Wanting to pick you guys’/gals’ brains on the sound of my exhaust. 2017 TRD Pro, factory exhaust. For as long as I can remember at idle I’ve had what I’d expect, a low rumbly sound. BUT in addition to the low rumble there’s almost like a puffing-ish noise, also kind of sounds like “chugging” along. The truck runs like a top, has been well maintained, and been to the dealer frequently for oil changes, etc (not that they’re the most observant people in the world) and they’ve never mentioned any potential issues. I always just assumed the noise was normal but yesterday a buddy of mine commented on it so now I’m wondering. I’m going to try to attach a video of it at idle.
    Thoughts?

Does not seem normal, and ive never seen my tailpipe shake like that. Missfire? Scan and see if you have any codes perhaps.

I wouldn’t be too concerned. I also have the TRD duals and occasionally notice some strange tones and resonances out of it at idle aside from the deep rumble, but it doesn’t annoy me. I think that is the sound many refer to as the “helicopter drone” out of the TRD duals. Mine doesn’t sound quite like that, but I doubt it’s anything to worry about. I think it’s just related to the exhaust pulses on each bank, seeing as it’s a true dual system and the two banks do not equalize.

I wonder if the Secondary Air Injection System is running when you notice this and pushing additional air through the pipes...

Mine would make that puffing sound when cold/high idle, but the puffing sound went away once warmed up.

Same. I actually noticed it this morning when I started up my truck and was attaching the trailer, I looked down at my tailpipe and thought “well that’s weird.”

I drove it around all day with frequent starts and stops, didn’t notice it doing it after that one cold start in the morning.

Did you ever find out what was causing this? I have same exact sound on my 2017 tundra with TRD dual exhaust. The sound only comes from the drivers side exhaust tip. The passenger side exhaust sounds normal.

Its the lack of a crossover essentially. These true dual systems sound great but you will hear a difference in scavenging between the banks. A lot of guys mention this as a "helicopter" sound while driving and in park it sounds more like a puff. Personally, the loss of low end power was the thing that annoyed me the most about this system and I went back to stock.

Dirty Deeds systems maintain the factory profile of a dual inlet/single outlet and has a killer sound that is bolt on. I would give them a shout and see what kind of deal they have running.

I called and spoke to Keith when I ordered my exhaust. He explained in detail why a regular truck does not need dual exhaust. He explained how the one outlet exhaust he sells maintains proper back pressure, eliminates the "bogging down" some other systems have, etc.
Now if you have a supercharger, long tube headers, remove the cats he has a dual exhaust system that will rock your world.
For my truck the best option was the single outlet that was on sale when I ordered it.
I just put in on this weekend. It sounds GREAT!!

The resonator eliminates all of the drone. I do not know how it works. But I drove it with just the new muffler section on it and it droned. I put the resonator on it, that came with the muffler section. Boom. No more drone.

Cold start sound is an awesome growl.
Idle is a great womp, womp, womp sound.
Acceleration is a wonderful bah, bah, bah, bah tune I have played repeatedly this weekend driving up and down the road.
I have read that the longer it is on the truck the more "seasoned" the sound becomes.
