Is it a good idea to wait getting a 2015 5.7 Tundra for the 2016?

    Trifold thing
Since it apparently comes with a diesel engine?

Also does anyone know when the 16s are available?

Diesel has not been made unless you do a conversion to the tundra and get a import v8 diesel.

My understanding for now 2016 has be pushed back for now. Problem I see toyota is using the cummings diesel engine. If I wanted a cummings engine I would go buy a dodge not a toyota.

Cummings are crap engines and better powerplants out there on the market. Hino(toyota) and isuzu (duramax/gm) diesels along with navistar( International) makes some on the best diesel for small truck market.

Toyota was smart which I think they are in this case pushing back to diesel for now. Other problem is the EPA as got heavy involved with diesel exhaust (ppm and sulfer) and has come down on them very very hard. I think new rules for 2018 are in place I believe.

Nissan is lauching theres on time 2016. nissan and toyota will use the same powerplant cummings engine for now. Marketing would have serious problems with this I think one of the real reasons its not coming in 2016. How can you market your competition
If you have the same powerplant you cant. Its just like the commercials for gmc and chevy they never attack each other because its the same truck.

I disagree with Mike on the Cummins. I think they have built awesome engines for a long time. Do I like dodge? No, not a Chrysler fan. But Cummins is a whole different company that has built a great brand and reputation. I wouldn't mind seeing a Cummins in a Tundra. As far as your question goes, I probably wouldn't wait. Who knows when this trigger will get pulled or even if it will. Get a 5.7 and just don't look at the MPG screen.

Reason they are are called cum a part engines in the industry. Good luck with the china parts as cummings as moved some stuff to china. Injectors suck in cummings badly. Unfortunately pass 19 years I have been on and off around cummings, cat, Detroit diesel, navistar, hino and Mitsubishi to name a few.

last company I worked for got suckered into the cummings powerplant only to find out they are not worth it and went to Detroit diesel (gm).

Hino diesel hands down. Hell, ISIS probably prefers Hino powerplants. Can you imagine a Sierra owner telling a Silverado owner his truck is crap? Yes.

To each our own... Got a buddy with an 2001 Dodge 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins. Thing is a beast and has 300,000 miles on it and runs like new. And is there a reason your saying cummings instead of cummins?

I think the Cummins is built well, but I'm also not one to make a change to diesel as I would have no need for a diesel.

We will have to see how the Cummins fares with the new Titan HD unfortunately.

Good go buy a dodge! funny 410,000 miles on my 22r toyota runs like a top your point is invalid. Cummings is because then they break down they see you coming..

Edit cummins are also cheap diesel power compared to other makes. You get what you pay for.

When cummins beats navistars 7.3 in the ford trucks wake me up millon mile engines easy... im going back to sleep on the subject.

^^^Whoa chill out man! So because I like Cummins I need to go buy a Dodge? Your very opinionated on this subject. My guess would be you have no actual experience with Cummins and your going all off of hear say. I'm glad your Toyota has 410,000 miles on it but telling me that is not going to validate your point that Cummins sucks. Remember, I own a Tundra too.. And I think calling it Cummings is stupid... When they break down they see you coming??? Lame.

Where is the diesel? Why are Tundra's/Tacoma' the last trucks on Earth to get diesel's (like the rest of the planet?) Ford,Dodge, and Chebby figured out EPA crapola. And when do we get a real Limited slip/locker option? Something usually desired in a 4X4 truck for those that actually take their Tundra 4X4 off the road. I'm just messing with you. (was hoping you might know something we don't yet) heh heh

From what the Toyota reps. have told me, the issue with entering the diesel market is a matter of market share. With Toyota already being a small fish in the truck market pond it wouldn't make sence to enter an even smaller pond (the diesel market) and they did make a diesel prototype back in 2008 nut it was destroyed in the tsunami in Japan. But I'm sure you guys have already seen this

Cool. I've heard mention of that truck but had never seen a pic. Will find out soon enough if Nissan messed up testing the market with it's XD. I've seen the the XD on the cover of almost every truck oriented magazine on the rack at B&N. Nothing about Toyota's future plans other than the Tacoma with it's new engine which won't help Chevy at all.(like it matters anyways, heh heh)

    Honestly.

Our current infrastructure for transport and storage of fuels, diesel fuel is non existing to handle the load for mass diesel movement at this time. Till we change that we will never see more diesel power over here.. till more fuel stations have diesel fuel at the pump we are spinning our wheels. Dont get me started on epa on diesel I will be banned permanently.

