    @TXRailRoadBandit73
Had an ACL injury while surfing a year ago almost to the day, was a small tear, nothing bad, but hurt like hell and just walking felt like exactly as you describe (buckling backwards) . My case was FAR from needing surgery, though I was told to strengthen both my knees or face another injury like it or worse.

Two months recovery, 5 months therapy. Things are finally getting back to normal but sadly will never be the same. I still do the therapy exercises on my own.

Once I see Dr. I'll decide weather to do surgery or not, but I'm active around the house a lot, and now it's a chore to watch yourself

Welp, it's more meniscus than ACL, but my ACL has a partial tear, Dr says up to me what I want to do, either surgery or not, but my level of activities plus work he recommends doing surgery, be out 3-4 weeks with a locked brace and aggressive therapy

3-4 weeks is not a bad recovery time, pretty fast actually.

3-4 weeks is not recovery time for an ACL......it's time before you can get back to some normalcy of daily living activities and working. In my business, a "partial tear" of the ACL is like being "almost pregnant". Either you are or you aren't and either it's torn or it isn't. We fix them all if there is any level of instability on clinical exam (almost always the case). The last thing that you want os to fix the meniscus and have an unstable knee that gives out and you are back under the knife because the ACL tore completely or the meniscus gets damaged again. I would consider a "one stop" approach where the ACL is fixed with the meniscus......take your medicine now knowing the recovery is going to suck for a bit but you will be much better off in the long run. Just my .02

Check out this guy on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/c/thekneesovertoesguy Seems to be having some success with different methods of doing things. I have been using a sled as he describes in his videos and it makes a big difference in how my knees feel.

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and but a 3 foot section of 6" PVC......we have tried every roller available for purchase and the PVC is by far the most durable and effective

Bummer. I would get the surgery.

Having my ACL replaced at the end of the month. It’s not torn, but degenerative. Looks all inflamed on the back side of the knee connecting to the bones.

Good info! My PT Doc doesn’t recommend rolling the IT band due to most people screwing it up. This video looks like it clears up the bad vs the right way.

That's a bummer, but at least knee surgeries are super routine. They've got a fix and you'll be good as new in no time!

ligaments don't heal themselves (i.e. they are very slow to heal and rest is only what does it) if it's a minor tear or lateral (with tissue). If it's a tear against the grain my understanding is that there are really two options: surgery or you can try PSP or Super Shot treatments. I tore my MCL and PCL snowboarding with a minor sprain on my ACL. No surgery - left it to rest and then did PT. Been fine to this day and now just my right knee is giving me problems. My also have a TFCC tear - that one I will be trying the Super Shot (and heavier duty PSP shot) next year when I have some budget for it. Until then I've moved my lifting to maintenance and unfortunately no golf until I get the shot :(

again, as it's been said - don't let it sit - I pretty much had a "frequent visitor punch card" growing up with the ER/hospital (sprains, a break, even a skull fracture - which could explain a lot...) - one thing I've learned is the longer you wait the worse it gets. No one stops living and you're gonna do what you want to do and just advil it up. take care of it and best wishes for you.

Post ACL surgery will be locked with a hinged knee brace in extension, it might be NWB (non weight bearing) if the meniscus is repaired vs. removal of the part of the damage menuscus then it will be WBAT (weight bearing as tolerated) with axillary crutches. The management will be by phase and is based on soft tissue healing post surgery. Regaining of ROM is the primary focus particularly early full knee extension to decrease the pressure in the knee and repaired structure upon weight bearing.

get a physical therapist that is familiar in sport injury or better yet your doctor has certain out patient clinic that they refer patients frequently and is familiar on that doctors protocol. Rehab on it will be generally divided into 3 phase (range of motion, strength and power) with each phase lasting 3 weeks and at the end of the 10wk will be return to function that has certain stages to gradually load your knee that will simulate certain rigors of daily activities including jogging. Time line however is more of a guideline for physical therapist and will sometime be delayed depending on age, previous activities and progression of strengthening and range of motion.

There are challenges that can impact the outcome such sa reluctance on working the knee due to apprehension from re-injury of the repaired ACL, pain, limited range of motion, weakness. So make sure perform your home exercise program as that will also make a difference when you are not having PT sessions and control of inflammation and pain.

    EDIT:
Sorry, @ColoradoTJ , I forgot what i was responding to:

So roll everything with a foam roller, almost every muscle group every day. IT band is the hip all the way down past the knee. Lay on your side and start with the roller under you and just above the head of the femur and work down all they way past your knee and back. Repeat as necessary, probably at least 5 times each leg.

Good luck using pvc for that; its gonna hurt like hell.

I like pvc for the big boys (quads, glutes, hammys, lats) but I can hardly stand to do my IT bands with a foam roller.

When I started having this issue, I noticed my hammys up behind my knee were really tight so I started hitting them hard with the roller and it seemed to loosen up the rest of my knee. I also would roll the inside and outside of my knees by laying on my side and pushing down to lift my hips off the ground to get enough pressure. I'm not sure if that did anything but I just always like to get the blood moving in areas i'm having issues.

I haven't noticed my knee clicking the past few days so I think that rolling helped the rest of the knee chill out enough to re align.

Tore my ACL years ago same surgeon said I can fix it and I did did your son's (22 years old) 6 weeks ago no problem. But you are bone on bone in both knees so as soon as I do the surgery and tighten up your knee you will have the bone on bone pain. As your cartilage is gone, then you will want a total knee which does not have an ACL anyway. His recommendation was if the knee does not give out over 3-4 times a year live with it. Which I have done for 12 years, and my knee has not gave out in 8-10 years. Funny I asked what if somebody is chasing with a big knife, he laughed and said turn right and not left or your dead!
