How can anyone really disagree with the CR rating? They have access to far more data as far as complaint frequency than we do. And this little internet forum has a high number of complaints for the third gen so far, so the CR rating may actually be very representative of reliability (or lack thereof). My truck has proven reliable thus far, but has had minor leakage out of the moon roof, and lots of wind noise. The system settings for lock/unlock preferences and other default settings keep getting reset with out me doing anything. Lots of bugs Toyota needs to work out.

Nobody can disagree with the data. They didn't present the data - just their interpretation of the data. They have a history of biased reviews on many products. They consistently downgrade Dyson vacuum cleaners - too heavy, battery doesn't last long enough, yada, yada, yada. I love my Dyson....very reliable, have replaced parts as required over the last 15 years and it performs like new. Similar to the six Toyota's I have owned over the last 35 years.

You have the data? Can you share the data with us? Surely you have it since you know they interpreted the data for the 2022 Tundra differently than yourself, right? Not vacuum anecdotes.

Edit: I certainly don't have the data, so I'm stuck speculating as much as the next guy based on the representation of this forum and my own ownership of a 2022.

My reliability ratings & studies are always based on a sample size of 1: My own truck.

Until my truck proves me wrong, I'll consider it reliable and keep it for a long time. The moment I consider my truck "unreliable", I have no problem putting it out to pasture, trading it in, and looking for something different.

"Reliability", at least in my opinion, is very subjective and differs from person to person. This might be a hot take, but in my mind it's hard for big organizations like CR to put a global label of "Reliable" or "Unreliable" so broadly on something because of how different everyone treats their stuff.

Did I once say that I am concerned about what you do with your money? Angry, at you wasting your money, lol. Once again you can burn it for all I care, it’s not mine. He we go with the I am high and mighty and others are poor because we don’t have a 22 tundra. Get over yourself. It’s a fucking truck. There’s always somebody richer than you or me.

I also think that CR is a bit over the top, both ways. I have seen them rank Honda accord or civics or another Japanese manuf vehicle low just because. And the in the same ranking a crappy ass Chevy Trax as being better. But like I said and another member said, when it’s to our favor we are all for it but once it’s against it the pitch forks come out. I am guilty of that from time to time though.

I’ve owned 2 dyson uprights, 2 sticks, and 2 purifier fans. Every single one has had a warranty claim.

dyson isn’t that great and battery life both operating run time and life expectancy blows. But their CS is top notch and will replace anything . And there’re aesthetically pleasing

I've owned 3 Dysons and none of them have had any issues, so my anecdotal evidence invalidates yours.

    ;)

(I did have one hose that I chose to replace...in another 5 years it *might* have been problematic. I will say they said "Well, it'll cost you $2.....aaaahh fugeddaboudit, we'll just send it to you for free." LOL

it was also the most reliable by a wide margin, there is a lot to be said for that

that said I want a next gen truck with typical Toyota QDR, we’re not all the way there yet but hopefully getting better

There's what, 3-4 posters in this thread that actually own a 22? Everyone else is Gen 2 or 2.5 not contributing in any way other than the reliability of a 14 year old platform? I would certainly hope the oldest platform on the market would be the most reliable.

Which shows your knowledge of the 22. Do you know why the 22 rear end wouldn't behave this way while yours does? Hint, they changed the rear end!

There is no debate, and never has been one for anyone who can do very basic math. The V35A-FTS is, and has always been a 3.4L.

No intent to argue, just thought I’d mention for the sake of interesting science that the notorious twerking shown in that video and testing by ford has less to do with suspension and frame strength and more to do with harmonics. The specific frequency of the 2nd gen frame at that speed over bumps that are that distance apart causes that extreme bounce. There is a reason ford chose specifically 28mph to do the test. Their truck did best at 28mph and the competition they set out to disparage (a new class leading tundra) happened to do the worst.

    No.

The days of extremely reliable vehicles are probably over. Thank emissions regulations for that.

So from this point forward we have two choices if we keep vehicles long term:

1.) Locate and buy pre-owned vehicles with reputations for extreme reliability and plan/budget to recondition.

2.) Budget to buy new and purchase an extended warranty if you keep vehicles long enough to need the extra coverage.

With the above in mind, there is probably no point at all in showing brand loyalty. Prior positive brand experience probably doesn’t matter at all, at least not in the foreseeable future. I wish it weren’t the case, because it is tough to ignore how good my 2007 Tundra has been and I would like to think a new 2023 would give similar good trouble free service, but past performance does not equal future performance. Just like the stock market.

So if you are buying new, buy the car or truck you like the best, that has the most things you value for the best price. Focus on the dealer and their service departments, because you’re probably going to be visiting them more often than you like. Make sure they have a good loaner policy in place etc.

The entire 1/2 ton truck market has me scratching my head as to why on earth I would even bother buying a new one if my current truck runs and drives? Why would I spend north of $60-$70K on a 1/2 ton truck?

It used to be you could get into a nice one for somewhat reasonable money that would run forever if you kept up on maintenance, and it had utility. The sacrifices to driving enjoyment and comfort on the road where we spend 99% of our miles, and the higher operating cost were reasonably offset by utility and durability/longevity. Now all we have are utility, and frankly HD trucks can be had that are just as reliable at this point for the same money that are way way more capable of utility.

So for those of us on this forum who already own some form of 1/2 ton truck that works, I don’t see a case to buy any kind of new 1/2 ton for the money required. Keep your old rig, maintain it and drive it. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket and want a new daily driver, go buy something other than a 1/2 ton truck, frankly for $60-$70K you can buy a seriously nice car that will be faster, drive better, be more comfortable, and burn less fuel. Just keep your old truck and go buy a nice new car, or SUV if you need more space in your daily.

I'd like to know the difference in the number of issues in the early '22's compared to the number in '22's built later in the year. I expect that the frequency of issues decreased as Toyota addressed the root causes of the issues. The closest thing I will likely see is a comparison of '22 and '23 models. If the frequency of those issues decreases across time, then it shows that Toyota is serious about their Quality Improvement.

    Agreed.

I hope my pessimistic assessment of the current crop of 1/2 tons and the new Tundra is not correct. We will have to wait until the 2024 model years are out before 2023 data is in to see if Toyota got their act together or not.
