Small clunk when releasing the brake in reverse

Prolly should stop and set the E brake first then engage into Park. When pulling away......put your foot on the brake pedal first, disengage the E brake which would keep the weight of the truck off the pawl and drive away.

 

Yep, that's habit now.

 

Your clunk is not pawl related it seems. Was just a thought though. Hopefully you can figure it out!

 

I know this isn't the basis of the thread, but just had to comment. My mother in law, drives a Kia Van with 100K+ miles on it. They live about 2 miles away from me and we have a sloped driveway. She's probably over the house 2-3 times a week. Pulls down the driveway, put's that bad boy right in park and just lets it sit on the tranny, no parking brake necessary in her opinion. Every time she leaves, I can hear it bang into reverse from inside my house, one of the most cringeworthy sounds, I can even hear it far back in my yard. I have no idea how those gears have not exploded yet.

 

This is what I was taught have used, havent seen any raeson to change yet,if technology changes i will too.

 

Another piece of the puzzle here...

When backing out of my garage if I put the truck in neutral first, take my foot off the brake and then put it in reverse to back out then I do not get the clunking sound. It seems to have to do with the brakes and like they are sticking or releasing.

It will also do the clunk when putting it into drive and then releasing the brake and moving forward. If I put it in neutral and release the brake first then move it into drive it doesn't do it.

It will also only do it after sitting for 3-4 hours and I cannot repeat it after initially moving the truck.

 

I feel like I would expect a clunk when going from Neutral to a gear without the brake being pressed. But I could easily be wrong on that.

Have you checked out your calipers? Maybe the rods holding the pads in place (allowing the pads to float) are grimed up. I know mine were on my 2020 a few months ago when I was changing out my rotors. Possibly after sitting for 3-4 hours, it lets them cool down and build back up resistance. Just a thought.
