Floor Jack and Lighting

Hello. I am one of those weird people who likes to carry a floor jack in his truck, primarily for tire changes. I have a 3 ton "Daytona" from Harbor freight which is great in my garage but it is a little heavier (OK, a lot heavier) than I would like for mobile use. I have 3 other floor jacks (US General, Harbor Freight, 1.5 to 2 ton) that are aluminum frame and a hell of a lot easier to lift. Should the aluminum frame jacks be up to tire changes on my 2004 Double Cab 2WD? Do you have better choices?

I also would like better headlights (brighter). Any ideas there?

I use a 1.5 ton harbor freight special with a skid plate like this mounted on it. For occasional use it's fine. I have a 3 ton in the garage for serious use.

I'm interested in seeing any photos of how people have them mounted in their beds, specifically the 1.5 size models without a bed cage.

I have a HF 1.5T and build a skid plate. So far I have the handle mounted with quick fist clamps off the bed rails (actually half-strut) and looking to mount the jack over the pass fender well.

 

For those that don’t want to carry a big heavy jack around, is there a bigger factory option style scissor lift jack? I once had a flat tire on the side of the road, got my OEM spare tire off, jacked up the truck with the OEM jack, it didn’t reach! I was lucky someone pulled over and offered his floor jack.

 

I'm going to be adding a jack that will work with this setup I have now. Not a fan of hauling a huge jack around so instead I'll be doing a bottle jack.

I looked into safe jacks alot and other options they are pretty good. I came up with an alternative I’m trying out which is 6x6 post offset bases bolted together with the OEM jack on top, similar to other peoples use of a block of wood but lighter. Using 5 right now and it weighs just 2 extra lbs and fits under the seat next to the stock jack.

 

I keep a 2-ton floor jack (AC Delco) in my bed mounted tool box.

 

I have a 2 ton offroad jack and 6 ton bottle jack with numerous blocks of wood. I also carry a pair of jack stands and wheel chocks.

 

I just had a flat on the highway. I patched it and re-inflated it on the side of the road. Barely a 10-min job, and most of that time was spent waiting on my compressor to do its job. I did not need to jack up the truck and swap tires.

You’ll still need to swap tires if you tear the sidewall, but for simple tread punctures, the compressor and tire repair kit I carry weigh maybe 5-6lb and occupy a small space in my toolbox. Pics here.

Maybe a taller bottle jack and a solid plank of wood would work if you have a lifted truck that has rendered your factory jack too short.

 

I have a 12 ton bottle Jack from HF in my back seat. Works well when I’ve needed it.

 

Hello. I have still not resolved my problem regarding how to jack up my vehicles to change a tire when I am away from home. I have a 2004 Double Cab Tundra, a 2004 Access Cab Tundra Stepside (No ugly Tundra jokes, it has 100,000 miles on it and is in GREAT shape!), and a 2003 Sequoia. All are factory height and will remain that way. I prefer a floor jack but not any of the 100+ pound varieties.


I am wondering if the jack below will work for tire changes away from home. The 36 pounds of weight sounds cool! My other option is below. It was suggested by reywcms on this site

I bought the bottle jack version from Harbor Freight 12ton. Less space taken, lighter etc.

 

Also, FYI, my Stepside Tundra goes in for "Special Service Campaign 70B" service in about a month. Toyota is replacing my lower ball joints even though my Tundra has 100,000 miles on it. Cool! Wonder what else they will say needs replacing?

 

Like the setup. Yes on bottle jack. It can give you options in situations where you would prefer to jack up the axel instead of the truck.

I also have a compressor & tire repair kit, agreed, when possible that's the faster easier option!

 

I haven't used that one, but I have the cheaper HF 1.5T jack mounted in my bed with a custom riser and skid plate. I've used it to lift 1 corner at a time without issue, but I wouldn't use it for anything past tire changes.

 

You'd be able to jack up the rear, 1 side, from under the axle fosho. Not sure if it'd reach the frame to lift the front. One option would be the less expensive, $99, 1.5T Pittsburg racing jack from HF fitted with a jack pad and extension from Pro Eagle. Your end price would be roughly the same and you'd have a good solution. The Pittsburg jack is 3 lbs lighter too. I'm not 100% sure the requisite jack pad from PE works on the HF jack but it did work on one of my Arcan jacks.

 

Thanks Rey! Looks neat! Do you have the bottle jack laying down when not is use? Does it leak any fluid that way?

 

A bottle jack with the bleed screw closed snug will not be leaking regardless of the orientation in storage unless there's a major problem with the jack or seals.

 

I have that on my HF jack, works great. I lift the front on the TRD PRO skidplate middle jacking point.

Fwiw guys, pawn shops often have some decent equipment up for grabs. Don't be fooled, negotiate the pricing too!

 

What have had luck finding at pawn shops if you dont mind me asking?

 

Guns, scopes, instruments and amps, tools, machinery, fishing gear, camping equipment, rims, etc. Lots of stuff, about 60% under retail in most cases. If it isn't a decent deal, I don't buy it. The idea is, if I need the money back, I can sell it without much, if any loss.

 

Harbor Freight has the off road jack available, just ordered one.

 

Wow, product weight of 70lbs, seems unrealistic for day to day usage for weight/size. Obviously would like one if I changed a flat, same with a full sized air compressor and air tools too haha.
