To Vinyl or to plasti dip.....

The roof on my new Tundra has seen better days... fading a bit. I'd like to help it out and cover it. Either by having itwrapped flat black or I could plasti dip it. Once it's lifted, u wont be able to see the roof much and flat black will be almost invisible on the dark green truck.
*vinyl is more expensive, not sure how long it'll last? Will rocks chip it?

*Plasti dip is cheaper, I'm confident I can make it look decent... and you can touch it up. Also not sure it will last...

Opinions?

 

I've never plasti dipped that large of a surface but it's always held up very well for me. Plus it's easy to touch up like you said. You could always plasti-dip then if you decide you'd rather it be vinyl then all you wasted was a couple $5 cans of dip.

 

I believe I have seen more than a few guys over a tw do hoods. I know there is a site for nothing but painting plasti dip and you have 5 gallon buckets you put in a sprayer and go.

I have olasti dip stuff on my tundra and my tacoma both. Tundra its been on there for 3 years now. I had one nick on it and it was faster just to peel it off and do it again then try to fix it.

My back bumper on my tundra has vinyl (do to a non driving woman who hit the truck in the rear) it did have plasti dip and it transferred to her car nicely. if you go with vinyl make sure you use 3m vinyl only. Its not cheap but worth the money imo.

 

Yeah I've seen Erics. He has vinyl on the hood and roof. But hasn't had it long enough to know how it holds up. There's a ton 9f uou tube vision dipping roofs. Takes time but doable.

If you want it really durable, maybe line X the roof?

 

No I don't need that. Just something to block the uv rays from causing further damage.

 

Sand it and use a epoxy primer for now that will seal the metal from damage if you have rust in that area in question.

 

No, no rust. But pretty decent clear coat flaking and paint fading

 

I would plasti dip if first man if it doesnt work your only out of pocket what 15 bucks and some prepared time in it. Plus it comes off.

 

Yeah true. I'm gonna try to dip the badges first. Depending on how that goes I'll make up my mind

 

What do you use to touch up platidip? Just more plastidip?

If the spot was smaller, I would spray some into a paper plate or something, use a Q-tip and just paint it back on. It'll dry and smooth back out.

Holy crap lol. It's been a while since I've done it but it's cheap stuff.

 

X2... make sure your first coat is very light and if I were you I would use at least 7 coats. That will ensure that if and when you decide to peel it off it should come off easily. The more coats you put on the thicker it is and the easier it is to peel. Also the obvious would be the thicker it is the more durable it should be.
