Need Help. Gonna be taking my handguns with me flying. I'm not really liking the idea of using factory case. Also I want to carry both guns in one case. I've been looking at some nice Pelican cases, but hard to decide with just pics. Anyone recommend a good one. This is the one I have been looking at. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Salute

I have a similar Pelican case and it works great. SKB is another good choice. The Pelican I have has 'pick and pluck' foam, you just pull out the foam where the gun sits. The fit is nice and snug. Whatever case you choose make sure to get a TSA approved lock. Something I do when I fly with guns is take some duct tape and after TSA inspects the gun(s) and the case gets locked I wrap some duct tape around the case, both ends on a rifle case. When you get to the other end if the tape is intact you're good, if it's broken you know someone was messing with your case.

Pelican is the way to go. I traveled with government issue and personal weapons in Pelican cases. ive seen them take huge hits (falling out of aircraft onto tarmac) with no damage. peace of mind knowing your guns are safe and secure... can't beat it. pelican coolers are the bees knees as well.

Another vote for Pelican. Used and abused them for years, they are very durable.

Thanks guy's. Pelican it is. After some more research, the Pelican 1300 2 pistol case is my choice.

I use a Pelican for my precision rifle. Can't go wrong with them. I have been extremely happy with mine. I recently purchased a Nanuk hard case for my Mavic Pro drone. I have also been impressed with that one. It was nice because the insert was specifically crafted for the Mavic Pro, so no cutting etc. Im not sure if they offer the same for pistols but its worth a look. Same build quality as my Pelican from what I can see. I like both of them so it would just come down to price for me.

I use a Pelican 1560 and custom cut my foam. No pics now but can take some later. I carry a revolver, 6 pistols, and a number of magazines in it.

Checkn with the airline on the locks, last time I flew on Southwest they did not want TSA locks on my gun case, something about keeping everyone out of it after the gate inspected, but they did stay in the area incase TSA has an issue.

Thanks for the heads up. I talked to TSA agent and was told check with the airline your flying with. Hopefully these TSA locks I got will suffice.

I also did this one for flying with my CCW - I fly around the country for work and carry everywhere it's legal.

Backslider, your not doing any torturing over there I hope. Hahaha. That's a nice set up . I have been pondering what's the best way to cut out for guns and mags. I might go with a vertical stance as opposed to horizontal.

That was just a mock up, the finished version was must more refined and all the electronics were neatly stored in a project box. Changed phones recently and don't have all my pictures on my phone.. =\

This method works nicely with a flat work area to move the foam around. I did a few rifle cases too and larger sizes can be problematic if you don't think through how you're going to do it before starting. I would thread the resistor wire through the foam at my starting point, then attach to the leads, then power up and get to work. Turned out to work pretty well and cost like $6.

I'll be honest, I went cheap on my rifle pelican and it has ZERO foam in it, but it works better that way for me

I bought a set of 4 with 2 rifle cases and 2 larger square cases for a total of about $300 but none had foam

I discovered my Cabelas 2 rifle bag loaded up fits beautifully in one of the long rifle cases and leaves about 6 inches on one end where I can pack in ears/eyes/spare mags etc and everything stays put

If I skip the ears/eyes and rearrange the bag and mags I can get my plate carrier in there too but it takes some creativity

The large square boxes fit in my toolbox and one stores things like a tarp, 4 way lug wrench, tow strap, compressor and the like in my truck, used the other the same way but for less used but vital gear in my patrol car when I was a cop...now it's currently taking up garage space but I intend to use it again

These work great for packing gear and are lighter than the road cases (forget brand) that are wood and metal which now are used for long term storage in the garage

I have 2 pistol sized Pelican cases with foam that I usent regularly. One holds a pistol and one is my gopro cameras and they are perfect for strapping onto my kayak

I also have one of the small phone sized ones that I use on the kayak as well

I went with TSA approved locks too. That way they don't have to cut them if for some reason they plan on inspecting it later. Be aware that at your destination, they might announce your name over the loud speaker of the freaking airport: "Ron, your firearm is ready for pickup at the airline baggage claim office." LOL The did that to me here in Denver and was awesome to see everyone turn around and look at me.

Do NOT use TSA locks on your gun case. The TSA rules are clear - you use a lock that only you can open. You do not want your firearm stolen during transit. If the TSA needs to inspect your case they should find you and YOU should open the case for them.

As in all instances of firearms, here is were information is all over the place and inconsistent. I've read that too. Have also read lots of times to use TSA locks cause then can open without having to cut. I've never read where they come look for you. And each airline has it's own policies on how to check it in; some want it locked and ready to go and some want it open to ensure ammo is not loaded (and insert inspection papers).

Also Ron, when you get to the counter, don't tell the agent you have a "gun", just say you're "checking in a firearm". Big difference

I fly 4-6 times a month and have for over three years. I carry a firearm daily at home, and in every other state that I legally can when I'm travelling. I have been through most major airports in this country. Many airports will deposit your firearm right out on the luggage carousel (it has happened to me numerous time).

The TSA is pretty clear that they don't want you compromising the security of the firearm by putting TSA locks on it. I use TSA locks on my toolbox and I'm replacing them monthly because they are so craptastic. Use a quality, hardened steel combination lock. If a TSA agent ever asks for the combo or requests a key tell him or her to get bent.

The information is very consistent on the TSA website...

I've been doing this frequently for years, this is one area where I make sure I know and comply with the rules.
