best for me to use other vendors for the fluid services b/c you don't have to handle the used fluids and dispose/recycle them properly.

a little more, I buy 15qts at time, Tundra / Tacoma, same oil different filters. Same engine filter, but different cabin filters

 

About $100 for synthetic.

Time is money argument only comes into play if the travel and time onsite is less than the time it takes to change the oil yourself though. At least for me, the 20 minutes it takes to drive to the nearest mechanic makes it more cost effective to change the oil myself regardless what my time is worth.

 

Dealer charges me 100 for full synthetic. In between at 5000 I do a drain and refill myself minus the oil filter since the filter is good for 10k miles.

 

Yes, but I can work while I’m waiting the hour for my truck to make it out of the lube bay. I’m six miles away from the dealer.

I do my own every 5,000 miles and it costs about $40-$50 with synthetic and Toyota filter. I also rotate & visually inspect the tires, inspect the brakes and grease the driveshaft. I don't save much money but it doesn't really cost me much time and it gives me an opportunity to look around but...I really hate removing the under engine splash shield. If I was having it done, I would have the Dealer or an independent do it - not too much more money and have never trusted the Jiffy Lube type places.
