What kind of camper do you have???

I've seen a lot of recommendations to tow in S4. I just did a 5 hour tow from southern to northern Utah. I've found that S4 puts the tach around 2700 at 60mph and around 3000 at 66-67mph. I did alot of this drive in S4 between 60-65mph as I used rural highways instead of I-15 for over half of the distance. I tried using S5 where I could, but the highways are generally hilly and I couldn't hold TC lockup in 5th on any real incline, and I found myself force shifting to 4th to get back into lockup. Once on I-15, it was easier to hold 5th in lockup at 70mph.

My question is this: how hard is it on the engine to hold 2800-3000 for several hours straight? I know higher revs help the trans as it limits shifting and keeps the TC in lockup, but how does that running affect a 5.7? Piston rings, bearings, timing chain, valvetrain, etc are they built for prolonged mid-rpm running? Obviously, the engine can do it, but at the cost of additional wear?

I found that the engine roar actually quieted some at exactly 65mph, just under 3000rpm, so I spent a long part of the drive there.

Not specific to the 5.7 but I've been told about 4000 rpm is generally about the max you want to run for a prolonged period of time.

 

Boat outboards will run 4,000 rpm for hours and hours.

 

I'll keep that it mind if I'm using my boat to tow my trailer.

 

A 5.7 is just a pair of 2.8 four bangers sharing a crank.

Towed it for 6 years with my 4.7 '00 1st gen, just got the '19 and going camping in a couple weeks.

 

Looks like a nice little set up. You planning to add a transmission cooler to your '19, or did you already?

 

Thanks, we love it. It's pretty comfy, and has been remarkably trouble free.

Haven't added one yet, I didn't realize they'd deleted the cooler till after I'd bought it. ('Cuz why the hell would they do THAT?!) I do question the wisdom of that move a little, but I figure most of the engineers at Toyota are smarter than me.

I'll probably get an OBD dongle to monitor temps for a few trips towing before I decide whether or not to add one, curious what adding one does to the warranty.
Maybe just change the ATF more often.
My trailer's only about 5,500 lbs wet and loaded so the truck and trans won't be working too hard.

 

Just came back from the last trip of the season, we loved every trip with this thing, can't wait for the next season.

Why is this the last trip? The good camping season is just getting started here.

 

Gets pretty cold, lots of snow, and most provincial parks are closed unless you want to camp on crown land (like BLM), but then unless I put tracks on the truck it won't make to most spots.

it was a beautiful spot, nothing like desert scenery, hopefully next year/2024 can make the big west coast trip.

With these views as our front yard, sitting there with a cup of good coffee and smellin' the bacon cooking, it doesn't get much better.

 

How much does your trailer weigh? How did the 00 pull it?

I carry my Rock A Bye bye camper builder out of Casa Grande AZ .. its dry camper and sitting on my 08-LB-SC. WIll post pict later

 

GVWR is 5,500 lbs. and I'm probably pretty close to that most trips.

The '00 w/4.7 did very well, a little slow up some grades but that was due more to gearing than lack of power.

I tend to drive more by the tach than the speedo when towing, and with OD off there's certain grades that it can't quite hold 3rd at the speed I'd like, but 2nd revs too high, so I just downshift and slow down.

Other than that it was a pretty well matched combo, very stable and uneventful.

 

Yep, only difference is trying to hold 4th with a 6 speed here.

I like it when I get on the just right grade with the TC locked in 4th and let torque and horsepower do the work. I find mine will go up to at least 59% throttle without unlocking if I can keep it around 60mph.

 

Glad to hear! Just bought a 21’ at 3000lbs dry. Have some 4.88’s I’m gonna slap in and shouldn’t even feel it back there!

 

I'm looking forward to the difference between having a very adequate tow vehicle and a towing beast.

From 315 Ft/lbs to 401
From 3:91's to 4:30's
From 3 usable gears to 4 (Maybe 5 on flats)
From undersized disc/drum brakes to proper 4 wheel disc

The '00 never failed me in 6 years, did it's job well, and didn't mind being beat on a little after we set up camp.









But the '19 is gonna' make my life a bit easier I'm sure.

 

Oh yeah, you're golden. Use them 4:88's for engine braking on the downhills for sure...

My only knock on the '00 is that they're a little underbraked IMHO.

What kind of trailer did you get? Pictures man, we like pitchers!

 

Made this exact transition myself (kept the FGT) and have enjoyed towing with the ‘19. The thing you left out is the additional tow vehicle weight. Feels very stable and capable compared to my 2000. I tow in S4 and haven’t monitored trans temps. If I was towing any real distance, I would probably add the trans cooler. My longest runs are an hour or 2 here to some state parks.

 

Agree on the brakes and I plan on a rear disc conversion and gx460 brakes up front. Should be a huge improvement in braking.

Good point on the extra weight. My '00 always felt very stable, I'm sure some of that from the Andersen WDH... they may not transfer as much weight as traditional spring bar systems, but they're known for having very effective sway control.

Yeah, with both wifey and I still working FT, most of our trips are the same as yours. Rarely more than 200 miles round trip. Had the trailer 6 years next month and it has less then 7K miles
Fortunately living in San Diego we have a gold mine of good camping close to home... beach, mountains, desert, even some pretty good boondocking. And other than avoiding the desert in the summer, no off season to worry about.
