    Blargh!

And I thought it was bad when I got my finger pinched in my WDH. Managed to convince the wife I didn't need stitches.

During Covid, when I was given my walking papers with my last employer (funny, as they hit me up this year to come back. I politely told them never again. Treated my employees and I like shit- no thanks) I had six weeks of PTO they paid me out on. I dont know what my current employer PTO cap is. Hell, when I submitted my 40 hours the other month, I never got a true vacation. I literally worked (via phone) daily on/off. I cant tell my national clients "no, sorry. Go talk to Joe Schmoe who you have no relationship with to help you).
We have sick days, and I never take those.
I do not make my managers submit PTO or sick time if they want to take their work with them where they go; at least be available. I leave it up to them to decide so they have the freedom to make their own choices. They can keep their time, or use it. All of my managers love that flexibility.

I earn 5 weeks a year (technically 4 weeks and 4 days). Max in the bank is 320 hours (8 weeks), at which point they simply cut a check for 80 hours.
Because I am salary, my PTO applies differently. I can only actually claim it in full day increments (8 hours), and that is only if I do not do anything work related that day...so not all that different than how you are treating it. If I answer a couple of emails or take a phone call while on the beach in Maui on a family vacation, then that day can't be claimed as PTO any more.

Flip side is that there are plenty of days where I'm having to jump in and do something on a Saturday or late at night to prevent disrupting the normal daytime operations. So the system has checks and balances.

I would not be disappointed in either one of those setups, the flexibility would be cool.
My work is just a classic in person position, I'm either on the job or on PTO. Down to the 1/4 hour on the time sheet.

One hilarious thing we do have is Disturbance pay. I get to put in for 1/2 hr pay for answering my boss's text, telling him I can work tonight.
