    Here’s another:
If I give you one penny today and then double that tomorow and give you 2 cents then double it again the next day and give you 4 cents and so on for 30 days. Guesstimates on what the day 30 payment would be??

I do agree with your logic here that this makes sense. However, this is why inflation happens, the source of the fund is relevant. There is a value associated with that source of funds, otherwise just continuously printing money without regard to the value of that money would be a successful way to restore that money but it’s not and that what gives you inflation obviously.

Depends on the state and if there’s a “grocery tax”. But if he bought $70 worth of KitKats :anonymous:, I believe he would have been taxed.

I’m gonna say the store lost nothing because they probably would have noticed the $130 missing when they counted the drawer after shift change and docked the cashier.

$10,737,418.24 if you consider 30 days. Half that for 29.

You're probably correct since it was 2 x 29th power. I was doubly wrong.

    Day 1: 2^0 = 1 penny
    Day 2: 2^1 = 2 pennies
    Day 3: 2^2 = 4 pennies
    ...
    Day n: 2^(n-1) pennies

    So, day 30's payout = 2^29 = 536,870,912 pennies = $5,368,709.12

    I know it's a lot.

My kids were telling me about this one from their match or economics teacher.

Total payout over 30 days is the Sum of 2^(n-1) where n:1-30 = $10,737,418.23

...which strangely enough is one penny less than 2^30...how does this work?

    Well,
    2^0 = 1.
    2^1 = 2.
    2^2 =4

Add those up, and you get one less than 2^3. (8-1=7) :eek2:

    Add up 2^0, 2^1, 2^2, 2^3, 2^4, 2^5. 1+2+4+8+16+32=63. That's one less than 2^6=64.

    2^30 = (the sum, from n=0 to 29, of all 2^n's) + 1 = $10,737,418.24. :eek::eek2::eek:

    In general terms, 2^(n+1) = (the sum, from 0 to n, of all 2^n's) + 1

So, if you were asked if you'd like to be paid every day of the month with this pattern, or the day at the end of the month, choose the day at the end of the month. You'll make one penny better than all previous days combined. :transformer:

    Ha.

They asked the kids class if they would rather have a lump payout of $10k or the compounded penny. Most all of the kids choose the lump sum of $10k....my kids knew better, they choose the penny.

Yeah, at the end of the day, the store has its $100 bill back, but lost $70 of merch and $30 of change in the process.
