10,000 mi oil change

I don’t trust the company who stands ready to sell me a new vehicle with how to keep my current vehicle running as long as possible.

I am often off-road and/or hauling. I fit just about any definition of “severe use”. I was doing 10k OCI with Amsoil until I watched this video. I now use Kirkland oil, 5k OCI. Gas engines seep fuel into the oil. Sitting in the oil, the fuel will start breaking down in the oil. Gotta get it out of there at 6mo or 5k miles (I never make it to 6mo). It’s not typically a problem until you accumulate 150k miles or more on the engine. Watch 1:43-4:08.

The car care nut guy is the most intelligent person in the world. None of the engineer from any car makers knows about engine and oil better than him. It is great that people who believe him and listen to him. I am not.

You're talking about the same engineers that removed the transmission cooler that had been in place on every prior year with the same engine and transmission. It's not always about the best solution, its about the most cost effective solution. Their main concern is to make sure you can make it out of the warranty period which you absolutely will doing 10k oil changes but the chances that you will be burning more oil at 100k will 10 oil changes vs 100k with 20 oil changes is pretty high.

 

I agree. Growing up in a family of engineers, I have no doubt that they are some of the most brilliant and innovative minds ever. However, most engineers are limited by the demands of who is paying them to achieve a result while balancing cost effectiveness.

If the engineers had their way, they'd design the best vehicle possible, but it wouldn't be cheap. At the end of the day, a 10K OCI is what the engineers say is the bare minimum that will exceed the warranty period.

 

And even then they are still able to recommend 5k oil changes for vehicles under "special operating conditions" which is more people than it's not but most people don't know this since the dealer certainly is not going to advertise it but it is right on Toyotas FAQ

I think you also have to consider the oil company engineers advertising the oil that lasts 10K miles… and the oil filters that last until 20K. What is the marketing angle there? Collusion?

 

In my experience with high mileage oil changes on bmws which is 20k mi almost all the oil gaskets would fail and leak way sooner than vehicles that got 5k mi oil changes oil is super abrasive to gaskets and sealants.Most of the bmw are sulev engines . Sometimes it's about meeting government environmental regulations that extends oil changes occur.I notice my oil on my 5.7l comes out black at 5k mi so I do it 4500k mi. I have took apart bmw with 20k mi oil changes the build up in engine and timing chain guides valve covers is really bad compared to 5k mi oil changes. Specially now with variable valve timing solenoids need clean oil in the orfices avoids sticking.

 

What brand of oil should I use at 10k? What about 5k?

 

From what I'm reading, there are zero engine oils appropriate for 10K mile intervals. If that is what you're asking.

They do that to manage their warranty risk because they have ZERO PERCENT (0%) assurance that the owner hasn't run E85 on the oil. The whole ball of wax is so mindlessly stupid at its core.

 

OEM is always a safe bet. I went from Amsoil @ 10k to Kirkland @ 5k. Side bonus: two oil changes now cost less than one oil change used to. My engine is quiet with Kirkland. Much quieter than when I was using Mobil1 Advanced Fuel Economy.

My only conclusion is that Kirkland must have a lot of signatures in it.

In my experience most engineers primarily want to do interesting and challenging enginerding things, building the "most robust for the application" is a secondary goal.
This is how you get the transmission oil cooler removed because engineers did the math and figured out that the transmission warmer could also remove enough excess heat form the transmission fluid that it wouldn't completely breakdown until 100K mile under average conditions. Instead of doing the obvious robust engineering solution of just adding a separate transmission fluid cooler when the AC condenser had to be redesigned for the new refrigerant.

 

I still do 10K OCI at dealership for my Tundra because of the warranty. For my other vehicles, I did it every 17.5K and I am using Mobil-1 ultimate full synthetic for the last few years. Mobli-1 claimed their ultimate synthetic will last 20K. There was one time I didn't change out the oil until 22K. I still have the 22K sample that I may send to lab for analysis. There is no negative thing as I know for now with my OCI.

 

I think all or mostly highway miles your good doing 10k with good oil/ filter. My truck is my work truck and my personal. Truck. Some days at work I may idle 3 to 4 hours a day. So I change mine a little after 4k but always before 5k. Mobil one an Toyota oil filter.

 

I think 'they' say freeway speeds constant driving is 10% of city driving is as far wear and tear.

 

I had my 21 done at 5000 miles with my mechanic. I don’t trust the dealer doing it. I have now about 9600 miles and no flashing service light yet. I don’t know if I will have him do it at 10,000 miles. I just checked it and it’s not that dark and full synthetic which every one is using. Might wait a lot longer.
