Did you see if the regulator can be replaced? A shop that rebuilds alternators could let you know. A replacement would be a $30-$50 fix.

You could probably replace it yourself if you can get a part number and see if a replacement one is available.

 

Anyone know if anyone has upgraded to the js alternator?

A 250A beast would be better than trying to squeeze dual alternators into the engine bay.

Talk about a good investment. This Neiko socket set has paid for itself many times over. I think @lsaami recommended it. I'm glad I listened.

I wish I had gotten the smaller DeWalt Impact though. This one is too big to fit most places I need it.

 

Does anyone need this? I bought 2 by mistake and I'll never use this one. I'll give it to someone if it's needed for an upcoming O2 sensor job.

When I decided it was time to get an impact, I read the threads on here and watched comparison videos. Finally decided on the 3/8 stubby Milwaukee Fuel, 18v and adapters to use the 1/2” sockets I have for big fasteners. It took me a while to decide I’d be ok with the 3/8” but it matched or beat 1/2” drivers in test videos. Including with the added adapter for lug nuts.

I know you weren’t asking, and that 20v you have is awesome… but if you’re thinking about another, this smaller, shorter impact fits all the places that one won’t, takes less storage room and pulls off lug nuts for trail tire swaps just fine, and doesn’t take as much muscle to hold it if you’re using it for all-day projects.

I figure it’s nice to have two anyway. For now I’d just go breaker bar on lug nuts if I ever had a chance to wrench.

65 I believe. It even came with a wobble socket which I haven't used yet. It was $150 when I bought it a few years ago.

I plunked down for the 44 to see how much I use it, quite a bit cheaper, no swivels? Not sure I need those.

 

If I'm getting condensation drip below this clamp, is that normal or do I have an exhaust leak there?

 

I had to go through this with my FIL who just bought a '21 or '22 Honda CRV hybrid. It doesn't come with a spare tire because Honda didn't want to change the chassis 2 years into it - they never expected to make a hybrid with that chassis, but it happened, so they had to put the battery where the spare was. They're returning to offer a spare on the Hybrid CRV next year, when the chassis is renewed for the newest model/design.

I think I posted on here about it, actually, it ate up my Sunday morning. They rode on the tire enough that the sidewall was compromised, so even the can of goo and inflator the car was supposed to come with wouldn't have been safe, and I couldn't plug it in good conscience. He was pissed, the dealership not only failed to tell them there was no spare with the car, but also failed to include the only backup they had: The inflator and can of goo.

Anyway, their dealership told them the same when they called, on the way to Miami, after I got them to a Goodyear for a new $350 tire: "No cars come with spares these days!!". I called bullshit on that claim, and went to look it up. The actual truth is, ~75% of cars on the market in 2022 actually DO come with a spare tire. I wouldn't say "1 in 4 new cars not having a spare tire" is equivalent to "most don't come with a spare tire".

I still have no idea what happened with them getting on the horn with the dealership, but they're still pissed about the situation, and the lack of being told. EVERY Toyota in 2022 comes with a spare tire, and from what I've read, they don't intend to change that any time soon.

just running it on twigs and bits of cedar roots i find around the yard. Gotta cut a 2x5 inch hole at the bottom of the big pipe, and figure out how to use the rock drilling swath as a makeshift concrete. Hopefully i crack the big rock the holes are in, and can plant a tree, or i think im far enough from the house to 'safely' build a boiler for some steam fun.

no smoke once the paint burned off the mower body! Which is surprising considering the quality of sticks and bark im burning.

 

I think with TPMS, I’d rather have a cell phone than a donut spare. Full size spare would be best of course but the older I get, the more I would want my shop tools rather than the OEM tools and a scissor jack. So, other than a pickup, where to put all that stuff? It’s also a fair bit of extra weight. For any passenger hauler, I’d probably prefer to forgo it.

Definitely would not be changing a tire on the minivan on the side of the freeway with the family inside. No chance of that.

Given my 6 sets of wheels for 3 trucks, I’m a tiny bit tempted to get a 5th full size wheel for the Odyssey so I could change it out if I needed to. Quick Uber home if the whole family is together when it happens and AAA is slower. Drive back with a truck and real tools and get it swapped quickly.

But in practice it just doesn’t seem super common. I’ve used a donut spare once in my life so far. Totally different story out on trail where a full size spare (or two or three) makes a lot of sense.

 

I always buy full-size spares if the vehicle doesn't come w/one. On all our non-lifted vehicles, I'm perfectly happy with the OEM scissor jack.

I don't need power tools; I have a crossbar. It's impractical to keep power tools charged in a vehicle for one-off emergencies like tire change.

 

My spare tire is original. Dated '01. Since i've got a motorcycle, mom & dad give me an extended range AAA subscription. But like medical insurance and youtube gold i wouldnt waste the money on it.

i do have an old school craftsman 12v compressor.

 

I shelled out money for a full-sized spare on the Corolla after my little incident the other day. Still need to figure out what I'll do for tires. Driving on the freeway with a donut was sketchy. The truck has a slow leak I gotta figure out too.

 

I have a Viair 84P mini inflator I keep in the cars. But it's only good for tires up to 31.5" IIRC.

Love it so much I bought one for my parents.

 

Soapy water and a spray bottle at full inflation...

 

fill it with lpg and use a lighter.

 

Judging by the sidewall it's time for a new tire anyway so I'll throw on a spare.

Yeah, exactly. Uber home, get truck, floor Jack, impact driver and full size spare. If close by. Otherwise AAA if faster.

 

That's one thing I learned from the FIL experience. AAA won't plug or patch a tire due for liability reasons. So if you don't have a spare (which was their case, not yours), you're pretty much boned, they can only tow you to the nearest tire store, and hope there's a proper sized tire in stock for you.

 

AAA is never faster, the first time i used em, my s10 blazer 'overheated' but i determined it was a sensor problem, and fixed it in a napa parking lot before they had even responded. The 2nd time was when the blazers lbj failed, and my dog and i waited like 3-4 hours. The 3rd time was when the brakes locked up on grandmas RV, and i made the 3 hour trip, fixed the brakes, and finished a 40 mile test drive before she called and cancelled. AAA didnt call her back to tell her that the 3 places they called wouldnt haul a 36' class c. And she pays extra for RV service.

 

Yup, FIL waited about 2h15m to get towed from my place - in a major city with oodles of tow trucks - about 6.5 miles east to the Goodyear store. They got out of Goodyear with a brand new tire in 1/4 of the time it took for AAA to get a tow truck here and tow them to the store.

 

Don't know where to put this, but any cowards out there looking to get a 'truck' with lane depature warning and a beepy reverse?



Just imagine how much fun shoddy electrics and body finishing would be to fix. Make it more sensitive to fuel quality, and like and subscribe for the seat heaters.

 

Fair points. But I figure it’s a lost day no matter what. So all about optimizing the other days.
