'22 Plat here. Wondering if anyone else has experienced engine stuttering or stalling when placing their Tundra in park. Mine stutters pretty much any time i place it in park, like its going to stall out, then idles normal. Occasionally it stalls out completely and shows on the dash auto-stop activated on dash, only to restart a couple seconds later.

    Anyone else have this happening?

Yes and no. I’ve turned off the auto stop and start feature and this has went away completely. Beforehand, if placing truck in park with foot firmly in brake. And within a split second having unbuckled my seatbelts, the truck would seem to partially start the auto off feature then start the truck again.

Not sure if this is what you’re experiencing but might be worth a try to see if your truck acts the same way with auto on/off disabled just to test it out a bit.

This has been discussed a few times on the forum. It seems fairly common and happened to me frequently when I first got my truck.

When you come to a complete stop (let's say parking on your driveway), in that 1-1.5 seconds between you stopping & shifting into park, the truck doesn't know if you're stopped at a stoplight or parked & about to turn off the vehicle. For some reason, if the auto stop is engaged...the truck's software automatically restarts the engine when it detects the transmission shifting (I.E. from Drive to Park).

Hopefully, they'll release a software update that will fix this one day. I think they could solve it if they delayed engaging the auto start/stop by 1 or 2 seconds OR keep the auto stop engaged if shifting into park.

Here was my experience & self "solution": I found myself mashing the brake when I know I needed to be stopped for awhile. I.E. Like when parking. It was a different behavior than when I was stopping for a short period of time, like at a stoplight. I now just stop myself from mashing the brake as hard to prevent the auto start/stop from trying to engage. The truck doesn't does wig out as much.

Thanks for the info. I have a light foot on the brake pedal so when coming up to stop lights auto-stop doesn't kick in, rather it shows in the dash display to press harder to engage it.
I'll try turning it off and seeing if the truck behaves differently when parking it tonight. Agreed, they should update the software to address this issue. It's unneccesary wear on the starter and gets odd reactions from people driving with me when it stutters.

Mine has kind of a rough idle when parked. I'd say 80% of the time it's idling fine, but sometimes it gets a little rough for a moment here and there. Like it's at the bleeding edge of sipping fuel, just 1% above running rough, and has trouble maintaining that sweet spot.

I found that if park is engaged right away after auto stop kills the engine, the engine will fire back up. If I wait a couple of seconds before shifting to park, the engine will stay off. I guess maybe it’s in case you’re actually shifting to reverse instead of park?

Mine does this. I have been trying different things to see if I get changes in behavior. I've noticed if I shift into P slower it does it less than if I just push the gearshift forward more deliberately. I've never had it do it when backing in my driveway and stopping so clearly it is the start/stop feature being confused on what is happening. Hope they have an update for it.

This is how I'd describe the experience with mine. Occasionally acts as though it's about to install, but recovers fine. May be more likely to do so on an incline as well.

I turned off auto stop/start with the button and also found the problem goes away, which tells me it's related to the auto stop/start. Based on that that i'd hope Toyota would fix this with a software update as mentioned by kroppduster above.

I disable stop/start before every drive, so unfortunately I can't attribute it to that.

Mine does this and it is super aggravating. Wants to try and idle around 600 rpm or something and then finally revs up a little more to smooth out. Are you still having this issue?

I’ve been having this happen too. When I put in park it idles down shuts off then starts again every time. I do use the start stop option, my truck was at the dealer and they fixed the latest recall with the parking brake and that seems to have fixed the the issues. When I put in park the idle doesn’t flutter it stays steady like it should, they never said anything about doing more work then the recall.

I recently had the recalls performed as well. For 1 week, the truck did not die/restart when putting it in park. 3 days ago, died when shifting to park, and it’s done it almost every time since then.

After the recalls, the idle rpm seemed a little higher and consistent.

Ive noticed that if I apply a light brake to stop the truck, shift into park, and then increase pressure to a heavy brake then the engine shuts off and stays off after its already in park. It will remain off if I press the ignition prior to releasing the brake. If I release the brake and it starts again, I cannot get it to auto stop again regardless of what is done to the brake. Not sure it's an intentional feature or a funny quirk

Today the head unit was having trouble connecting to my phone and the car felt like it almost stalled out. I shut it off and restarted and the gauge cluster defaulted back to the eco display rather than what I had it set on.

also, my auto off function isn’t engaging because it says that it is charging the battery. That concerns me.

My wife’s BMW does very similar things with the auto start/stop when. I can’t stand it, it is horrible. It seems most manufacturers are too aggressive with this feature, which causes the engine to shut off prematurely. It is ridiculous to think owners/drivers are having to figure out brake pressure in different scenarios to obtain a smooth transition.

Of all the vehicles I’ve been in with ASS, my 2021 Ram (5.7 w/ etorque) is the most seamless. I have a button to turn it off, and have never once done so.

I’ve been entertaining the idea of getting a 3G Pro, but after reading this thread, I would definitely want to test drive one first. There’s no way I could handle it if it’s anything like my wife’s car.

you can definitely turn it off. You just have to do it every time you turn on the truck. It doesn’t save your setting.

Yeah, I just edited my post (I didn’t realize there was a button in the Tundra). I wish my wife’s BMW did

Mine too. I only seem to notice it in my driveway though. Maybe because I'm on the brake more due to the slope?

To turn auto stop start off on a bmw the button it beside the ignition button and it will stay off if you want there’s a solid light the stays on. Here is a pic of both bmw and tundra auto start stop off buttons.

Regarding the BMW, not the case in the new G20 platform, trust me, we are on our 2nd one.

My wife’s last BMW (330i) had a button to turn it off; however, the m340i does not have a button anymore.

2019 BMW 330i button location was next to shifter

    2022 m340i (no more button)

Also, upon more digging, the TRD Pro (and I presume all iForce Max trims) doesn’t have a button to turn it off either. From looking at pictures, instead of the ASS button, the TRD Pro has a fuel door button:

Any one solve this? Mine floats around 500 and bounces up to the 700 rpm , and just feels like it’s struggling to stay on. This is the first vehicle I have seen not be rock solid in a idle state even my 2016 diesel Mercedies is still like a rock. Seems to be a ton of electric or airflow issues with this model and dealerships are struggling to help me figure it out.

Which issue are you referring to? Rough idle or shutting off and then turning back on when shifting into park?

rough idle, I still see it. Shutting off briefly when parking, not so sure. I’ve either gotten used to it and don’t notice it anymore or it doesn’t actually do it as much. I’ll try to pay attention this week.

Yes. ‘23 Limited non-Hy does the same. Hopefully some day SOON Toyota will slow down the Start Stop from jumping in so quickly shifting to Park. (I’ll be reporting this problem at my first maintenance visit) Without messing with the S/S button I either wait a few seconds after I stop before shifting to Park -or- shift to neutral for a few seconds then to park. It doesn’t shut down then. Rough idle, I see/feel that sometimes too. Just sitting there in Park, no AC on, at times it seems the idle is just a tad low after it’s fully warmed up.

So you can't turn auto stop/start off on the hybrid? That sucks. It's the first thing I shut off every time I start my non-hybrid. Such a dumb and problematic feature.

Yeah but for a 70k truck, you would figure they would have the option to just completely shut if off. in my wife's Volvo we can completely shut it off permanently.
