Hey all, in April my wife and I are taking our daughter to look at colleges in California, USC, UCLA and Pepperdine ( any experiences with these colleges please chime in , I know zero about California!), I was thinking about driving from NY to Chicago and doing the Route 66 experience , I have questions ,though . Is it worth it ? I think it’s a bucket list item but am I wrong ? Is a week enough time ? Anything I should see? I appreciate all the insight and thanks in advance !

Drove 66 from Toronto to home in early May of this year with my daughter. Take your available time plan your overnight stops in advance based on the miles you need to put down. 460BFA94-0963-46B3-A8EB-AE21F59CCF44.jpg Then grab any one of the million available guide books and figure out stops for each day. You will spend some considerable time on I-40 to make time, but the stops will be worth it.

Although I’ve only traveled the old Route 66 in Illinois and Missouri, here are a few photos to look at, maybe someday I’ll drive the whole way all the way to the west coast

Something has happened to Pops, it's not like prepandemic any longer. Damn shame really. The Butcher stand Bbq in Wellston might be about the best Oklahoma has to offer. The burnt ends melt like mints, pretty damn tasty. Get there early and prepare to wait in line!:hungry:

I drive it every day and get to look at Uranus.

(Heh. But seriously...I literally drive past this every single day on my way to work.)

Molly's Landing in Catoosa, Oklahoma comes to mind as somewhere sort of unique.

Just did a couple hundred miles along old 66 with the wife and baby yesterday.

Some beautiful scenery and kitschy shops/abandoned photo opportunities.

This was on a section of I-40 thru Navajo Nation/AZ

In that video, Mav only saw a fraction of what Route 66 has to offer. He was just trying to get home. My brother did a 66 trip a few years ago. Took him almost two weeks.

Actually camping out on Route 66 in Amboy, CA right now. Most of it is shut down right now due to failing collapsing bridges. Not much to see here besides power poles

It depends IMO on how much time you have to explore. There are some cool and fun things to do and see and experience but if you are in a hurry just take the interstate. I like to take the roadl ess traveled personally.

all 3 are great colleges but in L.A. it's all about UCLA vs USC so pick your side :)
    What's her major ? @Red8654
route 66 ends in Santa Monica which is not too far from UCLA :)

My co-worker is the artist that painted that building. His name is Jerrel Singer. https://www.theheartbox.space/jerrel-singer

You are correct that the picture is on the Navajo Nation/AZ, but it is not on I-40/Route 66, it's actually on Hwy 89 north of Flagstaff:

I've driving many parts of it and there's a lot of cool history of the towns along the route. It would be nice to make a trip of driving it.

Add the Route 66 Midpoint and the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, TX to your list of stops. Best cinnamon rolls and coffee of the whole trip.
