I was denied coverage on that part from my local dealership. I was told they tried to cover it but was advised to call Toyota directly. Toyota didn't understand why they didn't want to do a warranty claim as it is covered. Rep from Toyota called my local dealership and told them to cover it, at which time my service advisor ordered the part. Just waiting for the part to come in. Should be today.

FYI: My dealership told me if they didn't cover it, it would be $140.58 for the part and 0.5 in labor hours totaling a cost of $288.68 after tax and service charges...

I notice when I get in the truck my a$$ definitely rests on it, seems it should be a bit more robust to handle the big American butts...

My 2015 didn’t have a grab handle and I slide my arse out on the seat for 5 years…no issues whatsoever.

Just poorer quality I must say (I am very disappointed in Toyota).

It's all about trust. I wouldn't trust them to do anything else to my vehicle after that. I would tell that dealer to pound sand and go to another dealer.

I had the same problem, but both the driver and passenger side front panels cracked and popped off. The dealership replaced both today free of charge. I don't think new panels is the fix though. I think the seat padding material is the issue. The outer edge of the seat doesn't have much support. Its almost like a sponge material and you can compress it with your hand and see how it effects the panel. My fiance has a newer Highlander and she has similar leather seats. Her seats have better support therefore they don't compress as much and don't come in to contact with the panels. Will be interesting to see how Toyota addresses this.

After having a couple apart… the 3rd gen tundra interior plastic quality has seriously taken a hit over previous Toyotas.. everything is thin.

is this happening to only power seats? anyone with manual seats run into this issue? i'm wondering if having that panel of switches causes the area to be a bit weaker compared to manual seats having the blank slate.

to be fair seat plastics have been an issue since the 90s on some toyotas. look at 1st gen tacomas.
almost all the cars and smaller SUVs suffer from it 10+.

but having door panels off these? yea.. everything feels cheap. and tint shops have been breaking door panels too.. never had this issue before with a toyota. and i've seen 3 now at work.

Toyota says no to a warranty claim on the trim panel

    this is a quote
If it was not broken then yes it would be covered

I replied if it was not broken then there would be no need for a warranty claim huh

    lol

    oh well

Curious, Did they give you an estimate to replace on your own dime?

Also, that wouldn’t fly with me. Sounds like material defect in its purest definition, not “normal wear or abuse.” I’d contact Toyota Brand Engagement and see what they have to say. Especially on a new model, with multiple reports of the same defect.

    Parts around $100, plus labor.

I am going to let it be, let it stand as a testimony to the cheap crappy plastic. LOL.

Yeah this wouldn’t fly with me either…not a one off situation and not a wearable part.

Tim (from Pickup Trick and SUV talk) and what’s his name from Toyota (Mike Sweers) spent much time talking about the condition of the million mile Tundra seats then they deliver this crap to us…that’s just not cool

I had mine replaced under warranty with no griping from the dealer whatsoever.

The replacement has already popped off again, but nothing broke, so I just popped it back in.

I think the plastic is actually taking load from sitting on it, so I'm trying to make sure my ass is centered in the seat.

Found this today. Not sure when it happened. I don’t remember seeing it last week when I dropped it off for the recall. :(

This seems to be an increasingly wide-spread issue, and I’m thinking it’s a design flaw vs something “fixed” by replacing the panel. Really curious how Toyota confronts this.

Yup. Just like the broken trim on my platinum that caught the front door and broke off. Still no replacement piece yet. Another very common issue. The weird thing is that my truck went through 2 QC holds before delivery and they still missed it

Well I hope this doesn't happen when I get my 2022, but it did just happen in my 2016. I think you and couple of other members here are correct. It seems the plastic is taking the load when sitting in the seat. I remember hearing a pop a while back but never saw any visible signs of damage. I never thought it would be the plastic around the seat. Now it is hanging off and is visibly cracked on the top. I just ordered the part for $80 plus. I have been sliding out of that seat for years without a problem but I will say that my posterior has grown over the years as well. Maybe it just has had enough.:rofl:I raised the thigh support to keep my butt off the plastic trim.
