I am trading in my 2022 sr5 with convenience package and bsm in metallic grey for a 2023 sr5 trd sport premium in lunar rock. The new truck has many things I want including color, softec power seats, heated seats, and the bilstein suspension. I am bummed to realize though that I’ll be giving up bsm mirrors, large gas tank, and the parking sensors. I would not have though that a “premium package” would be missing these quite typical and sought after features. Anyway, what would you do? Make the switch or hold tight?

Yeah you have to add the convenience package to get the big fuel tank. I am waiting on a TRD sport myself but it also had the other package which was just what I wanted. Of course it’s been sitting in a rail yard for a few months so we will see if they ever get it done.

the large fuel tank is a must in my opinion

Yeah somewhat agree. I am basically trading some things that are “convenient” for the things I really wanted from the start. I’m definitely stoked about the color and more comfortable seats… but will have to see how much of a bummer it’ll be to not have the convenience features

The larger gas tank would be my #1 priority. Zero chance I would take a truck without it.

I’m trying to think about it this way. Before my 2022 tundra that I have had the last 6 months, I have never had more than 300ish miles of range in a vehicle and never thought it was annoying. I figure even with the small tank I’ll have 400 miles range, which is decent. And I don’t tow often. At least my range will better than it used to be! Although, the large tank had been quite nice!

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
Tough call to make. I’m an SR5 guy for my last 3 Tundras. I went with the Limited this time because of the standard Softex, Memory seats, Larger fuel tank, BSM, Power mirrors and Sensors. Lastly Lunar Rock.

I would hold on to what you have. The 23’s are priced higher now even the accessories went up like the side steps went up $200 bucks.

I will admit the Lunar Rock color is a looker. I would way the pro’s and con’s

I had an SR5 with the small gas tank for a few months before I got my limited. I was shocked at how often I was putting gas into that SR5. Way too small.

I also had the basic seats in the SR5 (no up/down). These seats sit way too high! Granted I'm 6'5", but I couldn't see traffic lights at a stop or any cars to my right at an intersection because the rear view mirror was right in my line of sight. Power seats in my limited are great for me. I don't understand the factory height of basic seats. You can add seat jackers if your seats are too low, but you're screwed if they're too high.

I find the BSM hard to see and it doesn't do much for me. They made it into some design that looks like a symbol, but what it really needs is a bright light that I can actually see. Why do I need a symbol to tell me what the light means? I know what the light means, I need to be able to see it.

I agree the bsm isn’t that big of a deal. Some little convex stick ones could be just as effective. Good to hear your experience with gas tank. I think it won’t be a big deal to me based on the driving I do. My Tacoma had a smaller tank and worse mileage than the tundra with the small tank. I am curious, do you think you were getting the full 22.5g capacity? Or a few gallons less because of the “reserve tank” which I’ve seen talk of.

One thing I will miss are the parking sensors. They help a ton with my tight garage parking.
I also have big problems with the manual cloth seats in my current truck. I’m 6’ and feel like I sit way too low and they ate quite uncomfortable without lumbar adjustments.
Certain things would improve big tone and others not so much… heated seats are also a plus…

thanks, love your truck! The pros and cons are a tough one right now
I’m actually going to come out money wise in a good spot since the trucks are still so sought after.

I'm really confused about the "reserve tank" situation. I don't felt like I noticed anything strange with my SR5, but my second fill-up on my limited got me messed up. Truck said I only had 18 miles of driving left and gauge was damn near zero (no low gas warning). I filled it up, but could only get 22 gallons in. Topped it off 3 times to see if it just accidentally clicked off. The truck then said it was full and I had `450 miles until empty. By calculation, I should get around 550 miles on a full tank. So are they treating us like idiots that don't know how to read and manage a tank of gas? I wish the truck would just be honest with me about how much gas I have rather than treating me like an idiot who doesn't know how to put gas in when it gets low.

Yeah it’s very confusing. Some people have said there is one big tank and one small tank and that fuel level is measured on the big one. Whether this is true or not, it’s clear that Toyota is lying about how much gas is left. I’ve also run my truck to empty in the indicator and only filled up 24/32 gallons…

I have same issue with the gas tank.

I have 1794 edition, and it's supposed to have larger 32gallon tank standard. However, my Low Gas warning light came on, and after driving another ten miles, I was only able to pour 21 gallons of gas, and level showed full tank.

So it's either a glitch, or they installed a smaller gas tank on my truck. Dealer service advisor didn't know and his computer showed small or large for my vin number... So I'm still trying to investigate

How do you know that you actually have large gas tank in your truck? Maybe they installed a small one?

I put 26 gallons in earlier tonight, so it's definitely the larger tank. Truck said I only had 18 miles left at the time. Low light didn't come on. I think the truck is just hiding about 5 gallons from me.

    I see.

So maybe it's just a crappy glitchy gas gauge that we have?

Gas tanks are a years long conversation for those with 2.5 gen and earlier. Maybe they used a similar design.

With last Tundra (2018) and this one, I've always been able to add another $10 in fuel after the handle clicks off by adding fuel super slowly.
Sure, it might mess with the carbon filter, but I've never had any smells or issues - other than people getting miffed waiting for me to fill up.

It'll mess with more than just the carbon filter. Topping off like that could foul your evap system and cost you a couple grand getting it repaired......

I would not due to the TRD Sport suspension (and it being effectively lowered compared to your current rig).

You get 400m range with the small tank? Mine shows 430ish with the large tank.

With the amount they are asking for the new truck, you better get everything you want on it otherwise hold tight until you do.

I’d put Bilsteins on your current truck and call it a day. There’s no way I’d go back to a smaller tank.

These are long, shallow fuel tanks. As such, Toyota builds them to have a substantially larger reserve than you might otherwise think it needs. Gotta keep that fuel pump submerged, even on steep inclines/declines.

Wishful thinking. I have the large tank and barely get above 400 miles per tank. I also have a boat I tow on the weekend. I have 275/65/20 tires and don't have the lightest foot. Kind of hard to be easy on this truck when it's so damn fast for its size. If you need/want at least 400 miles range on a tank you'd better get the larger tank unless you always plan to be driving on eco mode.
