Well been trying to lose weight, picked up that new hobby of golf, but lately I e been doing a lot of walking and shuffle jogging and also back on the old Marine Corps Daily 7, but almost two weeks ago I it felt like a bad sprain, and it feels like my left knee wants to buckle backwards when walking, squatting down on the toilet hurts, laying on the bed and bringing my knee in hurts, so I took it easy at work trying to be careful walking in the track, climbing up the ladder steps on my machine hurts, so just taking either Advil or Tylenol, wrapping up knee, so now on these off days I started walking easy ands started my calisthenics, I heard the dreaded "pop" in left knee, but my knee is not swollen, anyone had this happen? I've been reading online, seems like it's possible I may have tore my ACL, IDK until I get an MRI done, have a Dr appointment tomorrow, just want a shot to get me through the week, any info greatly appreciated

I have a torn Acl , lateral meniscus , medial meniscus. Was loose and i would hyperextend it with a lot of pain. Been hvaing issues for a year. First 3 docs and MRI said no ACL. Went back 6 months later and was told complete ACL and its an old injury. No surgery due to arthritis. Eventually itll be total knee. If it is ACL, get it fixed before you due to much damage. They can trim up and clean meniscus really easily. Had that done on the other knee with almost zero setback.

    Get it looked at NOW....

Wife has had knee issues since her coaching/playing days ; three different repair surgeries and just had knee replacement surgery in July..

I CAN NOT stress it enough to seeing a Doctor and give them ALL the details....

We waited for Con's and that surgery was the 2nd this year... Her hip was replaced in January and that was caused due to the knee being "junk"..

Now we are in our early 60's BUT we did wait too long/worked through the pain...

That is why when I hurt my back, it was straight to a doctor; PT ,then "shots" twice before the "knife" BUT I am back enough to pass my DOT physical ...

LISTEN to your body... I want to drive my kids crazy till in my 100's

Def agree with everyone else get it looked at asap….for me …approx 2 years post meniscus surgery…16 stitches to repair a bucket handle tear from a lot of old basketball injuries but simply taking a knee to photo my son & boom ….blown out knee !
My doc had done a lot of meniscus repairs and I hold his record for most stitches …. Gave me a whole new appreciation for mobility

I'm going through the same thing right now. Unfortunately it's not my ACL (or maybe I should say fortunately). I have done 4 weeks of PT and it made it worse. It could be your IT band or the hamstring ligaments (3)/muscles going into self protect mode due to being out of shape.

Like you, I'm calling my doc tomorrow and getting some imaging done on my leg.

I’ve had two knee surgeries and will prob need knee replacement in 10 years or less. The first one was just inflammation. It healed maybe 80% and won’t get better.
The second one, opposite knee- inflammation and then they found a torn ACL. It’s prob 90% from what it was.
My knees still crack like a Rice Kripsies. Certain angles make them shake like Shakira.

I did plenty of PT beforehand. Don’t waste your time. Cortisone shot is worthless on it to as it’s a band-aid and thins your ligaments.
Get an MRI. You may have to fight for it, but worth to see what’s really going on. On my second one, doc didn’t fight me and scheduled the MRI to not play their games.

PT just isn’t worth it. It only makes it worse, IMO. Not only with my knees, but shoulders. Waste of so much time and useless exercises that made it worse as it aggravated it

You would think I would know that after one shoulder, two knee, one elbow, one wrist, and a foot surgery.

U have to keep fighting the doctors. So stupid. I’m very fortunate insurance pays for all of it, including MRI (well, $10 co-pay lol) but they want to fight on all aspects of it. Why? Just go to MRI and let it show what they can’t see and save both of us time

I’ve had three knee surgeries. First I halfway tore my acl my junior year of HS. I asked if I could still run track with the half tear. Very reputable sports doc told me yes and did a scope to repair my meniscus and clean up the torn tissue. Tore it the rest of the way a couple years later playing slow pitch softball and had a full reconstruction which used my patellar tendon. Recovery was about 6 months. A couple years later I tore my other acl, mcl, and meniscus. Had a full reconstruction using a cadaver acl and recovery was 4 months. Both seem stable and they were 13 plus years ago and I’m in law enforcement now and have been good. The older you get I feel it’s better to get the surgery sooner. I had specific reasons not to in high school and don’t regret holding off. Best of luck with you situation. I’m sure medical technology has changed and may be better than when I last went through it. If not, the cadaver acl was a much easier and faster recovery.

It really depends on your age and limitations and how bad its damaged. If you need replacement, my opinion is cadaver is the way to go. Otherwise they pull it from your hammy…more invasive and now two things to recover from. Younger kids do better with that. A lot of times if it hasnt hampered you or limited your activities , no surgery is a viable course. If you ski and play basketball you might wanna consider it.

I do have a lot of opinions on rehab. Ive been through a ton. There is a lot crappy PT’s doing the same old exercises. A lot of issues an injuries are due to muscle imbalances. If you dont know what those are, you arent going to fix your problems.
I threw out my PTs exercises for my knee and started doing a lot of backwards walking, sleds , reverse lunges , shin raises (opposite of calf raise) and im a lot better. Pain and swelling has subsided inless i really piss it off that day. The book
“Rebuilding Milo” is a great resource for injuries imbalances and how to fix them. When the knee started feeling better i noticed a lot of restriction in my ankles and hip mobility with a loss of strength in my injured leg. Working on that has helped but its been a long process all around. I hate to say it but Google and Youtube has been my friend for finding shit that works.

