06’ Tundra

Hey everyone,

new member here with a 06’ Tundra Double Cab. Bought this a few weeks ago with an aftermarket lift, wheels and tires. It has the 4.7 V8. Previous owner did timing belt, water pump, pulleys, serpentine belt. This truck runs like a top. I’ve never had a tundra before.
I’m just curious what I can do for more towing power?

Probably gearing. Get the little 4.7 spinning, and it can hold its own.

In all seriousness, if you're in Jersey, your biggest concern needs to be checking out the frame for rust, since there was such a crazy problem with frames in salt states rusting to pieces. A lot of shady sellers paint to try and hide it. A lot of people buying these 1st gens don't bother to do a lick of research about the frame issues and find they end up buying a pile of undriveable, dangerous, but sexy-on-the-outside garbage .

First off, help us understand what you mean by "more towing power"?

What do you intend to tow, and how does this truck not handle that?

Is your truck 2WD or 4WD? (This will impact some answers such as "re-gearing")

There aren't a lot of power add-ons you can do on these trucks. The bullshit K&N filters will cause a power drop. There's no easy valve spring upgrade like you can do on a GM LS1, using LS6 springs. They've eeked out about as much power as they could.

 

Welcome aboard! What size tires does it have? Re-gearing the differentials might help especially if it's got bigger tires.

 

This guy had the whole frame sprayed.

I only tow my boat twice a year. In for the season and out at the end of the season. Maybe a 10 min ride. I was curious on how well the truck would perform and I was surprised at how well it did. The boat is 24’ long and weighs 3600 lbs.

As far as power I was curious if a plug in programmer (hyper tech etc) would be a benefit to these trucks.

Fresh spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter?

as long as it will drag the boat up the ramp, i dont think a tuner will make enough difference to make a difference, and i think they require 93 octane.

i've always considered my brakes to be adequate, but some of the heavier footed fellows here consider the brakes to be weak. Make sure your load sensing valve and rear brake adjusters are set right.

Yeah, your truck should have no issues with that. OD off is how I'd roll just to knock out that extra gear.

Every bullshitty, gimmicky thing you can think of that may or may work on other trucks won't work on this truck. The biggest power gains folks have seen here without getting inside the engine are moving to long tube headers, which have potential side effects, or installing SC/FI which is silly for towing a boat 2x/year.

The exhaust drone this has is annoying. I’ve looked on rock auto for a stock cat back system which is about $200. I guess that’s not too bad. I called Midas in town and they want $600-$800, and meineke wants $1100. They’re out of their minds.
I’ll do it myself.

Also if you look at the tire pics I posted, these do have a hum. I just want a quieter tire. I can care less about mud terrain tires. I drive 10 min to work.

 

Yeah, Go with a standard all-terrain, it'll make @Pucks18 happy. Consider the Falken Wildpeak AT3W, a lot of guys here are running them and seem really happy. If you want super quiet and good longevity and don't care about knobby or not, price isn't a factor, go Michelin.
