I put down $500 on a 2023 SR5 with the basic TRD sport package. The build date is listed as 11/16/22. Does anyone know if it's possible for my dealer to request an upgrade to the TRD sport premium package? I'd like to add a few more features if at all possible. Am I just stuck with it as is? I appreciate any feedback.

If I'm not mistaken, if it's already have a build date, the specs are finalized. Unless you decide to pass on this and wait it out even more.

No, the dealerships don't get to make requests to the factory like that. You either take what they get or pass and wait for the next one.

Yeah, they don't order anything...they just assigned you to a truck they were already scheduled to get.

Unfortunately, no...they can't change packages. In fact, they can't really influence any part of the build other than ordering some of the Toyota "accessories" (like the tonneau cover, side steps, etc) and installing them at the dealership once the truck arrives.

I can only assume that Toyota does this because of supply chain issues. I got lucky that one of my dealer's early trucks ticked off all of my "required" boxes. However, I hope this system changes by the time I purchase my next truck in 10+ years time.

My understanding is Toyotas have never really been a custom order deal like the domestics. You're never getting a car just build for you, only asking for the next one built in your chosen configuration to come to you. So maybe if you want to add features you'd have to cancel and re-order an example that has the added features you want.

This is in my opinion one benefit to the trim options in Canada. You pick a trim level and you are able to add a TRD package to that trim if you want and that's it. You get what you get. Less options makes it easier in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. Oh well…
It’s still a nice truck as is. I’m coming from a 2017 Tacoma Sport. It was great, just not enough room with kids in the back seat.
It does irk me a bit that I won’t have things like wireless charging and the auto dim rear view mirror like on my Tacoma, but I’m still gaining a lot of room and some other upgrades.

Ask if there’s another coming with those options or get your deposit back if it’s refundable and you really want those options. Better to wait another month or 2 and be happy for years than jump on the first truck and wish you had waited.

Or go to a couple of other dealerships and reserve them at multiple places and the first one that gets what you want in, wins your money.

Then you don't have to start your wait time all over again.

When you see people that are saying...".I have had one on order since Jan and my dealer still hasn't called"...They didn't broaden their horizons, I would cover the entire area go to every toyota dealer you can drive to in a day and reserve what you want.

Who knows by the time the trucks actually come in, they may be willing to make a deal and you can leverage it. You know...well I have that same truck ready at 3 different dealers, if you want me to buy it from you, give me a reason....

You never know a lot of things are changing fast in the car market right now, almost daily and monthly for sure. Trade in numbers are dropping like a rock, or should I say back where they should be in the first place, and car lots are starting to fill. I know Toyota is still short inventory but that won't last forever.

I’m not sure about that. I “ordered” three trucks before I got what I wanted. A Tacoma and then two tundras. Each came exactly as I spec’d. Ultimately didn’t buy the Tacoma because it was a Tacoma and not big enough. And the first Tundra was loaded with chrome as I didn’t understand the limited packages.

But again, I picked each option I wanted on each truck, dealer ordered it which he told me was indeed an allocation, but I highly doubt I happened to order an exact match to what the manufacturer was already going to send 3x in a row.

I think you picked combinations that happened to be available in your region and the configuring tool would not have allowed you to build ones that weren't.

Why can't I configure a vehicle with the equipment I want using the Build a Toyota feature?
The Build a Toyota feature on our website is regionally based and is designed to identify vehicles commonly available in your area. The information is not necessarily indicative of all the option package combinations that are available through your local Toyota dealership. Additionally, not all options/packages are available in all regions of the country.

Our vehicles are generally equipped with options and model grades that we have found to be popular in the geographic area in which they are marketed. We do extensive market surveys and studies to assist in forecasting product features and equipment that will be desirable to the consumer.

You can make bolt on upgrades and options part of the deal and negotiate to have the dealer install them. Things like TRD dual exhaust, running boards, dash cam, TRD skid plate, TRD wheels, OR wheel flares and grille are a few examples. Im not sure what comes in TRD sport premium package but you may be able to get some of those features added at dealer or install yourself. Most appearance parts can be added with minimal skill. Heated and cooled seats would need to come from the factory. I had to do this with mine to get the combination I wanted. I bought a limited and am adding TRD OR parts to get the look of the TRD OR package. It was easier and faster than waiting for the perfect allotment to pop up at a dealer. I waited 10 months then decided to buy the factory optioned truck for the color and critical options I wanted and add the rest. Good luck with your purchase.