Had similar symptoms a few years ago. My knee buckled on me getting into my truck once, too. Doc was sure it was a torn meniscus, but MRI was clean.

Long story short, it was my posture. Just standing/walking I'd be slightly toe out and when I drove I'd rest my heel while letting my foot loll over to the gas pedal. Apparently there's a band that runs down the outside of the thigh and it'll tighten up with poor posture and can pull the patella out of alignment.

Had a massage therapist do a trigger point massage on my "I-T band" to loosen it up. Then very conscious effort to keep my toes pointed straight forward and no lazy foot lolling when driving. Been great for years since.

I'll bet its meniscus not ACL. Very common injury for guys like us past our prime.

I got something funky going on with mine right now too. I lift heavy 5 days week and did something to it doing power clean squats. I'll keep going till it interrupts my routine.

IT Bands suck ass. If I run anything over a few miles, usually mine hurts so bad that I can't walk for the rest of the day. I'm glad posture fixed yours, mine's likely because I'm too quad dominate when I squat and it's compensating for my hip alignment. All I can do is band exercises, compression, and rolling it out.

the very first thing you should do is consult a doctor. Ask your primary physician to refer you to an ortho MD or ortho surgeon then go from there. I absolutely recommend PT pre and post surgery.

I have been in the sports medicine business for almost 25 years……..and I will say finding a good PT is a lot like finding a good mechanic. You need to find someone who takes the time to listen to your needs, take a proper inventory of the goals, have the expertise and skill set and follow through. Problem is a lot are “by the book” meaning you go in for knee pain and they do the exact same thing for the entire patient population. Remember they are compensated the same way mechanics are - billed units equal payments. The more units they can give (either in a given appointment or over the course of the injury) the more they / the clinic make. That’s why many insurance companies have capped the number of visits per injury…….

all that said, there are dozens of factors that go into surgery vs no surgery, conservative vs aggressive treatment options, inject or not to inject, mri now vs later, etc.

I won’t get into specifics but if anyone has any questions I am happy to help off line. There is a lot of misinformation in here and anecdotal experience in the thread that isn’t necessarily relevant to all. I respect everyone’s individual circumstances and experiences but blankety saying PT is not beneficial isn’t accurate at all. In fact good luck going on for acl reconstruction without doing therapy on the front end to maximize tangoed of motion and strength prior to going under the knife. If people do that the recovery is a bitch and the results are poor at best.

Again, happy to help anyone who wishes.

I can only speak on my wife's behalf on replacements :eek:o_O.. We were DAM lucky to find a Surgeon that specialized and Dam he was blunt... and he advised PT in between surgeries to strengthen her leg pre-op...besides the hip rehab

My surgeon was straight forward and told me if I followed instruction LIFE would get back to almost normal, if not my 2nd surgery would be he!! :eek2:

As @shawn474 mentioned, finding a good PT group helps and we again were spoiled... the same crew that put up with and got me back to enjoying LIFE created "Space" for Con's Re-hab's :curls:.....Again, if you set "Goals" they can work with you to get it done BUT you have to work/want it...

Good luck with all of it !! Listen to your body and as far as insurance, :annoyed: I get put straight thru to a Supervisor now... Con's deductibles were met 1st surgery but convenient typo's create headaches for the 2nd ...

yeah the arthrogram injections are not fun - but shouldn’t often be done in the knee. Typically reserve that for hip and shoulder stuff. An experienced orthopedic should be able to tell you prior to the mri. Biggest misconception is a “partially torn acl” doesn’t need surgery. In my business, a partially torn acl is like being almost pregnant. It is or it isn’t…..and not much in between. However, if it were me at my age and activity level, I may not opt for surgery right away unless it was unstable. Then the choice is what type of graft to get - pros and cons to each. And recovery much different comparatively

Just happened to me a month ago. Mine occurred during a pretty extreme twisting impact event. Popping sound, instant instability, surprisingly little visible swelling, massive loss in range of motion at first.

As long as there are no broken bones, all my "knee-search" basically yielded the same initial treatment path regardless of the ligament/cartilage injury - RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for 6-8 weeks + PT for range of motion/strengthening/muscle balance.

Sounds like you got in touch with a local Ortho expert already so that's the first real step. Mine didn't tell me anything based on the physical relative motion tests since it was internally swollen. I got an MRI within a week of the event because I'm the type that just needs to know. No dye injections, just my legs in the chamber, loud but easy. Results were completely torn ACL, partially torn MCL, medial meniscus tear, and lots of bone bruising. I was prescribed PT until I regain full range of motion and no more internal fluid and swelling. Then discuss if I want to go the surgery path although it's getting more livable every day.

Apparently you can live without ACL's completely and just need to wear braces for chopping/cutting motions, sports, etc. I'm leaning towards ACL repair to try and slow down progressive damage on other knee parts though. All my friends with previous ACL tears say get the surgery now and slowly build knee strength for a better than new recovery rather that waiting for other issues to crop up.

Yes I do agree with this. Find someone who is educated on the process. The anger is prevalent in my post and should not be a blanket statement. Ive worked with an exceptional therapist in the past. But they left my insurance / practice. That being said its hard to find them. Sounds like you are one of the good ones!

One of the top rated ortho’s for ACL surgery in our area has a strict pre/op post op routine with a specific therapist for his surgeries. Three co-workers have all had great experiences with that group.

    Op,

Do your research! Good luck! Hope its a minor injury!
