HELP!!, talk me off the ledge...

My dealership called me and told me my cement crewmax PRO is 3 weeks out!!! MSRP is 49,181.00 and I'll get it for $49,181.00. Meanwhile, my brother-in-law calls me and tells me he is selling his 2017 Ford F150 platinum, 3.5 ecoboost, 7k miles and will let me have it for trade-in value. Thing is lifted and loaded and with all the Ford innovation I am having a hard time choosing the PRO over the F150. I can't help but keep thinking that if I go with the PRO I am basically just going to have my 2007 TRD Off Road with fancier shocks, dual exhaust, and navigation... oh and an additional 35K in debt (selling my 2007 for $20K and putting that down on the new truck). Am I crazy thinking the Ford is going to be a better option for me? I am a die hard Toyota guy, but just kind of getting tired of Toyota resting on it's laurels with the Tundra.

 

Hard decision if money is an object of your decision making process.

If it's not then wait the 3 weeks

 

They should be around the same cost so it really is just a matter of options. Ford just has so much more innovation, but that Toyota quality and reliability...

 

Toyota for the reliability ,quality and resale value.

 

What it always comes down to for me is how long I plan on keeping the truck. If I plan on driving it for 10+ years, accumulating 250,000+ Miles (I do a lot of driving), then I always go with the most reliable one. However if you plan on just keeping it long enough to pay off (4-5 Years, less than 150K Miles), then the 'Fancier' (less reliable) one might be the better option. Also consider that the new Tundra is going to decrease in value much more slowly than the Ford. So if you plan on trading the truck in, once the 5 Years has past. I would nearly bet Big money that the TRD pro will hold its value better that the described F150.

Also I am going to assume money is a factor because when is it not... I guess if I was born rich.

 

Then Toyota is the way to go. I've had Fords and i'll never buy another. Just my opinion. With "innovation" comes unforeseen troubles.

 

Go with reliability and resale value plus you can always put in time to do modifications to make it that much nicer and for me modification is like therapy just love doing it

 

That's easy! Ford drivetrain doesn't compare to Toyota drivetrain!

Depends on the cost of the F150. But I'd probably go with the Ford since it's probably going to be half the price of the Pro. Drive it til the warranty runs out and then trade it in for a 4th Gen Tundra.

 

Seat of the pants test. Which ever makes you say "this is the sh@t" buy it. Owned f150 new, tundra new, and this last time tundra over current f150 no question. Was not impressed with ecoboost.....

 

He is real well off (business owner) and buys a new truck every rear. To him money is no option, but not to me. I do intend on driving this truck for the next 10 years (like my '07). I know the Tundra is going to be worth more in 2027 and probably wont be in the shop once, whereas the Ford... who knows?

 

Down the road, your Pro is always going to be worth more than a F-150.

HaHa I dont even know why this is such a hard decision for a toyota fan boy like me. Has anyone owned a newer ford w/ecoboost and can speak to the common issues too expect with it?

 

Plus the 2017 pro will not be in production next year so the value will be much higher

 

I can always count on @ColoradoTJ for some straight up legitimate advice, thanks man. I know that Ford has come a long ways as far as quality, nothing close to Toyota though. I have heard glowing reports of the ecoboost while others are down on it (especially while towing). I guess I just got stars in my eyes when going through the list of options/tech that Platinum has. It is black in color, which I absolutely hate (especially living in Hot Utah summers).

 

IF YOU GET A FORD YOU WILL BE SENT TO THE PHANTOM ZONE AND BE BANISHED FROM HERE...FOREVER!!!

 

If you are gonna keep the truck for a long time, go with Tundra.
If you plan on changing it after a few years then go with Ford. Your brother in law probably loosing a lot of money on 17 Ford w 6k. Dealer normally pays wholesale value or less on trade ins. Now that I think he is actually not loosing any $$$ due to tax deductions and deperciation available for business owners. One of the perks for being in business.

 

Ford has less room and I beleive less towing. If these are important then you have some thinking. I like more play money at hand and it sounds like you are getting an incredible deal on the ford. A new truck is big payments.

 

I have no intelligent reply other than this: everytime I get in my Tundra ,my cool factor triples, My boys enlarge to pumpkin size, and I get at least 100 more hp! And my Tundra dunks all over my BIL'S F-150...Just saying' TuuuunDraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

From what your telling us you plan on owning the vehicle a long time. Make no mistake, the Tundra will be the best choice. The lifted Ford and its Platinum options scream major headache down the road. I own the new Pro and it rides extremely well, much better than your 2007. I just came out of a heavily optioned Ram Laramie that had a laundry list of recalls. That Ram was hands down better optioned but to be honest every time I drove it I was a bit nervous about it breaking down. Put the lift on the Ford with that small Eco Boost and something will eventually give.

 

Decision is simple for me if I was in your situation, I would choose the Tundra PRO simply because of the anticipation of keeping it for 10+ years. From an engineers perspective reliability and quality is worth every penny no matter how you look at it. (this is my unbiased opinion)

Now for my bias opinion.... Your comparing Ford vs Toyota.... Your trying to compare apples to oranges brother man..... Apples to oranges.... They both have their place in this world yes but Ford sucks. (Ford has left me stranded... I had a well maintained 91 t-bird parents bought it for me) so my honest opinion you'd be NUTS to go ford. I've had a Toyota for the last 11 years and it would have to be a hella good deal for me to even consider test driving anything else.

 

Buy the Ford at the dealer price sell both the 07 and Ford at KBB street cost and put that money down on a new Tundra.
