I’ve known about that HD rail offering since April when I was talking with Kim about it. I want it, but am trying to decide if I want to try the DIY version or spring for new side rails altogether.

My only complaint about their entire system is that they didn’t set up their mounting to use the factory bed rails. I don’t like the relocation brackets because the rails aren’t nearly as sturdy… but I’m leaning toward switching to cargo tie-down rails like they use in cargo planes instead - it would be low profe enough to keep in the original factory position.

I’ve been emailing Kim about that system. She hasn't sent me any pics though. I’d love to see it.
Totally agreed. I wish they’d make brackets that work with the OEM rails. I still use the rails’ mounting holes for other stuff. My shovel and axe bracket is mounted using those holes. You could also mount cleats or D loops.

You can get different lengths of rails here. Are these what you mean?

    Yep
    L-Track
I couldn’t remember the name last night
I had it mounted on the floor of my bed in my 2008 and it was handy. I’ve got D-rings on my floor now, but thinking of using L-track for rails. You can attach the tie-offs anywhere instead of the “entry from the end” design of the factory ones

You don’t have to do that. But it would be great. For some reason she never sent me a pic and wanted to discuss it over the phone.

 that’s how the messages get out to the satellites.

originally was going to go with the mini like you but found this guy for 30 bucks so gave it a shot. She’s a big girl but works as it should. Just a taddddd bit clunky.

Figured it’s a hell of a lot easier to teach a 4y/o how to push “the red button” than: take my cell phone, walk to the top of a mountain and dial 911

Have a list of ~20 things that need to get done to get the truck to a current state with all the parts in the garage. Had a goal of getting 8 done today; completed 3. Need to Super Mario level up one of these days and get everything done ..:1up:

After the dash plate, I got around to running the wire from the battery to the bed for the MPPT.

Thank you for posting those pics! Now that I see it, I’m not sure it’s something I want to do.

This looks like the bulk of the weight of the rack is not supported by the bedside itself. It’s centered on the TCUSA side rail, which is not centered over the bedside.

I’ve already had my TCUSA’s drivers side rail sag or droop toward the middle of the bed. I was able to fix it by tightening the clamps that mount the rails to the bedsides, but still. Unless there’s a lot more support we can’t see than the clamps my bed cover has underneath the side rails, the design doesn’t necessarily inspire confidence with a heavy load like an occupied tent.

Here is what I’m referring to. The inside of the TCUSA rail was drooping. I would think that a bunch of added weight would make this happen regularly. But maybe the rails and rack come with more support or more clamps underneath?

Completely agree with you. I think this setup is more for running a rack with rotopax, solar panels, shovels, propane tank, extra suitcases, etc. but not a RTT. Unfortunately, the way the TCUSA rails are designed the Yakima rails need to be centered on them. Too far from on one side and you’re in the area that sits over the bedside; too far the other way and you’re drilling into the channel that the cover runs along. Casey and I had an in-depth conversation about this exact same issue before I mounted my rack and decided to bolt it into the bedside. Im pretty confident I could run a RTT on mine (can shake the entire truck by pushing on the rack), but not sure I want to put that much mass so high up. If I wanted to run just a rack for accessories, I’d probably do just what TCUSA has done here and feel pretty confident with it. Anyway, just my $.02 :notsure::rofl:

Yup, mine droop, too. And this Jeep’s did as well. Would be curious to see if Retrax do as well.

Not sure about extra supports but I’d venture to say probably not

I haven’t looked closely at the retrax ones. I know my TC ones droop, and my previous one on my 2008 did too.

I struggle with having the front rack setup that far from the cab. I don’t run the tool box, so I’d rather have my rack extend toward the cab more. I like the modularity of the Yakima racks, but feel like the function and utility is limited compared to true “overland” racks out there.

Ultimately, I’m leaning toward using something like the Voodoo tonneau mount installed under the TC rails. Put the front posts under the canister area and the rear ones toward the back.

I was going to mention that. I talked with @KB Voodoo about it a while back in another thread, but I haven't heard of anyone using those with a TC cover. Would love to see how well it works.

So going off this for you and @RainMan_PNW I’ll have to get some measurements for you. I believe, if memory serves correctly, the voodoo brackets are 6mm thick. Mine are 4.5mm (had already cut my voodoos and looked all over for second hand ones. Too bad I didn’t know @SAGE63 had some ) and my rails just barely sit flush. Had to squish them pretty good and remove the weather stripping to get them to sit down. I think if you were to put another 1.5mm on there they’d be popping up a bit. I’d be willing to bet the canister would be sticking up. But if you can live with a mm or two, then that’s definitely a great option. Just something to keep in mind ..

Are those clamp-on or do the mount to the factory bed rails? With the TC USA Cover, the factory rails have to be lowered and won’t work with anything that relies on them to be at factory location

Just some cheap L and Z brackets I picked up off AMZN. I was fine with paying the price for KB’s brackets but when they wanted $40 for shipping, I drew the line and decided to go my own route. Obviously not as pretty as theirs but does the trick. Haven’t banged the truck around too much since putting the rack on. If the current brackets fail, I’ll pony up for the shipping
