What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yes I did. Just used a wire wheel. Cleaned it off with rubbing alcohol and used the fusion paint. It stuck very well and it brightens the truck up a bit

 

Hey all - new member here. I purchased a 2001 V8 4wd AC a month or two back w/ 138k and have been playing catchup on things to do. My prior experience was a 1997 4Runner 3.4L 4wd.

So far:
- 5100s front and back w/ OME 884 springs, and the Icon AAL (all from 1st gen offroad - Josh was great). much better than the monroes on front and maybe the 21 year old original shocks on back? rough stuff. done by shop as I had done similar on the 97 4runner and everything was so rusted on, it was a multi day affair and not worth doing now, especially since my more handy friend who helped on the last one moved away.
- alignment
- new Duratrac 267/75/R16
- alignment (stoked on that 3 year unlimited deal!)
- new steering rack (shop did it)
- suspension maxx extended (and way burlier!) sway bar end links (old ones were super fun to hacksaw off when they started to spin on removal)
- started building a very simple 2x6 and plywood platform for the bed for camping, mosquito net to drape over the shell window (no sliders/screens sadly)
- bed rug on the floor, didn't love the plastic bed liner
- new Boss stereo, touchscreen but WITH a volume/control knob, w/ backup camera
- husky plastic liners. more plastic-y than anticipated but they were cheaper than weathertec and seem easy to clean and won't discolor
- dog hammock for the back seats
- back window aluminum latch things

* (it had limited old records, but looks like it had a 90k Toyota dealer service, then oil changes etc since then, which was appx 50k miles ago*
- there was record the timing belt change at around 90k (YES!), but then I checked the date and it was circa 2007, so good on mileage, crap on years/longevity. I'll have the shop do another one
- spark plugs (got "OEM" Densos from local dealer)
- oil change w/ high mileage synthetic
- drain and fill ATF
- eventually 13WL brake upgrade once these pads etc are ready to go
- want to play w/ the LSPV in small increments and see how it does on brake feel
- GFC (Go Fast Camper) or local similar concept rooftent+shell vs Radica Moonlander (google it if you haven't yet, I love space shows and seems practical vs just keep the camper shell on there (or casually look for a higher rise and/or something w/ side window sliders)
- ? Hellwig rear sway bar
- ? maaco paint job (or DIY bedliner or similar). not a show pony but I hate the sunburn look

Tundra has AVS vent visors and the driver side tape was giving up .... Put my Mafia hat to good use and proceeded to install NEW 3M tape where needed BUT in doing so the spidey lines decided to GROW....

No cracks yet but my "mod wish list" just got jumbled...

Only $$ my kids won't get when I pass on...

I'm on the Central coast of California, so quite a trip from Arkansas! I've been hunting CL here, Santa Barbara/Ventura and SF Bay area CL for shells and they are few and far between for these, so may just have to go GFC! Or Topo Toppers is another one that just popped up in Ventura area but they don't support 1st gen tundras (yet).

 

Minus the TRD package and I think we've about got the same truck. Welcome from KY!

 

Gave in and got a grey wheel and bag. The black wheel will go on the ‘05 and I’ll either get a black two stage bag for audio controls or attempt the rivet game and use the cheapo Ali-express cover which doesn’t match color perfectly.

I have one clock spring but if I need two I might need to hunt. Ironically, the ‘05 had a clock spring replaced due to airbag light coming on by the PO as explained verbally and visible in owners history. I don’t know if the part number is in there but maybe that means I have audio through the clock spring unless they used a 2005 specific part for some reason.

Got that Seauoia rear hatch handle replaced. Got myself a 100% metal replacement on the big A for like 25 bucks so hoping it wont break again. Bonus points for smacking the window regulator a few times and getting the rear window problem "fixed" while I was in there.

 

Huh, where'd you manage to score that, and off what model/yr? I think my grey is a little darker than that, but you know how light in pics goes. I have one off a T4R that's leather-wrapped, but the controls are backlit orange, and the wheel is a tad darker than charcoal, but not quite black. Trying to find a good fit is tough. But yours, that thing looks brand new. I wasn't willing to drop the $800 on a new wheel...

 

I’ve had a feeler out for wheels for a while. The bag is from an ‘03 sequoia and not sure if it was repacked or not but it was sold by an authorized airbag seller. I figure the bag is the hardest part for me since I’m a one plug truck. Then the wheel just happened to show up soon after, also sequoia and I think 03-04 but not sure they listed a vin. I have a clockspring from the black wheel I already have.

My big mistake was getting the wheel first. Black single stage airbag with one connector is either hard to find or impossible. So, since I bought the ‘05, I figured I’d just go with leather for all 3 trucks.

Airbag was 150, wheel was 100, the black wheel was also about 100. Seems like good condition doesn’t cost more, just sells more rapidly. One spot where eBay is working in our favor on suggested pricing. Kinda like the floor mat search you have.

 

Rotors came in for the BBK. Just waiting on brake lines

I'd take it, but it won't fit 1st 1st gens. I think when they added vsc they changed the bezel.

 

Yup, I suspect it's the case, like the SHIFT L or whatever to get into 1st gear is added in later years, and maybe there's a change to the hazard lights or air bag light?

I forget.

Shop remodel starts Monday. My shop space is being reduced down to 7x7x9, my own personal little jail cell for my work bench and tools. Plus a separate storage space of 4x7x9 for parts, occasional tools, etc.

 

Any tips on ways to streamline the prep for shop remodel? I have to get all the stuff I just stuffed into the garage out of it for floors on 10/3. Thinking it's too late to get a shed by then (and no time to put it together) so tarps and stack everything in the yard on the grass? Slightly tempted to do a small time plywood bunker.

