I watched a bunch of videos on the scissor gear and I think I know the answer but are the timing marks on the gear part that rotates or the stationary can gear part?

I assume they are on the stationary gear part.

Ok guys, here is the update.

I pulled it all apart today. I redid the timing and scissor gear on the drivers side. Then I redid the scissor gear on the passenger side, the timing looked perfect, but I double checked when I reinstalled it.

I got it all back together about 30 minutes ago, topped it off with coolant, hooked up the logger and tried to start it... nothing. It cranked but didn't start. I was obviously perplexed. About that time my daughter came into the garage and told me that there was some kind of fluid shooting out of the front of my truck. I jumped out to investigate, only to find, I forgot to hook up the fuel feed line and return line. :frusty:

So I hooked those lines back up, got the logger and tried again.

It fired right up and sounded amazing. No misfires, smooth as a baby's butt. I even reinstalled the 12 hole injectors and MSD coilpacks because I knew the timing was going to be the issue, and it was.

The only small issue that is left is that I have slightly leaking injector. I think I pinched the O ring when I installed it. No big deal, comparatively, that will be a simple fix.

So, I guess we are at the end of this journey, to all the guys who stuck it out with me, thank you, I couldn't have done it without you.

I'm just glad I don't have to set it on fire now. I can't wait to drive it and hear the long tube headers now that I am running on all 8 cylinders.

I'm glad you didn't ignite yourself like Jay Leno, with the fuel spewing about (I'm happy to hear Mr. Leno is doing good now too). Congratulations on the resolution. You take tenaciousness to another level. You've impressed us all.

You have way more patience than me. I would've given up so long ago. Glad it seems solved and you get to bolt up all that stuff.

Now time to get over to the 1st Gen Marketplace forum and sell off your extras to try and dig out of the hole

It’s totally cool. No offense taken. Believe me, during this process I’ve had plenty of colorful words rattling around in my head.
Nope, I don’t do anything outside of church. I also do IT and Media for the church. I wear many hats.

I thought you had rechecked all your timing stuff. That was literally the first response to your post.

Regardless I’m glad it’s working now!

When people say "checked timing" I think most of us are thinking about timing marks on front of block, not necessarily the cams.

But now you mention it, I remember the timing stuff being a bit whack-a-mole early on too. Huh.

Yes, I did check the front but didn’t check the cams. I marked them with a paint when I took them out but I assume the scissor gear already sprung and rotated the cam before I marked it.

anyways, I will always use the service bolt from now on, but I hope to never have to do it again.

One thing I noticed, when I installed the driver side cams with the double dots and hook everything back up I rotated the cam, so the timing mark was at the top, and the single dots on the back of the cam gears actually matched up. I don’t know why I had to match up the double dots when the single dots were the right ones to match for the correct belt timing.
