I feel you, but I do think it's a safety mechanism, aka thief proof. I know Subaru does the same, once the door is opened, the engine is off, so every morning your starter works twice.

while that is probably true as a Canadian that lives in a deep freeze during the winter months many vehicles here have auto-starters on our vehicles. Every one i've driven requires the key to be in the on position in the ignition to drive (with vehicles that have a key-start) and has an engine cut off that activates as soon as you touch the brake pedal if its not.
This all to me means it must have something to do with the keyless ignition system.

If you would do a simple search of the 3rd Gen forum you'd find a number of posts about this subject.

It's not for safety or antitheft purposes, it's because of a dumbshit decision or lack of. The number of vehicles I have driven where the remote start continues to run after the vehicle is unlocked and opened is frustratingly high considering this BS with the current gen. My 2.5 gen did not have this issue. It makes absolutely no sense at all and there is zero reasonable justification for it. If the key is not present in the ignition when the brake pedal is pressed, there is no stealing the vehicle for the average ill-equipped car thief. For those more capable, shutting off when the vehicle unlocks would not stop them anyways. It's absolute bull shit and Toyota knows it. That's why they teased "a fix" months ago and it's been crickets since. Literally my most hated thing with this truck. It drives me absolutely insane to the point I don't even use it anymore because I fear I will lose my shit and start busting my own windows out and ripping off my side mirrors on a morning where nothing is going well and I snag my belt loop on something before reaching my truck.

man if that's really their doing that's pretty rough. The worst would be to offer a solution to this but as yet another add on for the paid subscription service.

I'd gladly pay a small monthly fee to not have the shit turn off as soon as I unlock the truck. I was paying a monthly fee for the system I had on my 2.5 gen, so not a big deal. But it's obviously not even an option. Huge mistake by Toyota.

The engine stays on when I open my Frontier door. The fob is in my pocket and my truck acknowledges that.(Without that fob in my pocket the truck will cut off after ten minutes.) I put my foot on the brake pedal and tap the push to start button which turns control over to me. I drive away..... and comfy

I don't have my truck yet, but wasn't this resolved with an OTA update?

"Finally Toyota is updating the Remote connect remote start system to stay running when you open or unlock the door. It looks like things are changing soon! Remote connect and drive off is the name of the new option."

    Lots of stuff!
I used mine remote once and when I got in it was still running. I pushed the start button and it stayed running and everything else turned on. I have a Limited trim if that makes a difference. Also in Canada so we might have a different program. Seems good to me. My Ridgeline would shut off.

Mine shuts off too. It has to be some sort of joke that I don't get. Last thing I want to do is have two engine starts on a cold morning.
While they're at it, quit turning the motor off when I shift into park and then immediately refiring only for me to shut it down manually.

I don't understand how this gets through the gauntlet of engineers

Does anyone know if the length of time our trucks run with remote start can be extended beyond 10 minutes?

What makes me crazy is if I don't turn the auto stop/start off, every time I pull in my garage it shuts off and starts back up just to have me shut it off again because I just pulled into my garage.

Have you checked on the head unit if there has been a software update released? If there's an update you need to download it and install it on the vehicle...at least that's how it works on my wife's '22 Lexus.

Mine is up to date. As of the end of October, Toyota still alluded to the fact it wasn't going to do anything about it.

Well I just tried the remote again and the engine shut off when I opened the door! I was certain that it kept running last time.

it looks like mine is the same.

Why... please tell me... why would somebody purposely design this truck to shut off when I open the tailgate??

In a cold climate it matters. For instance. When I remote start my truck I walk to my truck, open the door to get the brush to clean off the snow. The truck stops and stops warming up. I have to physically get in (because you have to push the brake pedal) to start it, only to jump out and go about cleaning off the snow or scraping the ice off the glass. Its just a nuisance. Sometimes I remote start the truck and the kids want to get in before me. Boom, truck is off until I physically get in.

Plus, how good is starting a truck twice in less than a couple of minutes at -30?

My Highlander does the same thing, but I really don't mind.

Also, our trucks will do fine with cold starts, I think it's the driver that is a little sensitive to the cold. lol

isnt this the same guy who said the tundra would get 30 mpg before it came out?

Ill believe it when I see it on the remote start, that would be great.

I've done all the OTA updates and nothing has addressed the remote start "safety feature". Major PITA, but I don't see Toyota caving to customers when they tend to stand on the principle that they know better anyways.
