Sirius shows as the trial period started on the 12th as well. The only glimmer of hope I see is if my commitment to buy text on the 12th was used to mark the vehicle as sold. IDK, how that would work on the dealership side of things, but the only way I'll know for sure is if I get some info from the dealership.

The biggest issue; sporadic communication. I get that the guy is the GM, busy, and "won't communicate like a salesman", but this has been a bit ridiculous. Like the email he forwarded to the used guy, would it really take more than an extra 30 seconds to reply to my email with "I've forwarded this to my used car guy to see what we can do, but he won't be in until Monday" or something to that effect?

 

Nah. They pointed me in the direction of a dealer who got it quicker than any others I was looking at. They did good and aren't responsible IF, and it's too early to condemn, it was sold to somebody else.

If youre seeing a date of first use already when you search the VIN, its been sold. That only starts once we report the vehicle sold to Toyota and when we report it we have to have all the customer information input at the same time. If its dated 11/11 AND they wont return your calls or emails, they sold it to someone else...sorry to be the one to tell you that.

If he's been working with the salesman, could it be that it has been marked sold for him? I don't know how all this works, so genuinely curios. Or that someone built it to order?

Highly, highly doubtful. Marked sold in the system and Reported sold is 2 different things. We mark a sold unit in our system so that other dealers dont call us trying to dealer trade for it and things like that. We report a vehicle sold when we actually deliver it to the person buying it. When its reported sold and has a date of first use, the warranty starts on that day so there is no reason to report a car sold and not contact the person supposedly buying it, wouldnt make sense. That truck has been sold already to someone else.

 

They have my name. That's it. Pretty sure this is just my usual luck playing out.

I've sent a polite email asking if the truck was sold given on the Toyota owners page.

He just called. Apparently he's been out of town a couple of days for personal stuff. The truck hasn't arrived yet and the VIN he gave was the temporary/first VIN. He said he hasn't given me the actual VIN, and wouldn't sell it out from under anyone. The truck has yet to arrive. So, I guess I'm just paranoid.

I thought you said you searched the VIN and it showed a date of first use? Temp VIN wont show that...

 

Thats how i understand it as well. I'm just relaying what I was told.

The VIN I was originally provided is 3TYCZ5AN4PT112855 and what I was told on TW was that temp VINs have a letter in the 4th to the last spot instead of a number. I don't work in the car sales industry, so I can only go off what I'm told, but the forum says one thing and he says another. I'm just in the middle.

Basically, I'm not judging. Just trying to puzzle it out.

 

the VIN you just sent over is not a temp VIN, that is the VIN to a 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro in Solar Octane. It was sold on 11/12/2022

 

So, here's my dilemma:

The Toyota owners page and app show the VIN I was provided in email from the dealership on two occasions. There's a pre-delivery inspection at the correct dealership for the 9th (Blurred the name as I am not trying to smear or disparage) and a first use date provided.



This makes it look like there was a miscommunication and it was sold.

On the other hand, I have a call from the dealership this morning stating my truck has not arrived and that he'll get back to me with distribution info. This man's honesty has been vouched for by TWO upstanding and well respected members of the forum who I trust.

Now, any other day, patience and trust wins, and I just wait to be told it's on the lot. The complication/worry arises when I've planned/scheduled a trip based on being told the truck should have been there "in the next few days" back on the 8th. This trip includes a promised visit to family and is a 17+ hour drive one way.

What do I do?

 

@GODZILLA If the PDI has been done, its definitely landed at the dealership as that cant be done until its physically there. The VIN is 100% not a pre-production VIN either so if you were told that it is, then that is lie #1. Is the dealership 17 hours away from you....if so Id bet you anything they sold it to someone local. Did you confront the person at the dealership with all the information youre showing us here? They cannot say a vehicle hasnt gotten there yet when you have information showing that is has already been through the pre-delivery inspection. Id have to call them out on that but at the same time it seems that you need to be looking for another dealership to work with on securing a truck.

I was going to ask if it was possible they had two SO TRD Pros on the way and sold one to Adam and one to somebody else? Maybe the salesman mixed up the two VINs by mistake?

This is sincere advice... in all my years, I've never looked back and thought, 'shit, trusting my guts/instincts in this situation really screwed me'; but in contrast I know several times that I haven't trusted them, and it's come back to bite me (sometimes very hard)!

You are a sharp guy w/good instincts. Trust them! You are not overthinking, you are processing information that is available to you; and that information is telling you there are definitely some flags on the play!!! Other opportunities will present themselves.

 

Maybe? That's just it, I can't get info for crap. The phone calls have generally been him being borderline angry, and just getting in so he'll get back to me.

I'm trying to work on my temper and trying to think before speaking so I'm not being confrontational. I let him say his piece, and I wait.

 

Trying to get one before the end of the year and not marked up or bloated with accessories in the new color is just about impossible.

And, as usual, I'm an asshole. He got back to me with an updated VIN, showing it is presold in my name, and that it's still on the way with the same build date. Not delivered yet, but expected soon. Toyota doesn't give them great timelines, and there was a snafu with an accessory that delayed it he wasn't notified.

No idea how the previous VIN thing happened, but this is why I didn't want to judge or drag a name through the mud. Just was talking out my anxiety.
