That’s a pretty good width if you’re comfortable you may lose some of that with bar ends. I’ve seen a lot of the GP2’s out in the wild. Another option may be something like SQlabs internal mount bar ends for a different position for you hands without losing bar width.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
As the owner of a pretty thoroughly wrecked L5/S1 disk, I’m looking to get back on the bike but it will need to be full suspension outfit. My trusty old Trek 4400 just transmits too much into the old spine. Plus I’d love to have such fancy features as disk brakes that can actually you know…. Slow the bike down when needed.

What is it realistically going to take $$$ to get a full suspension mountain bike that doesn’t suck? Currently only ridden 26” is it worth my time to go with a larger wheel?

I mostly enjoy hill climbing (because I hate myself) and moderate trails, at 43 years old with a real job and a family; doing fast downhill work is not in the cards due to risk of injury.

Ideas? Get me pointed in the right direction with a realistic budget.

I don’t personally ride downhill but my friends who do all ride a 27.5” wheel. Budget wise, they are spending about $6-8k for a full suspension downhill bike.

Edit: I realized you said hill climbing and not downhill. I still think you’ll be better off with a 27.5” wheel since there are so many option in that arena. I’m not sure about pricing but it’s probably not much different, maybe a bit less.

@TXRailRoadBandit73, you've gotten some padded shorts, right? You were mentioning a new saddle, but shorts help a lot. Also, I had moderate success using a stem riser instead of swapping handlebars. May save you a few bucks. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet were pedals/shoes. They're nice for the climbs. Any plans for those?

@Coal Dragger, I still have my old 26" hardtail but bought my wife a 29er a few years back. I really, really enjoyed riding hers the day I took it out with a buddy. See if you can't borrow a niner to see how you like it and if the jump is worth it. If not, the 27.5" would probably be the way to go.

No on the shorts, but it's popping up on my FB ads, not doing the clip pedals or shoes, just light trails or back roads, nothing too serious yet, as I have a bad knee

@JRS forgot to mention that I got e*thirteen 35 mm riser bar with a Funn 35mm clamp steam, I've been scouring the net looking for a stem that has a angled rise to it to put my posture more upright, but haven't found anything

If your looking to take some edge off the jolt for riding some smooth trails, fire roads, etc you can find a decent buy. There are full suspensions from TREK and Giant that will do that around 1500-2500. New and used. Less if you find some deals and right now there are deals to be found.
most of the newer bikes are gonna be 27.5 and 29". Yes it's worth your time to go bigger. The 27.5 will corner sharp turns and switchbacks better but the 29" is a great all around.
Some parameters: Try to find something 2018 or newer. The geometry is different giving you a more upright position. You can add some stack under the headset to decrease the bent over position and may be more comfortable.
There are deals out there especially at local shops. A lot of shops got their pandemic orders in and are flush with bikes that nobody is buying right now, At least in my area.

If you start getting into longer rides / hours in the saddle, the shorts will be worth it. One thing people get wrong about cyclists is thinking the outfits are a fashion statement. Nobody I know likes wearing the diaper pants, but they sure do make long rides more comfortable. Well, maybe tolerable is a better word, they won't work magic and make all the discomfort go away, but they do help.

Good thing about cycling shorts, the MTB'ers have some options that look more like regular shorts than the typical tight fitting cycling shorts. You can get those with built in chamois, or without - in which you can wear chamois "underwear" beneath them.

And don't forget chamois butter. Keep your undercarriage happy instead of chapped/rashed.

I would also add, spend the money on a higher quality chamois/short. Again, this is an area I've found to be worth the spend. I've had good luck with Pearl Izumi's mid/high end chamois. I have one from Cannondale that was good (found it on sale). Canari seems to be everywhere and cheaper, but I've never been happy with their gear.

You don't have to spend $6K to get a decent bike. Trek makes good bikes. Check out the one in the link. My friend has one of those and it's a bike with a decent frame. Usually it's good to get a good frame that way you can upgrade the components at your leisure/budget. Could go up from there to the Fuel EX7 if your budget allows it, which starts in the mid $3's. It's daunting searching for a bike but most bikes from the mid $2's on up are half way decent and won't break on you.

I’d also recommend going to a mountain bike focused bike shop and getting professionally fitted. Given your situation, I think geometry and suspension are far more important than anything else, including price as much as I hate to say it. You never know, a $2-3k bike may be perfect for you but spending a bit more may make sense if it gives you a better ride on your back.

    You’re probably right.

It’s funny I can squat, deadlift, do power cleans and other silly shit without bothering my back. But if put too many miles on the bike vibrating and pounding I feel it the next day.

Everyone has different opinions, but FWIW, I’ve always received saddle sores for years with all chamois and even using creams and stuff. About 2 years ago I purchased SQLabs short liner (chamois) and haven’t had a single one since.

I really think buying the right saddle is one of the most important upgrades you can make on a bike. I went through multiple saddles before I found one that really worked for me - Brooks Cambium C17. I also really liked the Brooks B17 (after about 500 miles of break in) but it was too much of a theft risk for my commuter. With that said, some people never get comfortable in a Brooks saddle. It’s all very personal. If you eventually decide to change your saddle, talk with your local bike shop. They may let you try a few out before committing.

Regarding chamois, I like my Bontrager shorts. Just remember to ditch the underwear if you ride with a chamois short or liner.

I've taken a few years off from riding and this thread has me wanting to start looking at the new model Trek Fuels and Niners. But first to finish setting up the Echelon spin bike with self-hosted Zwift to get in shape. Almost done with the pain cave.

I worked at a bike shop during college, which was only a few years ago for me. I currently ride a YT Jeffsy Core 3
    [IMG]

My advice is buy used if you can. Not everyone is comfortable with doing that I know, but I have had excellent success buying used. 1000$ gets you a 3000$ bike when its used.

You can even take it to a bike shop and have it inspected before purchase. If you inspect the bike thoroughly for cracks and broken stuff and go for a ride and it is fine, chances are it is fine.

If you buy new go with Giant. They are the best bang for your buck by far. They are just as nice as Specialized and Trek but they are about 1/3rd less. Specialized and Trek make nice bikes too, but they are super overpriced. At a budget of 1000$, you want to milk out every penny of it. Polygon is also a good brand.
