Toyota and their cheap interiors UPDATE IN FIRST POST.

I recently spoke with a GM engineer who worked on the programming for the 8 and 10 speeds and straight up said the 8 speed sucks. Like physically the transmission sucks. He said their programming was great but they could only do so much with what they were given.

He said the 10 speed is great.

I dont think the 6.2L does better but its not as far off as they make it seem. If you look at fuelly.com the two are within .5 mpg of each other, not the 2 mpg that the EPA numbers suggest.

What sucks about the 6.2L is the cost. Its like a $4000 upgrade over the 5.3L even though they are basically the same engine. Its even more expensive than the Duramax, which is probably the most technologically advanced engine in any half ton at the moment.

Seriously, the 3.0 Duramax is one of the best half ton drivetrains on the market right now. I am on the FB group and overall it seems solid except for a few quirks it had at the beginning with the crank no start issue.

We visited my wifes family in VA the other week and one of them had a 2021 D-max. He commuted something like 110 miles a day and said his lifetime average on the truck was 27 mpg i think. It was high 20's.

 

what sucks more than all of that is the seats, ugh did they suck when I tested the 6.2 AT4 refresh. I ended my test drive they were so bad.

not sure the lifter problem is behind them either, so I bailed and went back to the drawing board.

 

I understand the frustration about the plastic side seat panel cracking. I understand that it shouldn’t happen but unfortunately they crack. People attribute it due to cheap plastic material. Well my Mercedes Benz G wagon has had a similar problem. Needless to say the G Wagon cost several times more than any Tundra. When mine cracked I could only blame myself for dragging my fat ass across the seat.

 

I think the issue is that while Mercedes has the reputation of being an overpriced piece of crap, Toyota does not have this reputation. This is where the disappointment comes into play.

I just came from a 2020 silverado RST with 3.0. Bought my 22 Tundra SR5 mostly because i work at a Toyota dealer now. lease was about up and could get out of my truck and pocket some money by selling it to a dealer. there are some things i really miss about my Silverado.
1. MPG both trucks have 35s and small lift. silverado still got 20-25 mpg, tundra is 12-15 mpg. but lately difference in gas vs diesel i wasnt saving alot
2. truck stayed on when remote start and opening the door. and the remote start worked every time
3. interior felt nicer
4. SIDE STEPS IN THE BUMPER!!
5. and a flat rear floor

i like the console layout on the tundra and the powertrain feels good most of the time. and i like the aftermarket support that toyota gets

I really hate to admit this......

Our 2021 Yukon AT4 with the 5.3/10-speed is phenomenal and best power train I have ever driven (non-diesel). We have 29k miles on it and has been absolutely flawless. Not a single rattle or squeak. The interior is very high quality. Does not have a lot plastic as most everything is leather, except a few pieces around radio like most.

The next time I feel the 10-speed shift will be the first. It is always in the right gear and smoothest power train I have driven. I have actually towed a good bit with it and is fantastic. Feel alone, GM hit a home run with it.

Seats are always a touchy subject and a very personal preference. We actually think they are more comfortable than my 2019 Tundra Platinum. That is very subjective......

We have averaged 18.3 in our Yukon of mixed driving/ a lot of back roads and some highway thrown in. That is 1 MPG more than our 2017 4Runner Limited, 3 more than our Tundra Platinum. If you do not mind doing 55-60 in far right lane, we can actually get up to 21-23 MPG.

Don't get me wrong, love Toyota's! But GM has done a great job with the new 10-speed and give credit where credit is do.

 

The part in bold, thats where Toyota missed the boat. I did not mind the drive train, I think for the most part they nailed it, it was everything else I did not enjoy.
The look, fit, feel and over all layout of the Silverados interior wins over the Tundras.

 

So currently I have a 22 gmc Sierra 1500 Limited with the 3.0 diesel . Mpg is amazing 25-27 mpg . Best tail gate out there and bed . Super comfortable . My hang up is the dealers . Lots of stories when things go wrong with the transmission or oil leaks . Truck is down for months . I ain’t paying that kind of money for something like that . Toyota has always treated me right so I’m going back to a tundra again

 

I hate to say it, but an LZ0 Duramax GMC might end up on my short list next year.

Just needs a larger fuel tank, but the aftermarket might have a solution.

I am reluctant to go down the diesel truck path, but I can’t ignore the mileage and logical power delivery for truck things that a diesel provides.

The new 2023+ GM interiors on the Chevrolet and GMC also look phenomenal in person. Furthermore it doesn’t hurt that a guy can actually order pretty much what one wants and GM will build it.

The short list so far if I buy a new truck:

1.) Toyota Tundra with the iForceMax.

2.) GMC Sierra 1500 with the LZ0 Duramax.

3.) Ram 1500 with the Hurricane I-6 if offered.

I have a strong bias towards inline sixers, and frankly I don’t think the 3rd Gen Tundra has a significant enough reliability advantage anymore to warrant buying a Toyota based solely on reliability. So the Tundra might face very stiff competition there in value, features, and driving experience.

 

I had considered the diesel engine. In the end I stayed with a gasser.

That Ram Hurricane still has my interest, I am looking forward to watching videos and reviews on it, I hope Ram nails it.

 

This is key. I can't imagine towing my travel trailer with a gas engine and a 24 gallon fuel tank.
