I just got my new 2023 tundra and paid for the bigger tank upon filling the tank and restarting the truck I only got 300gl to empty is this normal or should the Odometer read higher? . I'm basing this off of my dad's F150 With the 26 gallon tank he gets almost 500 miles until empty

The odometer will read lower than the actual mileage if you go based on the average mpg you’re getting. Mine says I get ~17mpg ( 2023 4x4 hybrid) so with a 32 gal tank it should be around 540mi to empty but the display will read about 440 to empty. I think the truck is still “learning” the mpg and possibly adds extra as a reserve. Only about 500 miles on mine so far.

The larger tank is 32 gal, not 38. Seems most people found a break-in period of a few tanks when their trucks were new. The truck is also calculating a reserve. It's hiding gas from you. It will say you are bone-dry with only 5 miles left, but you'll only be able to fit in 26-27 gallons. I'm not really a fan of this as it doesn't seem consistent with the amount it is reserving.

Lots of discussion on this already. It will always read low and leave 6 or 7 gallons in the tank when I reads 0 dte. As to why, it's all speculation

For what's its worth, the gas light on my 21 with a 38g tank comes on when there's approximately 6g left in the tank. There were a couple brave souls that ran it dry and pumped 38g into the tank. I'm sure the 22 and 23 tundras have a similar setup to where there's maybe 5-6 left when the light comes on.

I drove 560 miles on a tank on recent road trip, 23 mpg, and with my 32 gallon tank it only took 25 gallons to fill it up even though the fuel gauge was real close to empty. I think the highest guesstimate I've ever saw for miles till empty was 450 miles, I wouldn't worry about that as it isn't really accurate and is based on the type of driving you are doing and how you drive it.

I hate this, I was stuck in the middle of nowhere in the UP, and the truck said I was out of gas. I was 27 miles from the closest station, and sweating bullets. The truck took like 27 gallons...... WTF.

I also think the truck uses the running total MPG from all time or something. Since I tow 10,000 lbs for about 1/2 my miles, when I fill up the truck will say 310 miles to empty or something like that.

Toyota wants to keep some fuel in the tank so you don't run dry as running it low on a regular basis will shorten the life of the fuel pump. First time I did that I felt the same way. I think you are right when it comes to estimating how many miles you have left to empty. After I tow our toy hauler my estimates go from the mid 400 mile range to just a bit over 300 miles, I don't put much stock in that function because it's such a crap shoot with it
