Hi. I recently bought a new 2022 Tundra TRD PRO and have driven it for about 260 miles. I recently saw a small oil leak right under the radiator housing on the driver's side. Any ideas on what this might be? The leak drops down from the front area where the air dam would be closed (TRD PROs don't have the air dam so that area is wide open). I have not added any fluids to the truck since picking it up from the dealer. I will try to get pics later but wanted to get started here to see if anyone else had any type of oil leak in the front area. Thanks.

Welcome…there was an oil leak post on here a while back but it didn’t get much traction so I assumed it was a one off and not a widespread issue.

Honestly, were I in your position I would be taking it right back to the dealership and let them figure it out…new truck and your time is money (appreciate you self diagnosing like we all try to do) but you already paid them for a warranty so use it.

Hopefully it’s nothing big and you are able to enjoy the ride

Mine is currently at the dealership I bought it from, my local dealership couldn’t figured out where the oil is coming from and told me to take it back and have them look at it, now I have a rattle noise that sound like it’s coming from the transmission and a creaking noise.

my local dealer also have a black trd pro 400 miles on it with a high pitch noise that they can’t figure out, Toyota told them this trucks are so new they don’t have much data to pin point this issues

Looks like it could be a rear main seal, surprises me that they just wouldn't pull out the trans to determineit unless they are soley relying on computers to tell them what's wrong with it

Unfortunately, the days of old school troubleshooting are nearly dead. Even the new gen of ASE Certified Mechanics pretty much rely solely on their Snap On or Autel scanners.

That makes me sound super old, but I'm 40. I worked at a shop as a Service Writer (and Tech I in the summers for extra hours) for 4 years while I was in college. The old school guys I worked with, at the time, were all ASE Master Techs. I've come to respect them more and more as time goes on.

Oh I know man my brother is also an ASE master tech and he rarely gets his hands dirty, he says that most shops want them to hook it up to a scanner before pulling anything apart. I turned wrenches for years and had my own shop so it drives me nuts with how the industry has changed.

Definitely taking it to the dealership and still love it. I got this truck fully expecting things to go wrong (1st year model and all) and wanted to do this post so that folks could be aware of this possibility. Bummer that the dealer I bought from is 2 hours away (they made the magic happen to get me the PRO at MSRP)--and I really like them. Will give my local Toyota dealer a try and see how their service is. I'm a long-time Toyota fan--started with a 2014 FJ Cruiser which I kept for 6 years then traded that in for a 2020 Army Green Tacoma PRO. Enjoyed that truck until I traded it in for the 2022 Tundra. Both the FJ and the Taco were perfect--absolutely nothing went wrong. And I modded the heck out of those vehicles and had a blast with them.

I was on the FJ and Taco forums and looking forward to learning about the Tundra here. Thanks for all your feedback!

how funny I also had a 2014 fj cruiser with 100k miles and 2018 Tacoma 70k miles with 0 issues, I also knew I took a chance having issues with first year production but was not expecting oil leaks and frame creaks and engine rattles at 2000 miles both dealerships have been great and hope they resolve my issues.

Have they figured out the issue yet? I know you had posted in another thread!

No yet I know they been driving the truck and testing because i get constant alerts on the app of doors been open, as soon as I get news I’ll report back, also on the way to the dealership the truck started a rattle noise looks like it’s coming from the tranny.

I started doing my bumper/winch/lighting install this weekend, which required me to drop the skid plate.

I noticed same dried oil stain at the RMS location on my truck. It was dry to the touch and didn't look "active." I also didn't notice anything on my skid plate either. I haven't noticed any transmission noises, per se. Just the random startup "clunk" that many folks have mentioned and that I've had my dealership investigate twice with no luck.

I'm not too worried about this yet. I'll have my next service appointment in a couple of months. I'll snap a pic of it for reference when I take it in next and keep an eye on it in the meantime. I've got about 17k on my truck, so no clue when this happened.

Any update to your problem, has the dealer provided you with some information as what it could be? The tranny noise and/or the oil leak that is.

Well the oil leak apparently was residual oil from assembly (don’t believe that) but it hasn’t leak oil for 1 week since I got it back.

the rattle noise still not sure what it is, they were supposed to replace the transmission but turns out that when the rattle starts if you turn the AC off the rattle goes away and it only happens at certain temperatures, I needed the truck back so they gonna have it again in about a month to check it out again.

I also have this clunk noise going over rough roads sounds like it’s coming from the bed but not sure they couldn’t find the source of the clunk again they gonna check it again in a month.

At this point I’m not sure if I want to keep the truck I may end up selling it and get a 2023.

I can't speak to the clunk/other noises you're experiencing but regarding the oil on the bell housing, your dealer might be right.

A couple of weekends ago (I posted above on 9/26), I saw the same oil residue on my trans bell housing. In my case it was all dried, but you could see where it came out of a small weep port on the bottom of the trans. I cleaned it off with some Simple Green. Since then, I've put about 500 miles on the truck. I crawled under the truck on Sunday and I haven't noticed any additional oil leak or additional residue there.

Thanks for the follow-up, unfortunately dealers try to brush you off, is it really residual oil, perhaps, but I'd say monitor it closely. The rattle is most likely the bed, it seems like a common thing on these trucks, but haven't seen a permanent fix for it yet.

As for selling it, join the club, that's what I did with my '22, and now waiting on my '23 that is supposed to arrive in the new year.

@Tundrafarm what was the outcome with your presumed oil leak? The picture you took looks exactly like mine should I be worried and take it in? I just noticed mine after 4k miles. Noticed a couple fresh drops of oil in my garage. Funny how I took the truck in a few days for a service (break recall and tire rotation).FE49FA88-CD1A-412E-A820-92F9753899AE.jpg

Well they said it was residual oil from assembly, I just took this picture is been almost 2 weeks since I got it back and no oil yet.

I would take it in just so it gets documented just in case, I never saw oil drops on my garage I saw it because I been chasing a clunk noise which I believe is coming from my rear driver side cab mount.

this guys never check for anything else is so frustrating my clunk noise is there and can hear it but they can not.

Dealership never found anything wrong so I ordered new cab mounts the noise was gone immediately on one side the other side was less noise but after couple of months the noise returned on both sides, at this point I don’t care anymore, toyota never cared and so my dealership.
