1000 miles on 11/21 might help some Especially with 2 bumpers and 3 bicycles in the back along with a Taco divider and some electrical boxes.

 

You’ll want to retorque along the way at 100 miles and 500 on your UBolts.

Yes they are 6x the cost of the Raybestos pads I bought. I was chatting with Luis aka @Darkness yesterday and he recommended Akebono pads. Rock Auto sells those for $50. I think I'll just roll the dice with my current pads for now. I only put 4-6k miles a year on my truck. These should be fine.

 

You think it’s that important to re-torque?

 

It wouldn’t hurt to at least put a goodentight halfway thru the trip. Especially if it’s just sat, undriven, things will settle and find a new home, you won’t die if you don’t, but it’s easy enough to crank them down

 

Ok, but I’ll have to be sure I have the right sockets. And is it just the u bolts or do I worry about other bolts too?

I should probably check my Tacoma too I guess.

K, so torque wrench and whatever socket I need for U bolts then what else? I need to know diameter and thread? Man, lots to know.

 

It’s not bad, hit up your buddy that has your truck and he will probably know those socket sizes off the top of his head. You can bring just the torque wrench and those couple of sockets… plus a 10 mm whether you need it or not, so that you don’t lose something else that you do need … And maybe a midsize crescent wrench to use to hold the other side in place. Seriously, no big deal. #prevention

 

But the torque spec varies by grade of bolt too. I’ll ask I guess.

I see. Yeah, to get it perfect, I guess you’d need a lot of info. How ‘bout, just snug them up along the way… like, I think, Mo suggested. Your buddy can check them, then you can snug them up when you stop somewhere in the vicinity of the Grapevine, and again ~ 400 miles farther. Skip the torque wrench, use any long bar that works with the right sized nuts.

Well, yeah. Which is why we suggested you re-torque twice. I’d retorque once at around 100 miles, then put it out if my mind forever.

But then you reminded us, this is YOU, and started treading out… so split the difference. The point is not to have any fasteners back off and cause a horrific, catastrophic collision. Because, you know, we don’t want to see your truck on that stupid FB 1st gen fails page. We’d be mortified.

I think the leafs have been on for a few months now. But the u bolts stretch that much? You’ve got me worried about the Tacoma now. At least the Tacu U bolts were used so maybe a little bit broken in.

hammer hangars and u bolt flip don’t change torque spec?

It’s tricky, I guess I just need to pack a checked bag of tools and probably sleeping bag and pad. I was hoping to come down minimal and just drive. I’m super mellow at driving as it is but this truck has serious mods.

I’ll get a little in town driving during the weekend before leaving plus a trip to alignment. And I have friends along the way. Might overnight in San Carlos.

 

Yes, aftermarket ubolts definitely change the torque specs. Ironmans ubolts never made it to the click, just kept stretching.

@bmf4069 might be a good idea to put some wrenches on em... or did you replace ubolts when you had the add-a-leaf installed?

 

Now I’m going to freak you out by asking: “what?!! You reused the bolts on the Tacoma?!!!”

 

I have a J66 on the 2016. So it came with u bolts.

I got it lightly used.
