Posted earlier in the thread, but since you asked:

This is Lefty, he’s 3.5 years old. If you’ve researched the breed, they mean everything they say. The term “velco dog” is very accurate, they want to be with their people, and their people to be all together.

Very high exercise requirements, but he’s learned to like the occasional “cuddle with a struggle” as a lap dog too.

We rescued one back in NH but he was not true Heeler, more Cattle dog and he Loved my wife and constantly "herded the Grand Children"...

Lost him to chronic seizures that even the med's couldn't help..:(

Empty nester's for 9+ years now... Time to Spoil another 4 legged child ;)

This hurricane NONSENSE gets by us this week and I'll be stepping up to bring one home

Because a 10yr old German Shepard and a 3yr old Belgian Malinois didn't keep us busy enough, we are fostering to adopt a 1 yr old Dutch Shepard. He was left abandoned, tied to a post at hunt club and ended up with the same rescue where we got our Belgain. He's fitting right in with the family, but I've lost my spot on the couch

Smartest dumbest grumpy old man toddler I've ever known...he's 6.5, has cost me money, has made me money, acts like a 2 year old human throwing a tantrum ...and I love him to death

If youve got a Mal, the Dutchie will be about the same training wise...

…the only thing I'll add to that is that (depending on the blood lines for the specific animal), most DSs can be even more hard-headed/stern than the Malinois; particularly if they possess a fair/high amount of 'rank' drive within their bloodline. This will generally manifest and peak between 18-30 months in a male, and once they acclimated to their environment, if they are driven that way.

I wouldn't trade the experiences I've had in working with either of those breeds over the years…

    Enjoy your new pup!!!!

Thanks guys. Since he's an abandoned rescue we have no clue on his bloodline. But he has quickly bonded with me and has shown some protective tendencies against the girls that we'll have to work on.

Poor guy had a rough day yesterday. He got snipped and had a lower canine that was broken at the gum line extracted. His bloodwork came back a little wonky probably due to malnourishment and to top it all off..he tested positive for heartworm. I'll probably be visiting the Vet thread soon too.

Definitely not a great day for him at all, and now he's part of lampshade nation!!! I hope he gets to feeling better soon! I'm kinda surprised they did surgery on him w/heartworm as that's a lot of stress on his system when he's already sick… :(

Regarding the 'protective tendencies against the girls'… sounds like you have some good dog experience to fall back on and you may not even be asking for any advice on this; if so let me (us) know, and I'll shut up

However, if you are wanting some input on it, please PM me and I'd be happy to offer whatever help I can. With that being said, my apologies for not knowing you family structure, so I was just going to ask you a couple of quick questions so I have a clearer picture... When you say 'against the girls' are you referring to your children or other female dogs within the household? Also, when you say protective tendencies, is he protecting area/possessions against them (the girls) approaching or trying to take, or is he being protective on their behalf for a perceived threat toward them??

Finally, another thing you'll find w/Dutch Shepherds, is that in addition to high levels of 'rank' drive, their awareness, enforcement, and manipulation of the pack structure (the structure of all things living in your home and all living things that enter or encroach that area). These two drive (or behavior make ups as some refer to) really go hand in hand.

You say he's already bonding to you, which means he's clearly identified you as the dominant entity within the pack. He sees you as the pack leader, and his natural instinct will be to assume the #2 role (that of the 'enforcer/protector') within the pack. Generally these dogs are truly 'one person' dogs, which doesn't mean that he won't interact, play, protect and have fun w/others in the pack; but does mean there will be a high propensity for him to truly only be obedient and submissive to you. He may follow commands from others within the pack out of respect for you, but he may not necessarily perceive his standing to 'require' him to be submissive to them.

*** I say this in reference to what the breed will traditionally exhibit if the blood lines are strong charactered and exemplify true DS history *** …he may not even be wired this way, but I'm just offering this information to provide some background and a basis for you to understand what you're seeing if these drives and behaviors start to manifest.

Hopefully, with your other pups in the mix, he'll learn what appropriate behavior in your household looks like and he'll fall in place without too much difficulty. But, in the meantime just keep an eye on things and be prepared to intervene (not overreact) once he's feeling better and starts to gain his health back.

@tripleconpanna - That is all great information! Thank you so much.

All of his medical is being handled through the Rescue that works with local clinics. The neuter, tooth extraction, heartworm test, vaccinations etc were all scheduled for one open time slot. Is what it is.

"The girls" I'm referring to are our 10yr old German Shepard and 3 yr Belgian Mal. Most of the time he's damn near enamored with my Belgian and civil with the old gal GSD.
He sticks to me like glue, even while half drugged and flopping his lamp shade around. He's gotten aggressive with the GSD a couple times when she approached while sitting on the couch with him, or when she got too close to "his" new bed (I was sitting next to him and the bed). This morning the Mal triggered a similar response when she wanted pets on the couch. He hasn't been food or toy protective yet. So far its just been with me and maybe the bed (but I could have still been the common denominator there too).

The next year is going to fun with the Heartworm treatment. Where's the handbook on keeping a 1 yr old Dutchie chill for 12 months so that he doesn't embolize chunks of disintegrating heartworms :eek2:

My dogs aren't allowed in the kitchen during dinner. My mom's great dane sits next to her at the dinner table with her head practically on my mom's plate drooling. Makes me mental. Needless to say we don't eat there much. She's grown since this picture, but still smaller than her 175lb mom and 210lb dad.

Yeah....European Danes are more proportional to regular dogs (not as lanky like American Danes). According to my mom there was another older Dane there that was even bigger than Callie's 210lb father.

The breeder takes back any Danes that she sells that need a home. Apparently there were about 8 adult Danes there when my mom went to get her runt. I can only imagine the food bill.
