So i had the dealership perform the last oil change because they sent me a coupon, well they tightened the oil filter so tight that a 2 ft breaker bar wouldn't work. I reluctantly used an impact wrench which worked but must have cracked it without realizing it. I went on and changed the oil and started driving it when i noticed it was losing oil pressure. I pulled over to inspect and discovered the leak. I replaced the cap and refilled the oil and drove back to my shop where i flushed the engine and discovered the carnage.

There were quite a lot of aluminum flakes with the initial flush. I didn't have any warning lights until awhile after flushing i got a check engine light with camshaft code below. I also have a slight tapping sound from the engine.

Really not sure if I just killed my Tundra or not. Is it time for a new truck?

This does not sound good. Might be time for a new built motor from prospeed and supercharger.

When you re-filled the oil, how much oil did it take to top it off?

And this is why I don’t trust the dealer to do shit. Sry for your troubles and I hope everything works out for you. How many miles do you have on it? Still under the power train warranty?

Thanks. It just hit 95k. No warranty. I should have checked for leaks after changing oil but was in a hurry and just drove it...

I would pull the head that the code references and hopefully it's just a fucked up valvetrain part that you can replace and bolt the head down and be good to go. Majorly sucks but I think there's a lot more hope than most in this scenario since you have a pointer to the issue.

    100%. No. Nope. Not never.

Unless you personally know the guy doing the actual work, you have to assume that your oil change has fallen to the mechanic equivalent of a fry cook.

This is not looking good. Please let us know what you find.

Might not be the right time and place, but thank you for letting me know how lucky I am to have a mechanic I would trust with life.

Hopefully this isn’t the end of the motor, the amount of metal shavings is troublesome.

I agree, but at the first sign that the filter housing would not give, I would have taken it straight back to them and made them assume the risk of breaking it while attempting to remove it. I doubt the OP has any recourse now.

If you still have filter, cut it open and scrape all the metal out, then weigh it, just for curiosity sake.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably run a thicker oil, clear the code, and roll with it till she blows. You could get 10 miles down the road, or 100k, who knows. It's a toyota, so the odds are in your favor.

You could always get a salvage engine for around 5-6k.

Your OCV (Oil Control Valve) filter could be clogged as well and could *possibly* make it throw the 0012 code (not certain though) might wanna take a look at that

Wow, sorry to see that. Now I'm worried if they make them out of plastic for the 2022 Tundras or if an aluminum or magnesium cap housing is available aftermarket. I don't have my truck yet to check and didn't see one available.

This thread unfortunately thoroughly explains your username to me OP. :hattip: Hoping you can find a replacement motor for it because the new truck market is still ridiculous, at least around my town it still is.

While I agree a metal cap would be great to begin with, the plastic cap actually works, if its not over tightened. Every story I have seen about issues with the plastic cap have been dealer serviced. Luckily mine has never been changed by anyone but myself and I've never had an issue.

What is up with the Toyota tech’s over tightening the filter cover?

Since I’ve been on this forum, I’ve read about this time after time.

I had plans of Toyota doing the maintenance on my truck when I bought it but after reading on this forum, it hasn’t been to a dealer since new.

I don’t understand how someone with any mechanical ability can look at that brand new beefy filter housing O-ring that comes with every new filter and decide they need to tighten it with all of their strength. They’re probably forgetting to lubricate the o-ring with a little oil as well which only makes it harder to remove.

Totally agree. Just take a few seconds to look at the thing, and maybe even read the instructions that come with the new filter.

Low-skill techs are capable of messing it up in multiple ways. I earned a free oil change by sending my old Suburban to a local shop for some big wiring harness repairs. I ended up cashing in on the free oil change later on my 4Runner, which has the same kind of cartridge filter as the Tundra. I love this shop and trust the owner, but the new oil change guy could’ve killed my engine the same way as the OP’s.

Long story short, the guy didn’t put the large O-ring in the right place…he pushed it past the channel it’s supposed to go in so that it acted like a gasket between the filter housing and the engine block. He torqued the filter housing into the engine block so hard that it actually worked for two weeks like that. I had no idea anything was wrong until I came out to my 4Runner with a giant puddle of oil underneath the front end. The first cold snap of Fall was the night before, and the O-ring shrunk enough to let out a quart or two in the driveway. I am so glad I walked around the front of the 4runner to move one of my kids’ toys they left in the driveway. I might not have seen the puddle otherwise.

I took my skid plate off and removed the filter, filmed the whole thing, changed the oil in the driveway, and then drove to the shop and showed the owner what I discovered. He thanked me profusely, made his new tech watch my videos of the problem, and said I saved him from having to buy me a new engine. He’s an honest guy, and I appreciated that. But I’ve refused free oil changes from anyone ever since.

I had to use a breaker bar to get my filter off too after being dealer serviced.

I forget what the torque spec is, but it’s not alot. But with the breaker bar, it felt similar to the mower blades on my commercial mower which are torqued to 85 ft/lbs.
