Haven't been on here in a while, but hope you filthy animals are doing well in life.

Just wanted to drop a quick update is all. I keep in contact with the fella that took the Tundra off my hands, and he's done a great job with evolving it to its final form:

Ugh. So with this LBJ issue, is there any way of visually determining they need replacement? just the usual play when jacked up?

 

Just don't use anything except OEM LBJ and use fresh bolts. Supposedly you should be good. There's another lifetime model out there (I'll edit this to link it later) that could have the longevity, and a specific bolt that's recommended (I'll link that later too) but generally speaking, OEM LBJ, fresh bolts.

you can use a prybar if you really wanna convince yourself to change em. Mine seem fine, but when i do my bushings, i'll do the bj's just to be safe.

I’m confused about this whole lbj matter. The initial recall was a defect in manufacturing. Either that or a poor design being subtly upgraded. Anyhow, now people are stating bolts are shearing or the ball joint itself is failing.

Are these complaints from those who were never serviced for the recall?

 

Thanks for the info. The truck is new to me so I'm not sure what is on there, and I'm taking a long drive this weekend (early tomorrow am) so no time to replace them just in case. Just hoping I don't get a surprise along the way.

Have you gone to Toyota's Owners website to setup an account, link your VIN to yourself, check for open recalls, and look at their records? https://www.toyota.com/owners

Have you looked at your front suspension lately to see if the uppers or lowers look to be newer/older, if the bushings are good, all the other stuff you should check?

I highly, highly doubt a previous owner replaced in the last 80k. But visual check, slap test are both always a good idea any time you've got a front wheel up.

Worthwhile also to check everything else, sway bar bushings, lower shock bushing, etc. to confirm health. Look for rack leaks, y'know, "the usual".

 

most of that is pretty old, but is going bye bye as soon as I start tearing this thing apart. All new suspension, sway bar delete, CV's (these seem to be a little short) etc. Have a slight rack leak but doesn't look too bad. Will rebuild or replace too at that time.
Haven't been driving it much but it's my best option for this trip

I'm more worried sometimes when it comes to the larger caps you find in old receivers than I am tubes

And yeah, for the two LPs I picked up this year, the left Encore one ... not so much, the headstock looks cheap to me but it was an inexpensive score, and it plays nice but needs a new nut. The Hondos were a little more blatant in the early 70s with the open-book headstock and split-diamond inlay. This one is late 70s/early 80s, almost certain it's an H-740 but I'm no Samick expert.

Yeah, they'll most likely snap. The bed bolts in both of my trucks were rusted the hell out. I've posted up pics of em a lot.

Looks like yours came out in one piece. Maybe I’ll soak them by letting them sit in an 8 oz clear bottle of muriatic acid resting on an inverted 5 gallon bucket from underneath the truck.

Brush on, then wrap in cling wrap so the gel doesn't dry up.

 

Yeah, I went to take a look. They’re under the frame rails and not the crossmember as I originally thought. The two near the tailgate are already loose. The two mid-section might come off with the impact. The two nearest the cab are the worst with one adjacent to the fuel tank and hard to get at.

 

I don’t think Jason had any trouble with mine. Other than having to remove the line-x. And I think he slapped on D rings for me before reinstalling the new ones. I could send my used set to someone in need of one or two if they are lying around still when I retrieve it.

 

Good luck. Here's what my bolts looked like on the V6. Had to get creative to remount the bed... I wish I knew to take shots horizontally way back when I did this...




I ended up having to cut those "brackets" off the frame where the welded nuts were.


All 6 of mine were stuck pretty good...

 

@Tundra2 What did you do to re-secure the bed to the frame when you cut off the brackets? Drill new holes and use a nut?

 

I used heavy duty washers that I made, and then a nylock nut. I think it was m12 x 1.5 thread??? Let me check my build thread. I'll post a link in a second...

 

I can't find any pictures of them, but I basically made these. I searched for "uni-strut washers" and this is what came up.

I can say I've legitimately never seen one of these in my life and I'm trying to figure out when you'd want to use one.

What purpose did it serve other than spacing? Could it hold the nut in place (magnetic and all) while you spun the bolt down through it?
