Any proven way to keep cats out of the yard? Just had a big vet bill today. One of my Jack Russell's was fighting with a cat in the yard a few days ago. He has been limping and then his leg started swelling. Took him in today and he had an abcess and infection from the cat biting him. The stupid cat crawled into the wheel well of my cargo trailer and the dog grabbed it by its a$$ and pulled it out...that's probably when it happened.

    Sorry about your pup :(

Couple of Malinois or some nice coon hounds would do the trick!!!

Seriously though, if you contact your local animal control/shelter and request a live trap, they should bring one out to you and help you set it up. Once the cat is caught you just call them to come pick it up.

Another option is if you have any guys around you that run dogs for bear, mountain lion, etc.... Hit 'em up, as they usually have traps for training or will bring their pups over to cure the problem.

Personally, I'd lean toward socializing my dog with cats and teaching him to let them be if possible. I like cats killing mice around my property, though.

That'll just invite more mouths to feed that will eventually wander into the yard. I don't know about keep them out....usually a dog is enough to keep them away. Not in this case I guess.

Some cats are stupid. He got away and jumped on top of the fence. Then he jumped back into the yard with the dog.

There's also spraying vinegar around the areas they frequent. I don't think it will hurt them they do not like the smell.

Peppermint spray and pecan shells in the flower beds. They hate the smell of peppermint, and the pecan shells hurt their feet. A motion detecting sprinkler will also chase them away, and the Jack Russell will probably enjoy it.

When i was stationed on Louisianna I had a neighbor that would shoot what he considered pests on his property with an air rifle.

    Or buy a Rottweiler.

You know, little Johnny said he heard a cat stutter. His teacher said Johnny, cats can't talk, how in the work could he stutter?

He said the neighbor's cat jumped into the yard with his Rottweiler, the cat said "F" "F" "F" and before he could get the word "F#ck" out, my dog ate him!

Live trap and relocate if feral, take to animal control if neighbors. By law around here you must have control of your pets on your own property. Cat is no different than dogs in that regard.

Here the coyotes are being coyotes. Cats in the yard is not much of an issue.

    Teach your dog kung fu?

Sorry about you pup. I’ve found that cats spook easy. Go out and hiss at them. Maybe throw a rock in their direction and they will learn to steer clear.

Bit of a long shot, but if you have a zoo nearby go grab yourself a bag of tiger shit and spread it on the perimeter of your yard. It won't kill anything and cat's won't go anywhere near somewhere they think they'll run into a larger sized asshole version of themselves.

That I couldn't tell you, back in the UK we had a large zoo in our local town and they used to sell feed bag size sacks of the stuff specifically for keeping cats out of the yard.

And unlike cat shit, it's no worse than handling horse shit.

My chickens attack the shit out of a couple neighborhood cats that dare venture into the yard during daylight hours and drive them off. Your dog would probably have a field day with the chickens though..
