Keep my 2005 or move on to 2011?

I’ve got a 2005, 4.7l v8, 2nd with 208,650 miles in her. It is a 2 Ed. Got all the maintenance records since the day it was new and I just had the timing belt changed with everything else changed that goes with that project. No rust, frame in excellent condition, runs great.

considering getting a 2011 5.7 L v8 that has more bells and whistles with 165,500 miles on it for $17,000. This one is 4 wd. Thoughts?

 

Get the 4wd 2011 Tundra and sell the 2005. You won’t have to worry about certain parts being discontinued like trim pieces and other miscellaneous stuff.

Well you can always keep the 2005 until you feel confident about the 2011. Worst case you resell it for what you paid.

 

If 4x4 is really on the list of must haves then I guess you go get what you need or want. Aside from that little thing, the 11 is bigger and so is the engine but that 5.7 is a aluminum block vs the 4.7 being some kind of iron graphite (can't remember exactly), longevity favors the 4.7. They both have the same transmission, key and separate fob. The 11 has a more interior space, 05 more bed space.
Basically, I've tossed this idea around just like you and felt staying with my 05 and investing a little bit into the things I wanted or needed was a better idea. I know exactly what my truck has done and what she needs vs selling and then spending thousands just to get that truck to where my present truck is.
With that said, $17k trucks need maintenance and isn't really an upgrade, $50k trucks are really nice and would be nice upgrade.

 

Yea, my truck is fine but would like 4wd, tow package and larger engine, just not sure if that would be worth the extra $$. But I do think I could get $8000 out of mine, maybe a little more?

 

Gears and a LSD would get you what you need for towing and traction but there's no fix for 4x4, you either have it or don't.

You can get a used LSD diff off of some of the 4x4 Tundra and I think there's a 2wd sport package that had it also. New LSD can be installed in your diff, basically ripping the guts out and installing it.
4.56 gears and LSD would take your truck from being your 2nd aging 20+ year marriage into that young cashier in the supermarket. Just remember, you ain't 20 anymore either

It ain't cheap, figure a complete rebuild of the diff and new gears and LSD to be around $1,800 to $2,500.

 

Yea, just put $2,800 in her with the timing belt, water pump, pulleys…..

 

The 4x4 ultimately is the deciding factor. Your well maintained 05 truck is very capable and has a lot of life in it, going through the threads here you will see many topics regarding proper maintenance and a few upgrades that can improve on it's driveability, performance increases are scarse aside from the supercharger (over rated IMO). But things like the Dirty Deed's 12 hole injectors that some here including myself have installed, doesn't increase power but definitely changes how it performs.
Just saying...... Stick around for a bit and see what your truck is capable of and then decide if it fits your needs

Yes, hard pill to swallow. Just really more than I wanted to tackle myself. But with that done should be good to go other than normal maintenance

 

Okay, I’m not the only one who thought that as well.

 

I was quoted $750 from dealer for timing belt job. Thought that included idler and tensioner pulleys but those were around $150 or so each. It was somewhere around $1100. I had that done when they were already replacing my frame.

Cheapest dealership price I've found in the Atlanta area, across all dealerships, was in the scope of $2200-2400 if memory serves. So it's not just you.

If it was only $1,100 with OEM parts at the local dealership for me, I'd be all over it. These days, with kids and house to juggle, saving 4-6 hours of my time is worth the extra $100/hr or whatever I'd be paying for labor.

 

The cost of everything and anything has been going up at an alarming rate, but our paycheck seems to continue with the measly 3% cost of living increase.

 

I got a 2.6% increase in 2020. 0% increase in 2021. 1.8% in 2022. No comment.

 

I bet the board of directors got a few million in bonuses

Just gotta scoot on up to Etown and let them work you out lol. I'm not sure the exact number as the pricing wasn't laid out perfectly because I had a bunch of stuff done (upper ball joints, some radiator nonsense) when the frame was replaced but total for everything done with frame replacement was $1438.

This sounds like my job although I haven’t gone below 1.5 yet. We must work for the same company. haha

I can’t wait for the day I tell them I’m leaving and they’ll probably respond “Who are you again?”.
