Rear Differential Going out possibly

On my 2000 Toyota 4runner, it seems like the rear differential (open) may have gone out.

I am just needing some assistance to confirm that this is in fact the issue, not something else.

So when I put the truck in drive or reverse initially, it clanks very loudly (metal on metal). When I start driving it it will make the same loud pop sporadically every 20 seconds or so, if I drive at a steady rate. When I begin to slow down it clanks as well.

At first I was thinking the U-joints could be the issue. However I jacked up the rear of the 4runner. Then was able to spin the rear tires forward and backward by hand (with the truck off and in park) with varying amounts of force. When I was doing this I noticed the drive shaft was not spinning with the tires.

From my thinking, it seems that if the issue was the transmission, when I spin the back wheels in the air by hand, the driveshaft would be spinning as well.

I mean, I can work the tires in circles all day with the rear end jacked in the air and the truck in park.

Do you think it could still be the u-joints or does the fact stated above, seem like sound enough evidence to point to a rear differential that has gone out or is going out?

I will be taking a look at the gears once I take the cover off and will be looking for excessive wear on the gears.

    Update

I am going to take the driveshaft off and see if the U-joints are acting up, try to spin them, etc..

If those are all working the next thing I am chcking is pulling the differential over off and inspecting the fluid/gears in there.

I had this happen in my 2000 Tundra...the spider gears on the carrier were shredded. Gone. No mas. Non existent. Completely shaved clean.

They were just floating around in the oil. It wasn't until the oil was drained that the chunks of gear started to lodge where they shouldn't. Caused some pretty serious popping and torque steer in my front end.

That ended up being a new front dif

That is what I am afraid of. I actually pulled the driveshaft off before going to work and noticed one of the U-Joints seemed to have too much resistance and skipping. I ended up replacing that and putting it back on the truck. I did not get a chance to test it yet as I had to go straight to work after.

I am hoping that U-joint was the issue, if not, then I will just buy a rear differential rebuild kit for it. I am still really hoping the transmission is not the problem.

I'm betting you resolved the problem. Bad u-joints cause a lot of issues.

You have a differential cover on your rear axle? Not a factory unit?

If you replace one u-joint, I'd do all of them. Cheap insurance and cheap thing to rule out.

Hopefully that does the trick. Yanking the third member out isn't too difficult anyhow if it doesn't fix er

Update: u-joint did not fix the problem. Pulled the cover off and saw very large chunks of metal in the bottom, here is a picture of the gears. I will be replacing it over the weekend.

    Spider gears...shot! Sucks man.

Any chance of finding a newer rear end at a pick n pull. Could save you some serious scratch.

Also, do you have a differential cover??? Or did you have to pull the third member assembly out?? (This, by the way, requires sliding the rear axles out a bit)

Also, there is a significant chance that your ring and pinion have suffered damage as a result of loose metal chunks floating around and causing the binding you were experiencing as well.

    Holy shit. That sucks.

So I am totally confused. I was under the impression that a 2000 4Runner had a 3rd member style housing?

He's working on a Ford and just doesn't want to admit it.:anonymous: or is it a monster4runner with Dana 60 axles? I've never seen a Yota rear diff with a cover.

I've been watching this thread. You live in OK??? Call YotaYard. They are here in Denver and will most likely have good used pull off parts you need. Shipping should be minimal to OK. YotaYard.com

Just do it. YotaYard is the place to go. .. . Call them...

I blew out the spiders in my 2000 tundra and put a used 3rd member in for $300. It held up just fine for me.

Be careful with the axle seals, they are prone to leak.

I just know about YotaYard and female owned. I've driven by YotaYard many times after watching the Rockies lose which is fine with me since I'm a Dodgers fan.heh...heh

Yota Jim's is better organized and spread out so it's not a total cluster like yota yard. If I remember right, she got the business in the divorce so Jim started a new place.

I'm just outside finishing up my 24oz Hamms and watering the front yard because all of the thunder storms missed Aurora. Quite frankly any border would be good about now. Excitement now would be getting a $2 return on a $2 scratcher.

Dang. I never knew about YJim's place. Ex vs Ex. Good. Got two Toyota "yards" outcome. YotaJims website is definitely better organized and from the pics the yard seems to be bigger and less clustered.

It is an aftermarket rear differential, that likely explains this happened. I am currently looking into buying the rebuild kit for this particular differential. It was quite a hassle to track it down. As far as going back to stock, I am not sure if I am going to do that or not since there have already been some modifications that would need to be changed. All in all, the rebuild kit is like 250 Dollars, so not too bad. I appreciate everyone's helpful advice and offered to drive it down halfway and meet me. Luckily the rebuild kit is sold here in OKC locally.
