Climate Control Fans / Airflow Weak?

Just wondering if it's me or others, but I feel like the max-fan setting on the climate control is barely pushing any air out. I've tried 100% face vents with passenger and rear vents shut, and it's still pretty weak. It also whistles (vents all open or closed).

I've never had a vehicle where I needed to use the max fan speed before, usually I'm turning them down. (My Wrangler and old Ridgeline blow at least 2x as much air it feels like).

UPDATE: I've created a video to show what I think is weird. The airflow is actually great in "Auto" mode with fan speed high on the face vents. It's when you select a specific vent mode that the flow is reduced by at least 50%... even to the same vents that auto mode was using.

It also appears that manual mode is not actually manual and changes fan speeds based on other criteria."Face only" mode actually seems broken, like the valves behind the dash are moved to a position that is not actually maximizing airflow to the face vents (compared auto mode on AC). It sounds like air is just swirling around behind the dash and not much is coming out.

Changing the truck between "eco" and normal mode didn't make a difference in my testing.

Mine only whistles when a vent is closed. Make sure all your vents are open all the way and should take away the whistle sound.

As for the output of the ac itself, mine was lackluster as well at first. However, if I turn the temp down to low, not at 60, and turn the fan to max, recirculate inside air, and click the ac on button then it really screams out some air and gets much colder.

Cabin air filter may be too thick. I replaced my 2nd gen with one from Amazon and it severely restricted air flow. I went back to oem and it resolved the problem. I’m not sure about the 2022, but you may look into your cabin air filter.

    Eco mode will do this.

OK I've done more investigating, I updated the original post with a video. It's not related to eco mode. There is specifically a huge difference in airflow between auto mode and manual modes.

Any update on your issue? I just picked up my SR5 a few weeks ago and it is doing the same thing.

Just updating everyone - I have no fix yet. However, now that it's cold outside in Maine, this has become extremely frustrating and is driving me to find a solution. It takes FOREVER for the cabin to heat up and it's only November.

My old Honda Ridgeline used to blow copious hot air after only 1/4 of a mile and had much more airflow. My Jeep Wrangler on full fan speed must be 10x more airflow than the Tundra.

I'm sitting in the tundra on face-only vent mode, fans and temp at MAX and holding my hands right in front of the vents and it's not much airflow and not very warm despite being so loud. My Wrangler is capable of feeling too hot and feeling like its burning my hands in this manner, in comparison.

This morning the temperature outside was 30 degrees, I remote started the truck for 10 minutes and had to drive 3 miles (around-town ~30 mph driving) before the cabin was a comfortable temp. Insanely slow to warm.

I'm going to visit the dealer to try and compare my truck to another on the lot. This can't be normal.

I will absolutely seek lemon law buyback if this can't be fixed. It's a deal breaker in cold climates to not have adequate heat.

I have experienced this same issue and it is beyond frustrating. I live where we are already in the single digits in the morning and when I crank my system to max it couldn’t even flow a mouses kite with the amount of flow there is. When I turn it up all it does is make it so I can’t hear anything. To compare I sat in an extremely base model Nissan Sentra that I rented on an a work trip and had maybe 2-3x airflow on the second lowest setting. It was a ridiculously good system in a car a third the price. Definitely wanna consider taking it into the dealership.

In think the lemon law route could actually be valid due to cold weather high humidity defrost problems. I have found that the windshield defrost mode takes an extremely long time to eliminate fog, and has trouble keeping up which presents a safety issue. This is especially problematic for freezing rain / icy conditions where heat against the windshield is critical to maintain visibility.

This has been an issue for me on cold wet days already. When other vehicles I've had can clear the windshield in ~20 - 30 seconds, the Tundra is taking multiple minutes and is still foggy very at the periphery. It barely does anything to the side windows at all which I have been just rolling down when I get to intersections since they take several minutes to defog.

Based on your profile photo we have pretty similar trucks. Do you have the dual climate zone HVAC or single. I started messing with it today, switching through all the modes and fan speeds. I pulled the cabin air filter to see if there was something blocking the flow and after a few weeks my filter was pretty dirty already but didn't notice anything obvious. I did notice though that if I turned off the "sync" function and just used the single zone it felt like more air was coming out of the vents.

    Too many, but not enough....
I think most modern vehicles have piss poor ac compared to 20 years ago. While my 21 isn't bad, I do have tint all around.

My old ranger would blow ice cubes, I don't think I ever passed the 2nd setting.

I haven't had a problem with the heating system so far, but just played around and found that when set at Lo it moves a much larger volume of air through the face vents than at any other temperature. I'm not sure what is happening, but if you switch back and forth between 60 and Lo, there is a distinct difference.

It’s winter here now and my heat is ripping hot, just set the temp and have the fan blow at a higher speed it’s working great paired with heated seats and wheel. I don’t think auto can keep up with the cold, here’s a pic.

Same result here. Lo seems to blow pretty well, Hi doesn’t blow well at all, regardless of Auto, manual fan speed, manually selecting vent location, etc. I’m a bit concerned about it being able to defrost my windshield. Haven’t had to deal with it much yet, but it’s starting to get cold here. Into the 20’s next week, I’ll see how it does.

It really seems like the face vents are most affected (which I don't really care about because I don't like hot air blowing on my face anyway). I haven't had any problems, defrosting the windshield.

I have issues to the foot vents as well. It’s low flow anywhere in the truck and my defrost is super slow. I think this doesn’t influence every truck the same

Does it change anything if you switch between outside air, and recirculated air?

Not that I’ve experienced. It sounds to me like there should be a whole heck of a lot more air as if something is disconnected and it’s not getting to the vents

I had my AC system recharged by the dealer, it was not blowing super cold this summer and turns out it was not properly filled. This made a huge difference and my heat is HOT. Have you gone into settings and turned the ac auto system to off?

Mine works pretty well on AC. It blows strong, but not as cold as I’d like. The issue with the heat is that there is 1/4 as much air flow as with AC. It blows hot, it just doesn’t blow with any volume whatsoever. It’s like when you switch to heat, the blend door closes off everything.

Have been dealing with 20F mornings here and can confirm that the auto mode fan speed stinks, way too weak, but if I manually override it blows nicely after the engine heats up

That's the old "Max AC" so that's the diff there, but the main issue is the new tundras do not have the AC systems that all other toyotas have by any stretch of the imagination.

I only have single zone in my SR5 and the only way it works decent is on LO with high fan speed otherwise it's piss poor compared to all the other toyotas I've had in the past, still researching!

We just bought a new 2022 Tundra and are having the same issue. Following this thread for updates in case anyone figured out the weak airflow problem...it's frigid where we live now and while we can tell there is warmth behind the dash, there is barely any airflow despite the noise and whistling. Has anyone had luck increasing airflow in heat mode?

First time I saw this thread (actually came here to see if others are experiencing this), but I dropped mine off at the dealer this morning for this very issue, report back later.
