What oil do you guys all put in your 1st gen tundras?

    You guys are using oil?

    this is my first truck to use synthetic, it's got mobil 1 its whole life, so i'll continue. 5k changes so i dont have to write the milage on a piece of tape, and about 100 miles before its due i give it a swig of MMO.

    Amsoil or redline for the bikes, supertech for the titan.

    I was a die hard Mobile1 guy for years, in my track cars and DD's. I have since switched to Walmart Supertech High Mileage and get Blackstone reports. The oil holds up very well (I do add BG MOA with each change). My '01 Tacoma (SC and Meth) with 400K on it doesn't burn a drop, nor does the Ridgeline with 170k. All Blackstone reports are good. I change the Tacoma every 5,000 and just follow the maintenance minder on the Honda. Just picked up an '08 CM and changed the oil to Supertech last week (with MOA) It has almost 250k so I'll be interested to get the Blackstone report back on it. I did notice that the price of Supertech has gone up substantially and is only roughly $5 less than Mobile1 now, so for $5 I may move back. I think you can basically run whatever oil you want. I did a ton of research on Supertech before I moved over to it. My Blackstone reports didn't show much if any difference in the levels of additives from Mobile1 to ST. I'm comfortable with it. The Blackstone report for me is the key.

    I think this is the take-away. Change it on time, and pretty much any brand will be fine.

    I think the real argument to be made is how one defines "on time".

    "On time" varies based on an array of factors, this list is sorted (IMHO) in order of most important to least important:
    • If you've had any event requiring break-in or earlier maintenance, i.e. some work would create debris in oil
    • Type & frequency of driving you do: Mostly short tips vs. mostly long trips vs. mix of both
    • Type, weight, composition of oil used
    • Whether or not you applied additives to oil
    • Age of oil
    Clearly the first point isn't going to impact much of anyone, it's so rare we're doing anything in our engines that'll make shavings etc. Which means the type of driving you do and how often you do it are totally critical. We've seen how damn sludged up and/or varnished a couple of the low-mile member's engines are, it's no secret: Short trip driving is horrible for these engines.

    To that point, I've read more than one study indicating full synthetic oils leave less varnish on internals when used the exact same ways as dino oils, though. But I've also read anecdotes about how this is negated either because (A) the driver is waiting longer between changes due to full syn's claims, which could be years in some cases, and (B) dino oil is changed more frequently, due to lower life expectancy.

    Mobile 1 every 4k miles or once a year; whichever comes first (usually the latter).
    When I get her out to drive I make sure I get a good mix of driving in usually including the interstate.

    Castrol high mileage full synthetic @ 5k intervals. K&N filter or AFE power filter. Wife’s Sequoia gets the same treatment

    163k on tundra

    Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 high mileage, and Fram Ultra Synthetic oil filter. Thankfully, oil and filter changes on our trucks are VERY easy to do.

    I get Mobil1 5w20 full synthetic from work for free, so I use that. Also use the larger Wix 51515XP oil filter. Almost 2" larger in every dimension vs. standard 2UZFE sized filter.

    Redline in diff, trans, and power steering. No other addatives.

    I've seen time and time again in shootouts and videos where the performance of Toyota's OEM filters (oil and air) stomp other major names' dick in the dirt. The oil filters do a better job of screening and are more substantial, and the air filters clean with less restrictions plus less dust than bullshit K&N pumps out, dyno tests done by a couple of different publishers show performance loss in dyno tests happens with K&N while the OEM air filters tend to place in the top 3.

    Outside of that, why should you buy OEM? Toyota designed their filters with longevity of their engines in mind, you're literally not going to find a better filter out there. They're not in the business to make a buck. They want the reputation. OEM all the way. I would never consider it with other brands, I had my favorites and stuck with them. Nothing but OEM after all the reading and watching I've done. And you can buy in bulk from the dealer pretty cheap, shipped free, no tax at some places.

    The Mobil 1 filters are supposedly better than OEM but I cannot justify the price since they’re more expensive.

    I couldn't manage to get any under $3 like I have in the past, I was pressed knowing I had several short-interval OC coming to clean out my top-end. But this was the last order I placed for pickup at my local dealership. I usually swap washers every 3rd OC, hence adding them. I think half a dozen filters for around $25 is pretty damn good, but I dunno. If you can't got anything local, I'll order from a dealership that doesn't charge tax and gives you free shipping.

    It's so interesting seeing folks oil filter preferences. I've run Fram oil filters in my vehicles for years without issue. But everyone has their preferences. Next time I'm in the city, I'll have to pick up some genuine Toyota and Subaru oil filters. I had been taking my Subaru and Toyota's to the dealers for oil changes up until 6 months ago when oil change prices went from $60-70 to $120.
