How can I set up the radio to go silent when I have a text message being played by app on car play.
Currently while in CarPlay and Listening to tunes I don’t receive a ding alerting I have been sent a message and if I happen to notice one and play it I can’t hear it because radio doesn’t gonsilent

It's been an ongoing complaint and Toyota is aware of it, and is supposedly working on an update.

If you press the volume knob in, it works as a pause/play button. Haven't tried it while having it read a message, but worth a shot.

My truck does what the op is asking for no problem. If I’m driving down the road it’ll ding, a banner pops up. If I click the banner it’ll read me the text and lower the volume of the stereo as a voice over then ask me if I want to reply. Granted, I have an iPhone and not sure if the op has iPhone or something different.

There isn’t a setting in the vehicles customization options to declare the action though. All this is setup through the phone settings. The only option given with the trucks settings is the volume level of playback.

I was going to say, i think mine does lower the front speakers radio volume too when i receive a text. But Im not sure, i know the Toyota navigation also lowers the radio volume when giving directions. Also using an iphone. Ill have to check and see, next time i get a msg while driving

I think you'll get the ding only if your iPhone silent switch is not engaged, otherwise the nav system will interrrup whatever screen I'm on and CarPlay pops up with a notification only that a text has arrived. Can't comment on other phones.

I do have an Iphone I set in the charging station in console when driving . If I get a text message I never see it or get a notification unless I have the toyota screen on apple car play and with all the apps opened up on Toyota display . I don't have phone on silent , If i have waze pulled up on carplay and on big screen it never lets me know i got a text and doesn't silent radio if I play text message over speaker . I haven't found how to adjust voice level either .
I can't find anything in owners manual so far.
I have had GMC before , this is my first Toyota truck , In GMC hook up via blue tooth ,driving directions , waze alerts , text and phone calls would come thru speakers and silent radio . I have had no luck in finding how to set this up in toyota

I use an iPhone and with directions, it lowers the stereo down quite a bit. With iMessage, it does not lower enough to hear it.

To adjust volume, you have to do it while the msg is being read. Once it starts reading the volume is for it, not the radio volume. I’ve learned to turn radio down before I play the msg.

Running an iPhone 12 Pro and I will get a pop up on the screen with the senders contact name notifying me of a text, but if I click it to play, the music does not lower or mute... I've tried to use the volume knob to turn the text volume up while it's being read, and it's hit or miss on if that actually works...

I do hope they fix it soon...

Sometimes if apps / software isn’t updated things can get glitchy. Ensure phone & apps are up to date as well as head unit software. May not help but….‍♂️