You must have infrastructure first, or the product doesnt get to market. That goes for anything not just fuel.

I vote getting the 15' 5.7l. 5.7 w/ 6 speed has a solid reputation of performance and reliability. With the new trucks you get the benefit of the proven drivetrain with a re-designed look inside and out.

Even if they came out with something newer/better there is a risk to being the first model year. If HP/TQ/load & tow capacity isn't enough you probably should spring for a 3/4 ton. If we get a next gen engine with direct injection or cylinder deactivation is that really going to be worth the wait? Would you want a smaller turbo charged engine on your truck?

On the transmission I came from a 4 speed 03, 6 gears is plenty for me and I can't imagine shifting 8 or 10 gears all the time. All this bull about MPG. Talk to people real world, truck owners over 5.0l are getting 11-17 depending on routes and driving habits, we're right there and ours drives nicer - personal opinion I would image a few here agree.

No one knows but if we are tossing guesses, I'm guessing it's the same drivetrain options for 2016. 2017-2018 would probably have a new engine/transmission. I don't see the diesel option unless the Titan does well as stated above. I know many go on about how cool it would be to have a diesel, but how many current Tundra owners will really pay more up front for diesel and more in maintenance for diesel.

I'll take my "1/2 ton" gas 6 speed with almost 400 hp, well, over 500 she's supercharged :)

    I'm happy with my 15.

My 07 is the first model year. If anything, you would think that Toyota, or any mfr for that matter, would want to have a good roll out for their new "flagship" truck. Which Toyota did in 07. The 07 Tundra woke up the big three as far as tow capacity, torque, power,drivetrain,10.5", 4.3 gear rear end, etc. Toyota made virtually no changes to the Tundra until 14 and that was sheet metal. What risk? Nothing changed for 8 years. Nissan made no changes to the Titan for 15 years. Toyota historically is slow to change or not at all. Toyota always has a different way about business. Innovative? Yes. (sometimes, but not with 14 model) Change. No. ie=Diesel... Although I saw a lot of Tundras and Tacomas in Anchorage, by far the vast majority of work trucks were diesel, diesel, diesel.Hands down. North Slope=99.9% diesel. Diesel trucks, diesel generators, diesel power equipment, diesel heavy equipment. Same in in North/South Dakota. BC and Alberta CA the same. Toyota doesn't NEED a diesel. Like you said the 5.7L has 400+ lbs-ft torque stock. Plenty for us. When you need raw power you go diesel. 800 lbs-ft of torque gets the job done every time.

    Hi Aaron,

So are we going to see a Cummins in 2016? Been a waiting a few months to purchase another Tundra with the news of the Cummins. Loved my 07 5.7 Tundra but was stolen recently in home burglary.

This isn't for me, but I'm telling you it's not going to happen man...I think they'll wait to see how the Titan does and go from there.

Thanks Sean. How are you getting the info? Someone on the inside? I will get another 5.7 but don't want to make a stupid mistake if it does come out. Loved the truck but the 5.7 mileage sucked. Would be perfect to get low to mid 20's with the CTD.

I agree with Sean. Toyota is selling every Tundra it makes right now, mostly without any incentives and to put diesels in them would mean investing in another assembly line and then they have to ask what would the gain be investment dollar per dollar made. The Big 3 build so many of them that you can almost name your price just so they can say they're in the hunt to sell the most pickups every year, I think Toyota realized that years ago and spent it's money elsewhere.

Salesmen can be a good source. "Can be". There are numerous truck magazines, all of which want to spill any beans. The major auto shows are one of the best indicators of what direction a automotive mfr is taking for the oncoming year. Lastly, Rumors. There were no Tundra diesels or new gas motors at any of the major auto shows this year, salesmen at my dealer said "no diesel" for 2016, and zero articles in any of the major auto magazines and their forums/blogs. Lastly, no rumors coming from any "reliable" sources other than hearsay.

I think one of the big issues with Toyota going diesel in this country is the fact that they have no trained dealership workforce to repair them. Since their entire fleet is gas, it would take a lot of time/investment in getting mechs up to speed and certified to do any warranty work.

I'd love to one day have a diesel Tundra, but Toyota can kiss four-quarters of my ass if they don't bring back green paint! Okay, okay, I'm not quite this pissy about it , but I had been planning on buying a '14 until I learned at the last minute they were discontinuing green as an option, which is why I snagged a '13.
