I bought the truck about 5 months ago. I went on a long trip on the interstate during summer vacation used cruise control. Hated the adaptive cruise control because it kept slowing the truck down and used so much more fuel. I turned it off used the gas pedal the rest of the trip.
Is there a way to turn off or disable adaptive cruise control and make it run like older cars with cruise control

Hold it down while pressing it to turn it on.
It should say it in your owner's manual. :duh:

No there isn’t, I agree it’s kinda aggressive but eh it’s nice on long empty stretches with the random semi or two. It’s adaptive or nothing buddy sorry

This method works and I prefer this old school method too. What’s awful is you have to do it each time you turn on cruise control so gets super annoying. The adaptive on the lowest sensitivity setting kind of avoids this, but still the biggest problem is you usually end up creeping behind someone then follow at their speed rather than passing.

You can shorten the distance but if people around you don’t keep the same speed it’s annoying.

Cool. I have a 19 and was trying to be helpful. It’s crazy how Toyota made several model years right?

I like this feature but it's for flat ground only so I rarely use it. If you need to pass someone that is going slower than your cruise setting pull into the other lane, after checking for others, and the truck will accelerate to your preset speed.

    Very little so far
If you're on a busy highway, how would regular old cruise control be better? You'd have to continually manually adjust your speed setting, if what you describe as a busy highway is the same as what I would describe as a busy highway. Of course, what I would describe as a busy highway is one on which i wouldn't be using cruise control.

I have a 19 as well, same thing works, hold down the cruise button and it will switch standard cruise control, I had no idea either until someone told me. Its all I use in my 19 because I hate how the adaptive slams on the brakes and then also slams on the accelerator. Even regular cruise is annoying with the downshifting on even the slightest incline. Much easier to hold 6th gear using my foot.

Hilarious. The replies you’ve received are only as snarky as the posts you first made. If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it.

Yeah I was wrong but also I didn’t give the info maliciously, I genuinely learned that feature from the initial response. What I’m saying is all the other responses. Yall just take some stuff crazy serious. You know that scene in Superbad where the kid is freaking out about soccer? That’s a lot of people on here

Almost reads like you're looking for an autopilot in traffic. I've never experienced the adaptive cruise control SLAMMING on the brakes or pulling G's in acceleration. I use mine for open highway driving......not in high density traffic.

I love my radar cruise, which I have in all three of my vehicles. I'd never own another without it.

With that said, I don't use it in heavy traffic areas. In those situations, I'd rather take control myself. But I do use it on longer trips and in lighter traffic. These are cases when it only needs to intervene when the occasional semi pulls into the lane, a slow car merges, etc. I only use it well out of the city and I absolutely love it and find it makes the drive much more relaxing for me. It took me a while to get used to it though, but I've had it since 2013 so I've had plenty of time to figure out when I like to use it and when I don't.

I was actually excited that cruise still worked the old way when I bought my Tundra. I’m not a huge fan of adaptive unless I’m in very light traffic on long stretches of road. I use old CC 90% of the time.

Im just a very smooth driver with my foot so don't like how cruise has knee jerk reactions to inclines or someone slowing down. If you already are a brake gas type driving you might not notice the difference but I've been driving for a living for many years now and know how to hold gears without forcing a downshift up a hill, and how to just let off the gas and let engine braking due its job with out using the brake and allow myself to catch up a bit to the car in front of me and then wait for them to accelerate. The more you shift up and down, and use your brakes the more wear on the truck and more gas you burn. The cruise control just on its own will sometimes downshift 2 gears on a small incline just to maintain speed when if the gas was held steadily with your foot you could have maintained torque converter lock and still made it up causing less heat to build in the transmission. Same thing with the adaptive when someone changes lanes in front of you, even though they are doing the same speed, the truck will hit the brakes to create the gap quickly instead of just letting off the gas, and then when it needs to speed back up it does it as quickly as possible rather than smoothly. Most would say I drive like a grandpa.

I love adaptive cruise on 2 lane roads and empty highways. Mine slammed on brakes once when it shouldn’t have, so I’ve been cautious about using it in traffic.

I think when you replied with this comment
It came across as you still thought you were correct and were being snarky yourself. That is why you received the snarky responses in return I assume. I try not to partake in internet arguing as there is never a winner and only loss of my time. Im just responding as an observer. Never respond to something with 100% confidence, unless you know you are absolutely correct.

I found the three adaptive interval gaps to the vehicle in front to be equivalent to:
    1) 2 semis, both with 42’ trailers
    2) 1 semi and 1 school bus
    3) 2 retirees going 2 mph over posted

Whatever this forum told me to do
I'll add some comedy relief to this epic:

    2020 1794 S/C'd @ crank 575hp/600tq

see the Adaptive cruise does not know there is a blower on my truck, so when I go up a hill, the truck's ecu tells the truck to accel based on 381hp...

so this b1tch takes off....then, the truck senses it is accel'ing too fast so it let's off....and so on.

then, say the car in front slows down 10mph...i track it. when Grandpa moves out of the way, once again, the truck's ecu speeds up...fast.

it's entertaining. now that I know the deal, it's easy to manage.

i use adapt cruise all the time.

for comparison - the wife's Tesla has ~TWICE the HP & TQ as my truck, and the cruise control is AWESOME. smooth as warm butter.
