    Hello everyone,

I’m in a pretty bad situation with my 2021 crew max tundra. The catalytic converters were stollen about 2 months ago and every dealership in the State of Texas has told me that they won’t be getting any replacements for at least 6 months with no guarantee on shipment dates or quantity. There are 19 other trucks ahead of mine in line to be fixed so my truck could easily be waiting to be repaired for 1-2 years.

They told me that they had installed and wired in aftermarket cats for numerous trucks that demanded it and that it was 50-50 if they ran properly without issues. I know this could just be the dealership wanting me to use their stuff but my truck is brand new with only 15,000 miles on it and I’d hate to permanently damage the vehicle in some way by running off market cats for 1-2 years while waiting on new ones from Toyota.

Have any of y’all ran into this problem with some way to fix it? At this point I’m about ready to buy a new truck and sell the tundra whenever its fixed.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Matt

Use the search function. This has been addressed countless time.

Short story, they won't have your truck for 1-2 years but the 6-9 month wait time is about average it seems. Aftermarket cats really don't work well with a Tundra but they do for some folks so the 50-50 is about accurate as well. The dealership may buy your truck as is so they aren't out your rental fee. Might be worth talking to them about it IF they have something you want.

If you are keeping your truck after getting it fixed, or buying a different truck. Order cat protection plates! Saves you a lot of hassle and so far they have worked as deterrents.

Yeah I definitely wish I had just bought some cat protection plates before all this happened. I asked what they’d give me for the truck for sale and trade in and their offer was insultingly low so Im better off waiting for it to get fixed and then selling it. Thanks for the advice.

That sucks. I know in my area if the dealership is on the hook for the rental, they rather buy your truck and save themselves money.

Definitely get not taking a low offer. If you are keeping your truck, order the plates now so they can go on as soon as the truck is repaired. Good luck to you.

Why would the dealer care if your cats get stolen? I dont see how thats their problem or responsibility to provide rental.

Because most auto insurance would only cover up to 30 days of rental, the rest is on the dealer to be of "good faith" and provide a rental.
My neighbor's '16/'17 Tundra had a rear cam leak that the truck has been in the dealership for more than 7 months now, and still no end in sight.
They (dealership) paid for the rental after the first month, did four oil change on that first car, neighbor got pulled over on expired registration, dealership got him another rental and he's still driving that rental.....

    Mad times I tel you.

As stated above, the dealerships are covering the rentals after the first month. Back when cat theirs started and the insurance companies learned that Toyota didn't have "enough" reserves of spare cats (but why would they when that part doesn't normally need mass replacements) there was a legal battle between the insurance companies and Toyota and to my understanding Toyota lost and essentially got stuck with the remaining rental fee until they can provide the required parts.

    But again, crazy times.

This is unfortunate and if you are waiting on OE cats then it’s going to be 6-9 months at least. Had a local shop with a 2021 Tundra sitting in their lot for about that time. I brought my Camry in for service back in mid summer and they told me the Tundra has been there for 6 months. I drive by the shop all the time and just recently noticed that it is finally gone. I’m from MN so looks like it is a nation wide issue.

That’s sucks. I bought my Valhalla plates soon as I pretty much got my 21 Pro. Not taking a chance.

    Alot of them
Order cat plates now and wait for yours to get repaired. Most insurance companies wont pay for anything other than OEM parts, and even if they did, they are not going to pay a second time just to get OEM parts installed once they are in stock. I wouldn't sell your truck just to end up with a less reliable make/model.

Lesson learned,, especially here in Texas you were well aware of them being stolen. Do the rental care if you can find one and wait wait wait. Stick with OEM because of it doesn’t work then you will be out that money also. It can get even more expensive in a hurry.

As stated above get the plates now or at least on the list so you will have them when cats get in.

Any HELP would have been out there when you bought the truck. Folks could have told you what protection plate thru like or dislike and prices??
