Time for new Lower Control Arms

These items should be reusable.

The item qty. 4 is the Cam/ Eccentric Nut



Check to see if they have a restocking fee, if not you can return them if you don’t need them.

 

Yup.

 

If the bolt unscrews from the CAM nut, it should be reusable. Even if it sticks in the sleeve, you can punch it out from the other end inside the sleeve. If you want all the hardware to look pretty and new with the exception of the bolt head, get both the CAM sleeve and nut.

 

Thank you. I haven't placed the order yet so I'll just remove those from my cart tomorrow before ordering.

 

The Cam sleeves slip inside the cam plate. Both are eccentric.

I hope it makes sense. The front sleeves, and back sleeves are different lengths.

 

I think I got it now. Cam Nut and cam plate are the same thing and I don't need to buy new ones. These are what I'll mark with a sharpie before removing so I can get the alignment close when putting back together. Thanks fellas.

 

Yes, you've got it!

The sleeve, that I have here goes into the cam plate/nut where the arrow is. This is where I worry that the sleeve, and nut are rusted together as there is very little slop there. It's been my observation that liquids tend to go into small crevices like that, and stay there.

If theyre rusted together youll have to cut them out along with your old arm. Unless you have a jack hammer.

 

Just another visual to add in case it helps @FirstGenVol or anyone else. Mine came apart as you can see but the metal sleeve was seized into the bushing that got pitched.

 

I wonder if I could test this before disassembly.

 

I'd just spray the shit outta these areas at any angle ya can get beforehand. Maybe pry to make space to insert the straw in between parts a little better...

 

Removing those parts got be below $500 but I'm wondering why Toyota describes both sets of Cam Sleeves as "front". Still researching before I finish the purchase.

 

Is there any other hardware I should replace?

 

One thing that could be done is to partially loosen the bolt giving about 1/8” inch gap between it and the CAM plate on the front of the sleeve and then whacking the bolt head to push the nut/plate off the sleeve in order to break the rust bond.

I originally thought there was something on the nut/plate to push it though from the other side other than the threads but I guess I was wrong.

I bet that just means they're for the front of the vehicle since Toyota also sells vehicles with four wheel alignments

 

God damn it. I didn't even think about using the bolt to push the plate off. Genius!

 

This Eccentric is supposed to be attached to the sleeve. It’s pressed on.

 

yup, apparently it detached when removing. It's still in the bushing in a landfill rusting more. The pic was for visual reference for FirstGenVol more for the cam nut than anything.

 

You don’t recycle metal where you live?

 

I think it's because they either pop out or you end up killing yourself getting them out, there's no middle option.

Do you have a place to leave the truck on jack stand for a week? If so, I'd pull the alignment cams and bolts to see what kind of shape they are in and if you need new ones, then try to use a bottle jack and push out a bushing. If it comes out awesome, if not then you can order new ones.

 

Mine came apart like this also when I did the front end on the V6. Here's some pictures of the old shite. Also, some of my cam sleeves had literally rusted through, and some of the sleeve got stuck in the plate. You'll see what I'm talking about.

I actually greased the "teeth" on all my cam sleeves in the hope of preventing rust. I don't know if it works. Guess I'll find out in 20 years...

 

This thing looks horrible. Looks like someone drug it through gravel and dropped it. It already has surface rust over a lot of it. The other arm doesn't look as bad but not great either.












Aside from the damage, the quality on these are not what you usually see from Toyota. The welds are sloppy and they look like shit overall. They also have the equivalent of metal acne all over which I assume is normal in the manufacturing process but rather than shave them off, they just painted over them.

I wonder who manufactures these for Toyota.

 

Doing some test fitting with some spare bolts I have. I know that lower shock bolt can be a pain to begin with so I want to make sure it's going to line up when I get to install.

 

Yup, I'd say that got bent in transit.

 

I believe I have it straight now. Leaning towards just keeping these and doing minor paint touch up before installing. Then I'll be done with Serra.

 

I would still ride Eric's ass about it. Or have him print out a mailing label, maybe he'll get charged for it. I know this is a straight-up dick move, but what he did was worse.

 

Damn. Looks like they gave you the leftover arms that were sitting in the corner under the shelves of parts they stock.

 

I was thinking that too. The fact that they already have rust on them is odd. And again, they look like shit in general. I could almost believe they are Moog arms with Toyota stickers slapped on.

 

Dude that's sucks! For what they cost I expect them to be in better shape. Was the box f*cked too? Felt like thing when UPS delivered my spindles..

 

No I actually don't think it was UPS's fault. The box looked fine aside from the holes where the arm poked through. With items this heavy they needed better protection inside.