 

Id do a plywood bunker or stack on pallets and tarp it. I am currently using my 20' enclosed hauler as a temporary garage/ tool storage as we prep to pour concrete in the Machine Shed before winter (god i hope). Extra Shelves are key it seems. Twice as many as I usually use is what its taking to even start organizing my stuff in this tighter space.

 

Like @Seibler said, it's all about shelves. I've got several of those "Metro" wire rack shelves we used to use all the time when I worked in the restaurant world earlier in life. Most are 48" wide, 24"-30" deep. They all have stout wheels on the bottom and roll freely, even loaded up.

I have a pile of those plastic Rubbermaid style bins, all the small bits are going in the bins to be sorted later, all the large parts are going on the shelves. Once loaded, I've got a 10" wide 1,000ft roll of stretch rap/pallet wrap/visqueen/wtf ever you call it. It's getting wrapped from top to bottom so they can be rolled out of the way and won't take on any drywall dust.

Anything that won't die from heat I'll carry up into the attic, like bins of alloy & steel parts, tools, bike frames, wheelsets, etc. Anything heat-sensitive like speakers, thin plastics, vintage electronics, guitars & amps are relocating to another room. The half dozen complete bikes I've got are going to a friend's house next door, he has the extra space I don't right now.

Get to save some money too. Bought a couple of 250ft rolls of 12/2 and 14/2 romex back when prices were maybe $50-60/ea? I was shocked, $177/ea right now. And I found several boxes of matching LVP from when I did an adjacent room 12 years ago, in a closet while cleaning, there's another $400 saved. Just gotta get packed...

 

Oh damn, this is the 'what did you do' thread. Ok, here's what I did related to the truck today.

I took the plunge, I'm gonna be a Guinea pig on this one. I used the 20% off coupon I shared over here and picked one of these up to test it out as an alternative for iOS users who want a TorquePro-like setup in their trucks. I have a ton of old iPhones and crap laying around, and maybe an iPad mini, and these people make their own app that's very similar in nature.

And it would appear the "assembled in China" part of this is why there are so many knockoffs of this USA-designed product on scAmazon and fleaBay. Sounds like the same thing that happened to Teq Customers with their 1st gen grille.

 

Fellow guitar player huh? Ive been downgrading my gear and selling a lot lately and just kinda keeping what I really need. But my Friedman amp and Japanese made 80s and 90s Ibanez guitars are probably never going anywhere. Curious about what vintage guitars and amps you have though!

 

@shifty` let us know what the update rate is on live data. I may be interested in getting one myself.

 

"Picker" may be a better term, I don't grab one and just ... play. Every now and then I'll plug in and play the few things I know. More than anything, I restore a lot of vintage stuff to take my mind off work, 'real life'. Turntables, receivers, guitar amps, guitars, racing bikes, etc. It's more a (sanity + side hustle) thing than anything else.

@Darkness was another one of our resident guitar guys for 1st Gen. There are quite a few others floating around also. But I'm definitely not this guy. I don't have a ton, a couple of oddballs I'm working on. The size/shape of your average LP in single or double cut is usually what I'm hunting for out in the wild to restore.

Nothing high-end... a couple of lawsuit-era LPs I'm working on right now, one from Encore (E49), a Hondo II (H740). I picked up a couple of 80s/90s $200-$400 guitars earlier this year needing work, Arbor mid-higher model, Washburn Wi21 I think was targeted at the central/south American and EU market, not a ton of info out there.

 

Oh very cool, restoring vintage stuff sounds pretty fun. Although if you dont know what youre doing, working on an tube amp can be pretty dangerous. Definitely not part of my abilities, haha.

Those lawsuit LPs look interesting and its pretty amazing how close some of those get to the Gibsons!

Having gotten through just that task, get a dumpster! That makes it easy to toss stuff. Doesn't have to be a 9 yard sized one, but your are going to clean up whether you like it of not! After I accepted that reality, I bought my Tuff Shed, that's all parts and material storage for me, My Stockroom! Since I have only a 1 car garage, I had to custom build the work table, it does triple duty, welding, wood, storage... There happened t be a hardware store that went out of business many moons ago, I bought an Isle of shelving... that lines one wall. Tools, power tools, some parts. everything's laid out for efficiency, so far it's working.
Good luck on your rebuild, don't rush, think about it, kick some ass. and getter done! Then ENJOY!!!

 

How long does it need to be out? What about a POD rental?

 

Pod would be spendy. 24 dry / cure time. Extract day 1, day 2 workers grind, seal and finish, day 3 replace things.

I found some tarps on eBay for pretty cheap.

we just moved so things are highly organized in bins but some stuff like fridge, workbench and tool bench are too big to move too far.

 

Wonder if TRD makes the Lexus GX set?

 

I am not quite in the same predicament BUT with the Florida Room Reno scheduled "as soon as roof panels ship" we "priced" storage for everything and the easiest solution became a U-haul truck for a week, Pods, shipping container and such become costly due to delivery and pick-up fees..

And yesterday U-haul sweetened the deal with a months free rental/storage if the "Reno" goes sideways...

Now granted I have used them since the 90's and the young lady setting up my reservation "Giggled" when she realized I have been a customer longer than she's been alive But they just do "Rental Right"...

I have a clean plan for the build, all that is no problem. Just have to get the floor done. Last garage I was a single dude. This time I’m told I can’t use the house for my crap.

I’ve looked at sheds a lot over the past few weeks. Prices are kinda crazy and material seems lousy. I don’t want to pay thousands for OSB walls and roof, much rather have plywood. Hardest part seems to be the foundation and floor and most sheds don’t help there. And they also don’t help with shingles or flashing.

I figure I can cut 2x4’s and plywood just fine on my own. Do real siding. And a real door. Probably the same cost. Just tons more labor and no chance of having that by 10/3
