Tailgate delete - PVM and backup camera options

I need to remove my tailgate to fit a slide-in camper. I would like to find a backup camera that can be mounted on the rear of the camper and will plug and play with the Tundra's integrated camera system. Compatibility with the Tundra's PVM system would be a bonus but not necessary. Has anyone found something that works on their 2022 yet?

As a note, I contacted camerasource.com and they haven't started developing a camera that is compatible with the 2022 Tundra. However, they did ask for picture of the connectors to see if they previous gen camera would work. I'll try to send them photos soon.

 

You could try to use the camera that is already in your tailgate.
Get it off of it and find a way to mount it to the camper.
If you mount it roughly in the same position/height I would think that the PVM would still work.

 

If you remove your tailgate. Will it not set the sensor off showing it is ot close. I remember reading in here somewhere that someone was complaining about just leaving the tailgate down was doing that.

 

License plate backup camera maybe?

I'll be in the same boat when I get around to mounting our camper. Checking compatibility with my camper camera and harness from the 2020 Tundra is on my to do list. I'll try to check that this week if I get around to it. The camera and harness are both from Camera Source.

 

It would be a matter of trying the PVM with the gate open.
And figuring out what type of sensor and how it gets triggered.

 

Adding to this, I think it would be a great idea to figure this out using the OEM camera because that would open the possibility to use the upgraded digital rear view mirror even while driving.

 

Has anyone found an extended backup camera wire for the 2022 yet?

I cut and remove the camera from the tailgate with the plug. I did the same to the plug under the bed and added a 5 wire extension in between. However, the camera will still not turn on once when put into reverse.

I've tried 3 type of wires, but still no luck.

I thought the camera was damaged so I removed the extension and plug the camera directly to the plug under the bed, the camera works again.

My guess is that this camera cannot use any sort of wires to extend the length to be relocated.

Please let me know your thoughts.

 

Just guessing here but possibly the extension too long. The system is not getting fast enough response maybe?

 

Possibly... One of the 3 wires I tried was a 1 foot cable.

Emailed a few companies about this since my PVM doesn’t work anymore with the topper installed, waiting to hear back but doesn’t sound good so far

 

Look forward to an update but I had feeling it would be a long wait for someone to come up with a solution (if one exists).

 

if anyone feels sporty drop the headliner and see what the camera connectors look like- take some pics. We might get lucky and it could be universal and we can use ford or Chevy harness extensions… or we might get super lucky and toyota left 3-10ft or extra wiring in there we can snake through and grommet!

 

Camera Source confirmed that they don’t have anything currently that will work. They say the wiring is completely different in the 2022 and sourcing the parts is difficult.

This is not a back up camera but more of a replacement for your rear view mirror. I hardwired it and so it acts like a security camera. I am still looking for a true back up camera replacement.

I would just order a tailgate harness and use it. I think it would be long enough to get the camera somewhere decent

not the cheapest. But also, it would likely work

 

I am looking into the possibility of buying an OEM backup camera and mounting it to the back of the camper.

I think I’ve identified the group of parts that I would need but I’m having a difficult time deciphering the toyota parts catalogue.


I can’t tell the difference between 867B0-0C070 and 86790-0C290. Do I need both? I was thinking that I just need 86790-0C290 since I have the PVM system but it really changes things if I have to get both to make this plan work.

I know @Roman is out of the parts game but I figured it’s worth a shot mentioning him to see if he has thoughts on this.

 

0C070 is the non-PVM camera. 0C290 is the PVM camera.

The wiring/connectors are going to prove to be a larger hurdle, I imagine.

 

I think you're right about the wiring/connectors being the most difficult part based on what I heard back from camerasource a few months ago. They said they currently can't source the connectors and have no idea when that will change.

 

Did you figure this out? Looks to me like the camera cable has a ground shield. youll need to carry that through the entire cable as-well. Try connecting that and see if it works

 

I believe that is the case too. I worked with cable assembly frequently in my previous work, and RF & Video cables use bare copper to shield from interference + ground.

What about leaving the camera and wires intact when removing the tailgate? Then mount the camera on the camper shell roughly just off the camper door?

Definitely something I’m looking into. I was hoping someone else would do it first since my spray on bed liner is sprayed over the bolts converting the tailgate wiring. I’ll update if go down that road.

 

Has anyone figured this out? Camera Source doesn't have them yet and neither does Tailgatecamera.com (where I got mine for my old Tacoma). I'm going to attempt removing the camera from the tailgate and mount it to the camper. Will keep everyone posted.

 

This is as far as I’ve gotten to removing the camera from the tailgate for relocating on the camper. Lots of wires so I stopped! That’s the end of the wire for the camera. Definitely different than the Tacoma. There’s also another camera looking thing in the tailgate handle. Anyone know what that is?
