What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I got it for $350, which seemed pretty reasonable. Spent the morning trimming it down and fixing it up. It does fit and most of the damage ends up being hidden once it is installed. I may get some epoxy or JB weld and mend some of the areas where there are cracks in the ammo cans.

I will pull it out and clean it all eventually but it was raining really hard this morning so I just wanted to get it installed.

It required quite a bit of trimming and the fit isn't perfect, but I am happy with how it came out and now I have a nice place to sleep on and store stuff.

Oscillating tool is my best friend.

Installed my USB camping lights too while I was at it.

 

I just finished and took it for a ride. Definitely stiffened it up quite a bit but it’s not unbearable either. On a normal road it’s smooth. Mostly on a back road you can feel it more. I personally like the stiffer ride though. I forgot to measure a lift before and after but I would say a easy 2” lift

 

I *think* I have just enough room for a cutting board on my tailgate. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Spent the afternoon cleaning the dirty decked system with simple green. Drying in the garage overnight. I'll get everything installed tomorrow morning hopefully.

 

I liked the idea of a cutting board, but unless your that dick Gordon Ramses, do you really need a cutting board that large?
Maybe source some hdpe or even go to bed bath and beyond(the coupons never expire, ever) and look for an alternative.

Vinyl wrapped the bumper chrome piece, added Toyota Heritage badge, and vinyl wrapped 1 of the mirrors, need to do the other side tomorrow

Watched a video from a pretty cool mechanic that works on Toyotas and he listed them as one of his unnecessary mods. Said the same thing, they affect ground clearance and that LCA are so beefy they dont really need a skid.

Where'd you end up going?

 

Went out to Carrizo Plain then towards the coast. Finally got to explore some of the roads that overlook the coast and found a pretty amazing spot with the best view ever. There was an even better spot that gives you like 270 degree views all around but it was definitely harder to get to. Didnt wanna risk it by myself, and I already dont like heights, haha. Pretty great time though, just me and the pup. The coastal spot was near the town of Gorda. Oh, and hit 100,000 miles on the truck!

Yea driving through Carrizo Plain will do that, haha. I got dust to clean all in the camper too

 

Montana Mountain, in the heart of the Arizona superstition mountain range.

 

LOVE that stretch of PCH. From Pismo all the way up to Monterey is just beautiful. It's cool too that it's not caked with stacked condo's, pretty rural fort the most part with small villages here and there. I drove it for my first time in February and was really surprised how many campsites and state parks there are along the way also. FYI, if you park off the side of the highway, and sleep in your truck, you will wake up with a $55 citation on your windshield. So I've heard.... Funny thing is, it was totally worth it, just to wake up to that view...

 

@RUSTYNUTS yea they definitely have the beachside camping pretty shut down, with signs everywhere saying "No overnight camping or parking in vehicles". Also they have a lot of "No Dog" signs but I know a couple spots near san Simeon that allow dogs on the beach. Looks like you found a great camping spot too!

 

The appeal of the solos to me is the caster adjustment they make at the ball joint. My biggest fight with my truck is the caster. I had to sacrifice running more camber than I’d like to keep the caster where I need it

 

@RUSTYNUTS yea $55 citation isnt too bad considering the campground in san simeon is $35. You had a spot all to yourself for 20 bucks more haha

 

Well, it was literally a highway turnout and I just stopped to sleep. All the campgrounds I tried were closed due to the fires. But yeah, that's the only ticket I've ever happily paid and felt was fair. The ticketing ranger was also kind enough not to wake me, which I thought was cool

BTW, I always cringe a little whenever I see a dog tied to a bumper after watching that National Lampoon movie.

 

He looks like a good road dog. Not too big. He reminds me of Baxter from Anchor Man.

 

Oh man, that crosses my mind everytime I do it haha.

Hes a great camping dog, but road dog hes terrible. He is so anxious whenever we drive. Around town hes fine, but once we hit the freeway he doesnt settle down. Tried CBD, calming treats, security vest, but nothing has really worked so we just deal with it. Once we get to camp hes a happy camper. But yea, his size does make for a convenient road/camping dog!

 

That swing-out stove platform is pure money !

 

Thanks man, this was the first trip I really got to use it since building it and i couldnt agree more. It came in so handy and I cooked on it every night. I really like how it helps keep my tailgate from getting too cluttered while cooking so I can still climb in and out of the shell without having to move a bunch of stuff.

Nice that it's off to the side and heat is away from the shell . . . and smoke too in case you burn anything cooking ! LOl.
