sounds like something the United Kingdom, the Austrian Empire, Kingdom of Prussia, Kingdom of Spain, Kingdom of Naples, Kingdom of Sicily, Kingdom of Sardinia, Dutch Republic, Russian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Kingdom of Portugal and the Kingdom of Sweden would say.

Let's talk belt carry. What's your preference for a 4"+ fixed blade knife out in the bush? Do you like it vertical on the side of your belt, scout carry horizontally behind, horizontal on the side?

I'm thinking of trying the scout carry next season as I prefer to have my bear spray on my belt where a knife would normally ride. Putting the the knife on my other side feels awkward as I'd be drawing with my non-dominant hand. Scout carry seems like a good solution.

I think your probable deployment considerations would be the biggest factor. I don't prefer to carry in the rear because that generally will limit the ability to deploy to only your right or left hand, unless you're a freakin contortionist or weigh 125lbs. Normally, I'll carry horizontally (almost in an appendix position) w/a slight upward cant... This way the knife and be accessed and deployed w/either hand. If it's on the right side, then a right hand deployment would be a reverse grip edge out, and the left hand deployment would be a traditional forward grip. If it's positioned on the left side then vice versa... Another benefit to this type of carry position from a self defense perspective is that the blade is never behind you; if you end up on your back you can still deploy it; and weapon retention is much easier.

To me, the deciding factor on which side to position the sheath on comes down to the other tools being carried and whether or not the blade is "primary" for the day.

In other words, if we are purely talking self defense, then my pistol would be right side (since I'm right handed), and the blade would be on the left side. So, if I'm drawing the blade to use as a utility device, then it's being drawn in a traditional forward grip w/my dominant hand.

However, let's say that you're in bear country and your "primary" tool is bear spray, and you're only other tool is a knife; then I'd carry that on the side that I prefer to draw and spray from, and the blade would be opposite (although still accessible and deployable w/both hands). Now, let's add a pistol to the mix, but w/the same parameters.... I'd probably set up a chest rig of some sorts for the bear spray; pistol would still be set up on the right; and blade on left side.

Lastly, if you carry your pistol on your hip and not appendix, then you could still carry the blade in a horizontal appendix position on the same side as the pistol :santa2:

So many tools; so many carry options; so little time!!!!!!

    Good points.

Here in the Canuckistan, pistols are verboten to carry in the woods (and recently to buy/sell...) so unfortunately I don't have that consideration to worry about. I usually have a rifle or shotgun with me but there are times when it's not practical (flyfishing, bowhunting, some hiking trips etc) which means bear spray is my primary defence.

The knife would be a last ditch defensive weapon so it's mainly a tool. Rapid deployment isn't really high on my priority list but I do feel I can draw faster from a scout position with my right hand than with my left hand if the knife is on my hip.

I might try carrying horizontally towards the front of my left hip which would allow a cross draw from the right or a reverse grip draw with the left hand.

The knife I'm working with is a ESEE 4 in a kydex sheath.

I'm a lefty that has had to learn to do many things right handed. (I feel like most lefties are ambidextrous out of necessity) personally I have bear spray on my right. If I've got a knife on my belt it's on the left side with a right handed sheath, backwards for a lefty. Feels natural to me. Other wise I carry my RT knives in my pack as I've lost a few knives going through thick stuff before. Pistol is on my bino chest pack for easy access and quick aiming height. I can grab the bear spray and pistol almost simultaneously.
