Supercharged 5.7L or add a WRX to the fleet?

So, should I SC the Tundra or get a fun little MT daily driver? Leaning mostly toward the WRX, although the new GR Corolla looks awesome.

WRX Pros:
I would pay cash.
Insurance is cheap, and putting a plate on any passenger vehicle in TN is like $90.
It is glued to the road at nearly all times and all g-forces.

WRX Cons:
Finding one that hasn’t been ridden hard is probably an exercise in futility. This might force a new purchase.
Maintenance/upkeep will probably keep me busy.
Premium recommended, which I would do.

SC Pros:
No need to add a vehicle to the fleet.
Would be really fun to drive, obviously.

SC Cons:
Adding a supercharger does not change the fact that it will handle like a truck.
Premium fuel required.
Accelerated maintenance schedule.

Personally I'm not a fan of WRXs, basic bitch vibes. But to add to your pros and cons, the WRX by comparison will get insane mpg (assuming you don't have a daily already). The supercharger I wouldn't say accelerates your maintenance schedule, but I guess that depends on what your schedule is already--I would say there is MORE maintenance, but it's somewhat trivial and mostly dependent on the power level and supporting mods you're interested in. If all you have is the Tundra then there is the advantage of having a backup vehicle, and the fun of having options of what to take. The WRX has massive aftermarket support and can probably easily and much more cheaply be built to outrun the Tundra. A supercharger will make it faster than 99% of the things on the road, but it'll still be the slowest fast thing.

I think the GR Corolla looks awesome too, or look at other vehicles. I like having unique vehicles and making them fast, something like a WRX and honestly even the GR Corolla (albeit less so) doesn't turn me on since they don't seem that special. If you said building a Lexus or something else I'd vote for that.

 

Funny you mention that…this whole thought process was started by seeing a supercharged 2003 Lexus IS 300 on Bring a Trailer. It had sold for FAR less than I thought it would have gone for.

Yes, the WRX is basic. But I would go base model and build it out how I want it.

Still, an AWD Lexus sedan would be more fun to build I think.

 

I today's market I'd lean towards the WRX, even though a SC'd Tundra is on my wants list.

That was almost identical to what I was thinking. The IS300 has a 2JZ so you can get massive power out of it, that's actually the exact engine I have in my Hilux build.

 

What year WRX would you get?

I'd definitely go WRX. I miss mine, and if two vehicles were in the cards again I'd be hunting hard for another 2017. That 2.0 was sweet, and as long as you don't plan to go aggressive with power mods (totally unnecessary) it's reliable, too!

 

The most fun i've ever had on 4 wheels was an s2k, but a close 2nd was a bone stock yaris with stiffer springs and fat tires. Slow car fast. Plus, it got 40mpg, was quiet while being abused, and cheap.

3rd was my buddies '00 civic si auto-x car, but it was tempermental, and had lots of expensive fragile parts.

 

Probably a few years old, not too many miles.

But man, the right MT Lexus IS would be awesome.

Whatever you go with has to have a manual. My first choice would be the GR Corolla and my second would be the Lexus IS.

 

I had a new base model 2015 WRX with manual transmission, it was awesome, added muffler deletes and it snapped, crackled and popped so cool. I took it to the tail of the dragon and it was the most intense driving of my lifetime, I pushed it the entire length on the edge of death Lol.

 

I use my stock Tundra for fun Truck stuff, and this when I feel suicidal.

 

If money is zero issue, wrx. SC tundra has the old school goes way too fast for its size thing going on which makes it unique.
Nothing is as fun a dirt bike though and no one will convince me otherwise
