Tow mirrors

Apologies in advance as I know the info is here somewhere just can't seem to find it.

Have a 2018 Tundra 1794 with the heated, blinker, power folding, BSM mirrors and need either a good addon mirror for towing or a replacement that keeps all the functionality of the factory mirrors. Amazon is a hot mess of "maybe it'll fit" and questionable reviews so looking for any decent options from those of you that have done this.

Finally took the plunge and bought a 2023 Rockwood Geo Pro 20BHS today so have to figure this out before I take delivery the end of the month.

I did find these on Amazon and I'm ok with losing the power folding function (barely use it anyway) but would like to keep the other functions.

The fancy people seem to like the boost auto mirrors: https://boostautoparts.com/products/tundra-mirrors. They can be optioned to keep all of your factory functions but they get quite spendy.

Side note on the geopro. Geopros are only 7'-4" wide so with your stock mirrors you are actually wider than that trailer. Stock mirrors are 8' tip to tip. You probably won't be able to see directly behind the trailer but you will be able to see down the side of it. Might be worth one trip just to see what you think without towing mirrors. I towed my parent's trailer that is 8' wide without tow mirrors and my experience was this, I could see almost down the edge of the trailer but I could see plenty enough to be comfortable making lane changes. I had absolutely zero visibility directly behind myself which meant I could merge in front of a semi and totally lose sight of it which was freaky to me (again your trailer is narrower, you will be able to see more than I could but I don't know how much). Finally, backing up in a perfectly straight line is almost impossible with an 8' wide trailer because I could not see the edge of the trailer without turning, which defeats backing in a straight line (you should be able to see both sides of the geopro). From my brief experience, I would personally rock the stock mirrors with a narrower trailer and I would want tow mirrors if I towed my parent's trailer again. That's my 0.02¢

 

Beat me to it. Yep, my trailer is 2" wider not including the awning and I bought the Fit System 81300 clip on for mine. Hardly use them since the stock mirrors do fine. I did get a rear view camera and that's well worth the money.

Boost auto is the only place you’ll get ALMOST everything you currently have for features in a tow mirror.

The only thing they don’t have is the EC/auto-dimming glass and the puddle lights (though you could make the reverse lights in then work as back-facing puddle lights).

I love mine - even better than the factory tow mirrors I had on my 2008.

If you go that route and want to make the reverse lights be your puddle lights, I can help you with the wiring changes needed to them to with with your factory wiring.

 

I think I'll give it a shot with the factory mirrors ... guess I didn't realize how wide these trucks are . I did order the rear view camera as well for the trailer so that combo may be fine.

I towed for a year with the stock mirrors before swapping out for Boost Auto mirrors. The stock ones are acceptable. I just wanted a bit more.

 

You can find Boost Auto style ones on eBay or Amazon for cheaper but the ads don't do a good job describing which features they do or don't have and which years they actually fit. I bit the bullet and ordered from Boost. I love them, even when I'm not towing.

Ended up just picking up the Boost Auto mirrors to be done with it. Wasn't cheap but with all the other money spent on the trailer and related stuff they weren't much

 

You won't be disappointed. I messed around with the "factory" style, huge blind spots. Then ebay GM style. Wouldn't move without popping a fuse. Finally bit the bullet and bought the Boost. Have never looked back!

 

I have the Boost Auto mirrors. I may swap them back for the OEM ones during winter while I don’t really tow. I’m having a hard time getting used to them and I get lots of vibration in the mirror glass.

 

Weird. I wouldn't say mine vibrate any more than my stock ones, though I don't stare at them for long periods of time while driving on the highway.

 

Thats exactly what i need, just can't see what behind me. Have a camera but didn't get the monitor with it, will have too try to get it working with my Phoenix head unit.

 

I'd be reaching out to them. I have to say I don't have vibration at all. For the $, they should make that right.

 

I sure wish they made these for 2022's. Not getting factory tow mirrors is a bummer.

 

New member here and thought I'd jump in on this as I myself pull a camping trailer and just picked up a 2020 1794 edition for myself....and was thinking about getting some tow mirrors. Every time I do a search these are the ones that keep showing up that appear to have all the options to match what I have on the truck.

Anybody have any experience with these at all? Good\bad\ugly?? Yeah they are kinda pricey (cheaper than the Boost) but one time purchase hopefully...

 

I thought I read on here that those are the ones that have vibration at highway speeds or aren't actually plug and play or something. Try to search the forum but I would consider spending a few bucks more for Boost Auto mirrors.

 

Thanks for your response. I had seen some reviews about the vibration and such. With the cost of these things, I was probably going to follow the advice of another post and pull the trailer first before I dropped that kind of cash into mirrors...I might find that I don't really need them.

 

How wide is your trailer? I think mine is 7'6" and I went the El Cheapo slip on type. I find myself forgetting they are even on there. They do give a few degrees more view behind but are no substitute for a camera. If I found out they knocked the MPG down a tenth I'd probably leave them off.
As far as vibration goes, wedge some closed cell foam under the glass. That cured it for mine.

 

32' long and 8' wide...so I'm thinking mirrors will be a good idea just to give more viewing area. Trailer is prewired for a rear camera but haven't really considered that...might be a good idea.

 

Yes, 8' would need mirrors. Here's the camera I got last year. Cheaper too. Don't know if they still have the same deal but in the instructions they offer a free gift if you email them. I did and got a spare camera. The catch is they want you to leave a review. Since I was happy with the setup I left a positive review.
I had to bend their camera bracket to fit on my camper but all in all very satisfied.

Pretty decent looking setup. Not completely sure I'd want to mount another screen on the dash for the few (5-7 times a year) that I tow...might could just set it up there with some sort of ballast I guess.

They are pretty good with the exception of the small lower mirrors, they are only adjustable left to right, no up and down adjustment. I can't quite get them to where I want them to be.

 

So those appear to be the same frame of the more expensive ones that I am looking at. How are they with wind\vibration?

 

It comes with a suction mount that works well

 

If looking at those, I would just buy the OEM Toyota ones, which a lot of guys say are not as good as the GM-style ones if you actually tow.

 

They have been excellent really, apart from the minor annoyance with the small lower mirror.

 

I like that these looked like the OEM ones, those GM ones seem huge. These have been good for towing our travel trailer.

 

I had these when I bought my truck. I found the blind spot to be scary, I was always missing vehicles on the passenger side. Aesthetically I prefer the non-tow factory mirrors. Even those style tow mirrors look better than the GM style. But for towing and safety, you couldn't pry the Boost (GM) mirrors out of my hands.

 

Hmmm, may have to upgrade to some boost auto mirrors.. Is the lower mirror on those adjustable up and down as well as left to right?
